DJ’s “Z”, Caliente & Arcen from DJBooth.net have interviewed R. Kelly protigee and Chi-Town artist on the rise, Royalty.
Always on the grind and trying to do big things, Royalty had a recording deal as a solo rap artist with RCA in 2001 and in 2004 became the youngest black record label executive in music history when Capitol Records hired him as director of A&R (and a staff producer) at age 24. Executive produced by R. Kelly, Royalty’s upcoming release gives listeners its first person point of view on the agony and ecstasy of being human in the hood. The album’s first single in regular rotation on major urban radio, Text Me, is characterized by the mack line (and R. Kelly sample from “Sex Me”): “Text me / Write whatever you like / and we gon’ do what it do tonight.”
Reppin’ his hometown of Chicago real hard throughout, Royalty talks about the pressure of succeeding at such a young age, being thrust into an industry that rarely can be kind to young up-in-coming artists and precisely why he won’t have to worry about going bald in his mid-30’s. Take a listen to someone who ”Got Next.”
