Rise and Shine world, Mike Dreams is Just waking up. He is one of the hardest working artists in the twin cities and his passion for music shines through in every song. I have had the chance to watch Mike develop over the last 3-4 years and he continues to improve with every project. I will admit, up until now, I have never consider a Mike Dreams album worthy of more than a couple listens through, but there is no doubt "Just waking up" will be incorporated into my daily playlist. The album is very easy to listen to the first time through with catchy hooks and pop melodies scattered throughout the 18 tracks. Mike has shown that he is not afraid to make radio friendly songs, and at the same time maintain a lyricism that would have even the most disciplined hip hop purists hitting the rewind button. It seems this balance between two different worlds continues with Mike's faith in Jesus Christ, which is something he is not afraid to acknowledge, up against the rappers aspirations to break into an industry filled with sex, fame, and money. (See 3rd verse of "No MOre Trouble") The featured singers on "Just Waking Up" are impressive talents and at times almost steal the show. If there is a place where Mike falls short, it is that as a young artist still getting better, Dreams seems to lack a distinguished voice and style of his own,and at times, a monotonous delivery leaves the listener anticipating the hooks more than the verses. The production on "Just waking up" is impressive and follows closely behind the current industry formulas of popular artists such as eminem and B.O.B. On the flip side, Mike consistently brings an array of metaphors, punch-lines, along side lyrical ability. Mike flex's his story telling muscles on tracks like "Got it locked down". Dreams does a nice job of switching up his flow and subject matter throughout the album but the emphasis on his dreams of success becomes a bit redundant on album #2. Mike Dreams' excellence as an artist continues to shine even amongst an already well established twin cities hip hop scene. I anticipate continued success for Mike Dreams, and hope to see his dreams become a reality.

Mike Dreams just has "it"
Listening to his music and punchline after punchline it just has me excited. I bumped the last album until it wouldn't play, now this one is the same. Keep of the good work Mike. |

I think "Haben10" was right on with a lot of his comments. Here's the thing with Mike Dreams: he is a dedicated and hard working aspiring artist, but simply does not have what it takes to make a big time splash on the hip-hop scene. It's true that he can spit, and he can rhyme, but he's lacking in two significant musical areas--his voice and his style.
Like Haben said, Dream's voice is WAY too monotonous and raw (in a bad way). Frankly, he's hard to listen to at points--and you'll also notice that his biggest songs yet-- ("This is my Jam" from a while back and the latest "So Long" from this mixtape) rely heavily on beat and hook/chorus. A lot of artists actually do this, and some are able to make it, but that's because they are marketable and have a.... STYLE. Mike Dreams (a.ka Michael Hannah, aka Young Son, aka I can't find a suitable stage name for myself) says he tries to "set a precedent" by sending a "positive" message through rap. First off, that's not at all a "precedent." TONS of artists have done the same thing, and some have been successful. However, they have been successful in small NICHE markets--and if Mike Dreams is going to "make it" anywhere, that's where it will be. To be brutally honest, there is simply no place in mainstream, commercial hip-hop (I'm talking about what Dream's aspires to and constantly raps about in literally every single one of his songs, so much so that it is tiring and repetitive) for an artist that wants to bring this message in the way he wants to present it. It's fine if you want to bring a positive message--in my opinion, the world and rap needs more of it--however, refusing to swear in a single song is not the way to do it. In life there is the good and the bad, and the best of artists are able to rap about and express both. With that said, when Dreams talks about bringing a "positive message to hip-hop" it just sounds artificial. And in addition, to make almost every single song about "proving labels wrong" or "blowing up someday" or "can't wait till I make it big" is boring. Be an artist for the sake of being an artist, not to get to point X. Despite all of this, I respect Mike Dreams the man a whole lot, considering his perseverance and passion. I just don't respect Mike Dreams the artist. And with this mixtape in place, I would not consider betting a dime on him as a record exec. He may find a niche market (for all of you looking for a positive "Christian" message while still staying hood. Right.) "The Booth" has followed him from the beginning and continues to give him praise, which at this point is plain consistency bias. The fact that Mike Dreams has taken precedent over other aspiring artists (Mac Miller is an example) is pure outrage and has this reputable site losing credibility in the eyes of many. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I am throughly impressed! Mike, ur last album was solid, but I could definitely detect major potential to build off of. After Waking Up to this album, I believe u really have jus been wokin up. I think the title and concept of the album meshed beautifully. This cd was laced with many soulful, inspiring and motivating beats, flows and choruses. I'm some ways, I feel like I have jus wokin up while listening to the album. This is an improved Mike Dreams, however there is still more room for improvement. Quality ish. One of my fav albums of the year... no question.

Gave this 5 stars for lyrical content... not wordplay or puns (which he had) but for inspiration. That's a big thing with me and it's so simple, but music nowadays seems to lack it. I liked every song but one. I'm VERY picky with music so that says a lot. Definitely worth the download.
