Obecalp's TOP HIP HOP SINGLES

Sabrina Sabrina - “They Don't Know What I've Been Through”

“Production is absolutely soundtrack ready. The vocals in this track seem like they're very cross genre. This is the type of track you hear at a trendy lounge, it's borderline rnb. But since I rather enjoy this style of music, I have to give Sabrina props, as she really injected a lot of soul into a production so odd and unique.”

Bow Wow Bow Wow - “You Can Get It All ft. Johnta Austin”

“It's a fantastic sounding track with bow wow. I wish there was a little more from Johnta Austin, instead of dropping the 'wooo-hooo' in the false, as this is EXACTLY the type of track that he shines on. I definitely agree that bow wow was trying to emulate Nelly's singing runs, but I give him credit for being able to pull it off with decent results. The only thing that really sticks out for me, is the lack of polish in the production, I really feel it could be cleaned up a little bit. The beat is hot and works well, but they should've spent just a bit more time tightening it up.”

The-Dream The-Dream - “My Love ft. Mariah Carey”

“^^^ Okay the Nick Cannon comment was hilarious! It's been a while since we've heard a song with this kind of feel to it on the booth. I think this is the realm that the-dream really thrives in and where he doesn't sound a bit ridiculous. And MC actually sounds like mariah many many years ago, a lot more emotion and really digging into the song. Can definitely see this track getting quite a few plays.”

Keyshia Cole Keyshia Cole - “You Complete Me”

“This track simply proves that Keyshia Cole is an amazing vocal artist. It's waning away from what she's been doing before and moving towards more of an adult contemporary side. I can definitely see her branching off into different audiences.”

Charles Hamilton Charles Hamilton - “November 10”

“I really have to give props to Charles Hamilton, his stuff is always made creative and I can never really predict what his next track is gonna sound like. For those who are a bit put off from this track upon first listen, give it another listen and open your mind a bit; I'm quite certain his stuff is meant to be heard with open ears.”

Shontelle Shontelle - “T-Shirt (Remix) ft. The-Dream”

“After hearing this track get a lot of air play, there's definitely a familiarity going on with it. The original had such a wonderful vibe to it, and the remix hasn't shifted (obviously since the general tone hasn't changed). Though I may be being a bit biased, since I'm a pretty big the-dream fan, the remix has definitely given the track a little kick and hotness to bring it out of a bit of dullness. What kind put me off balance was the-dream trying to throw a little island flavor at us. It was a bit off putting at first, but I definitely started feeling it after a second listen.”

Maino Maino - “However Do You Want It ft. Soul II Soul”

“Great sample of Back to Life! Really throws me back to the early 90s, JR turns an overused beat into something unique that Maino can infuse his 'catchy' style into.”

T.I. T.I. - “Live Your Life ft. Rihanna”

“This is probably one of the best singles I've heard in a while. It has all the elements for success; T.I. is doing the way he should, Rihanna is just on straight fire, the beat is absolutely catchy & hot, and it has loads of commercial appeal. When I heard this song a while ago, the numa numa sample intro had me rather worried. But the way Rihanna infused it into her style just worked for her. And absolutely this track should have been selected as the first single. It was well received at the MTVVA's, having Rihanna on your track instantly jumps it up on the hotness scale, and this track completely eclipses 'Whatever You Like'.”

“This guy keeps on impressing me. He makes every sample work very very well for him. Keep it coming!”

Estelle Estelle - “Come Over ft. Sean Paul”

“I really liked this track on her album (definitely check it out if you haven't). This is actually a nice little change up; I think the beat received a bit more of an island treatment and Sean Paul makes a pretty good matched pair with Estelle. The styles really meld together to give us something really chill. Estelle is definitely a refreshing talent that I hope to hear more and more from. Hopefully she gets to do more big name collabs and really get her style out there.”

Eric Benét Eric Benét - “You're The Only One”

“This is very interesting for me, his voice doesn't seem like a natural fit for RnB tracks. But the arrangement used and the lyrical flow really sings to me. The up-tempo beat really works for him though. Unfortunately the style he's going after has been done time and time again, it's lacking a bit of originality oomf to really set it off for me.”

Ne-Yo Ne-Yo - “She Got Her Own ft. Fabolous & Jamie Foxx”

“I've found Jamie Foxx to be very hit or miss on rnb track, but I'm glad to say that he was dead on point this track. Fab actually did a decent job on this track as well, I thought he would ruin the feel that you get after the first 30secs. Fab's flow worked suprisingly well. Smart track leading to his album release next week, I'm getting pretty excited about it!”

Outasight Outasight - “Good Evening (Dream Big)”

“He sounds a little like Andre 3000. But I have to give it up to him for being so unique.”

Avant Avant - “When It Hurts”

“WHAT??! Avant is back? Geez, '08 must be RnB throwback year. This is a hot track right here, it still has the swagger he used to bring to his tracks. It does sound relatively 'modern', but it definitely has that early 2000 feel. I feel there's been a bit of a solid RnB dry spell, and I'm glad this track is out here.”

“SAMPLING MR. ROGERS <-- I Bow to his originality!!! And it actually worked out pretty well. I'm really loving his creativity, I love hearing fresh tracks like this.”
