Born and raised on the eastside of Detroit, rapper Tax Holloway changed the landscape of the regionally static artist. Just because you come from a specific city doesn’t mean your loyalties must remain within city limits. Destined to become a mainstream success story, Tax Holloway independently traveled south after mildly building a buzz in Motown. Seeing the success of artists whose area code was a notch below the Bible belt, Holloway decided to call Atlanta his new home.
Already flooded with talent from the likes of Ludacris, T.I. and Young Jeezy, the ATL sandbox was never to full to keep Tax Holloway out of the fun. His journey through the peach state began to blossom after impressing the CEO of the independent label, D-Boy Entertainment, Don “Little Big Man” Adams. Adams inked Holloway to a deal and vowed to get him signed by a major player in the industry.
Since then Tax Holloway has been on the perpetual grind. Sharing a studio with the likes of N.O. born Mannie Fresh, Holloway has been able to transcend the boundaries of his music, which once seemed impossible. On Get It Right he lays down his lyrical skills like silverware on a placemat. A matting of course that was pre-treated by Fresh whose skills have become more diverse since his independent parting from the Cash Money family.
During an interview with DJBooth.net’s DJ “Z,” Tax Holloway talks about his musical transitions from north to south, his mixture for success while in the studio, and why tax season might come a bit early in 2007.
