What happens when you mold the sounds of the Caribbean together and fuse them with R&B, dancehall, calypso and soul? Quite simply, the Jamaican duo of Brick & Lace (composed by sisters Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne).
Originally from the city of Kingston, Brick & Lace have undergone plenty of change throughout their brief career. The ladies not only started their career under a different record label, but also featured a third group member. Asked to be released from Jive Records, because the label didn’t understand their direction, they quickly found a home with the Interscope Records imprint of Geffen. In-between the signings however is when they made their most important move.
Singer Lauryn Hill asked the duo to sing back up for her, and they subsequently gained work as a feature on her forth-coming (and long overdue) second album.
Currently buzzing throughout the industry, their maiden voyage Love Is Wicked is scheduled for a first quarter release early next year. The album features production from the likes of Akon, Raphael Saadiq, Tony Kelly (Sean Paul, Beenie Man), Full Force (Ashanti), and Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas). The lead single produced by Akon, Get That Clear, is a sure-fire success for both the radio and club.
During their interview with DJ “Z,” Brick & Lace discuss the whereabouts of the long lost third member to their group, how they got invited to jump on the hook for Obie Trice’s single Jamaican Girl, and what listeners and fans can expect from their Geffen Records debut album at the start of 2007.
