I'm sensing a resurrection of true hip hop. I'm hoping emcees like this put to death the horrendous excuse of rappers such as wakka.

Upon first listen I was surprised, the production by Needlz here is astounding, and this is certainly a collection of some raw talent coming together with a guy like Honors English laying down the rhymes. The only thing about Honors English is that I sometimes feel like I'm struggling to hear his message, I shouldn't have to strain my ear to hear a message from an emcee. Honors English has an interesting delivery, I certainly give him that, and I love the positivism in the music, tracks like "Crazay" are just astounding, and the replay value certainly has that classic feel to it. The problem lies in that the delivery is not always on point. I feel like you cannot call yourself the best emcee if listeners cannot hear you message. Now, Honors English might be creating a new lane of sound right here, and that very well could be the case. The production on here is incredible, with features from the likes of lyrical heavyweights like Lupe Fiasco and underground artists like The Mad Violinists. I'm liking the overall sound of it and it certainly has an incredible replay value to it, but once again I must point out that Honors English is no Nas, he is no Busta Rhymes or Jay-Z in his prime. His flow could be more fluid, but again I go on and click on a song like "Higher Rebel" where I once again get myself banging my head to an incredible sample, and some great lyricism. Honors English has left a legacy with this piece of music, I'm just not sure if his flow is going to be fluid enough to establish a lasting career. As always though, we can see what the Booth thinks.

Now I must admit, watching the online response to the recent release of SOTA only confirms the 5 star rating that I give this Work of Art. In all honesty, what is there to really critique here, (and I am all for constructive criticism) The beats are undeniable, and speak to hip hop heads, radio hit lovers, women (who will appreciate NOT being disrespected but rather praised and uplifted) and all to tracks you can nod ya head to without feeling turned off by a 'preachy' message. For this to be a Free Debut, it lets you know that Honors is confident that his bar buffet is unlimited, and makes me that more excited to hear what his next project will produce. State of the Art not only introduces a MC whose writing skills are damn near indisputable, but he showcases amazing singers writers and musicians as well (Sunni Patterson is my Favorite Poets, her Def Poetry appearance was DOPE) and Lupe offers a witty carefree verse fitting for his feature on Flying High. I can understand that some may not prefer his flow style, which will just come down to a matter of personal taste. For example, Kanye is not my favorite rapper flow wise, by far; but he mixes humor, wit and controversy with some of the best beats known to man, so he wins just about every time. I look forward to discovering the fan base that Honors English attracts and believe that if he is being compared to the likes of Jay and Nas (and not Drake, ASAP, Meek Mill or Wale) then he has already proven to be a strong contender. "I'm destined to be a legend, the more Credit I get, I mean, the more I'm in Collections" -HE

Man you don't even hear music like this in this genre anymore. Honors lyrics are crazy, the beats, the concepts, the whole presentation is classic sh!t. I don't hardly even listen to hip-hop no more. It used to be all I lived and breathed. Graff, raps, records, cyphers, just in the streets wit it. This reminds me of what could be done if people chose to actually produce something of value, rather than the cheapest product with the most pop to sell quick, drink, get high and just f@ck around. Classic work to the team, Honors English and everybody involved.

First things first..Melodically, musically, its in comparison to anything thats been done or currently composed and considered as "classic music". Needlz simply smashed this effort and put so much passion and hart into the debut. To me, its pain steakingly obvious he wanted this project to make an impression, and that he honestly believes in Honors as an artist. Second Chances is simply beautiful, and Honors simply merges his lyrics with the track masterfully. The vocals on the track by Karina Pasian complete the feel of story telling serenity. Not to mention the subject matter of the song in whole-it all goes together masterfully. The track is damn near flawless! Palin and Bachman, another incredible audio sample of what I like to call "vile wit the red-cap rap"! Unstoppable deserves 'Honorable Mention'! SOTA is critical. I can go on! Honors lyrically is 2nd to none! Now, granted, at times the fluency and cadence can be syntax and a bit hard to follow, or perhaps even what some produces have told me I am when in the booth (out of pocket). SOme may say it takes away from the feel of a song. To an exstent, I am in slight agreeance, but to know Honors music, is to know that this is his who he is. Look at the Almighty Pharoah Monche, Common, Ras Kas, Chino XL. Honestly, its ok, just allow yourself to be lost in poetry and the music paints the backdrop, thus you have SOTA! He does not disappoint at all! This, my hip-hop brethren, is what WE ALL NEED! Please support this brotha! We knock Drake, Wayne, Gucci, FLocka but wont promote Honors! Lets stop talking about whats not being done and whats not 'hip-hop' and be about a movement. Lets promote what we want on the radio's! We give people and intities power. Lets give Honors power! # Salute to Needlz and Honors for a movement project!

Lyrically this is the craziest collection of music I've ever heard. Honors English's word play and lines with multiple meaning are a form of lyricism hiphop has never seen before. I'm speechless. The beats are hot too, but the lyricism is what did for me. Every time I listen to a song I catch more multiple meanings. It's rediculous. I'm really not sure how somebody could think of all those word relationships and make it rhyme with a strong and rhythmical delivery like that. I don't know that I can be entertained by less cerebral rap anymore after listening to this.

Best album I've heard in years. Great rhymes & sounds all made even better due to fact that its all of substance, instead of the standard fare that we get with the major label pop crap BS [drink, drugs, get high, kill, and just f*ck around]. This is how you bring Hip-Hop back. This is how you build a base.

Dopee! Only album too I've been listening to on my ipod! Second chances was supperr relative, because my best friend got diagnosed with the same cancer, and my mom is working on getting her degree! Love how the lyrics actually make sense, and love the word play! I'm just getting into spoken word, and it's really helping. Spread the word! Great album!

Mixtape of the Year.
Hit me just as hard as J. Cole - "The Warm Up" . . . which was one of the best mixtapes ever in my opinion. I love everything about State of the Art. The production, thought-out lyricism, the videos... It feels like a pretty BIG deal when you listen to it. Honors English is injecting something NEW and NEEDED into Hip-Hop in my opinion. I want to see him win a grammy. This album is shooting directly into my top 5.. I can't wait to hear more Honors English. |
