grimm's TOP HIP HOP SINGLES

Clair Promo Photo K. Sparks - “Clair”

“Dreamy, bold, and frightening, this track must be heard for its dedication to giving listeners a dose of reality, while at the same time delivering a track that is brimming with the skill and entertainment value that I've come to expect from K. Sparks.”

Might Take Forever Promo Photo Nike Nando - “Might Take Forever”

“Now this is strange...the folksy beat might be a turn-off for some, but I found it refreshing, and it's pretty cheery. I actually got some of my more rock-oriented friends to listen to this...definitely a genre buster. Definitely give it a try! @richard: That sample sound like some sort of an Irish folktune-not that I know much about those.”

Wish Me Luck Promo Photo Governor - “Wish Me Luck”

“I like it when artists take some chances with their vocals, and the Governor doesn't disappoint. His rhymes are tight, and he isn't afraid to croon out some of those high notes. A smooth, but not outstanding beat rounds things out, but the Gov is the real star here.”

Not Afraid Promo Photo Eminem - “Not Afraid”

“Oh my. Everybody, take Em's hand. You're not alone. It channels Beautiful, but takes it one step further. It's not hype. This track is real. Bobby Ray, I'm sure Em didn't mean to steal your thunder the week of your album release, but it happens. He's back folks. Get ready.”

Styles P. Styles P. - “It's Over”

“I was initially really put off by the beat. I believe firmly that songs shouldn't yell at me...that's why I'm posting here on the Booth and not on some sh*tty death metal site. But I sure am glad I kept listening to the point where I put this track on repeat. That background voice imparted a sense of quiet desperation that really stuck with me after a while. The rest of the production, with its organ-esque synth and epic horns makes for a diverse yet cohesive beat. The vocals are excellent, as many have pointed out. It's extremely...umm...confident, as evidenced by that Listerine line. It's intense while remaining fluid. Great stuff. This sounds real fresh, and you should check it out. @Z and my fellow Boothers, can you recommend any more sick tracks from Styles? I'm checking the back catalog on the Booth now, but I'd like to get your input.”

Freddie Gibbs Freddie Gibbs - “Personal OG”

“Freddie, Freddie, Freddie. You're one subtle cat. Entertaining rhymes, watertight flow, and a relaxed confidence characterize the lyrics. @Mr. Top Hat, I agree. Natural is a great word to describe the flow. Great, spacy production. Richard and my fellow Boothomites have already said what needs to be said, and I agree again. The sing-songy chorus near the end was a bit annoying, but that's nitpicking. @Sons of Ireland, I don't know what flowetric actually means, but it sounds appropriate. Don't miss this one.”

Braille Braille - “Up”

“Bass, synth, sick rhyme, repeat. I like the direction of the production. I'm a sucker for bass-backboned tracks, and the bass here doesn't disappoint. It comes very close to being overwhelming, but it manages to stay entertaining and pulsing. @Z, I agree about the lyrics. i really didn't notice the lyrics until the second playthrough, but once they hit I was impressed by the deliberate pace and intensity. Hopefully it gets some club play...I dig the slow and intense beat and lyrics. This is my kind of track, so I'll break from the pack a bit and help raise it's score.”

“No in depth review this time. Longer. Better lyrics. And Eminem. Don't even think about skipping it.”

Supa Eazy Promo Photo Hollyweerd - “Supa Eazy”

“Wow, that first verse made me sit up immediately and listen. Initially I was focused on the laid back production with the slick organ line, the spacy synth, and that money guitar that Sons of Ireland mentioned in their review. It's slower, but it still pulses with energy and creativity. @RyanSX, I agree that the second verse was a bit of a buzzkill after the running start at the beginning, but the relaxed flow grew on me after a couple of listens. It actually fits better with my initial impression of the track. I don't really like the hook though. It feels a bit unfocused and lazy. Maybe because it's so slow and because of that low voice. I like the production and the verses. This track loses a star for the weak hook, but don't get me wrong. It sounds so fresh that it deserves the four star status. Give it a go.”

Venting Promo Photo Young Scolla - “Venting”

“"A big f**k you to whoever don't understand me and look for me to be different that any man I can be..." Amen brother. Well delivered smooth, and intense, this is a great one that's backed up by a simple, effective, and somewhat somber beat. @RLTskillz, I got the same relaxed breezy feeling. Right on. @dubs1270, you're absolutely right. It's respectable to see a man comfortable enough with himself to approach themes that the big names shy away from. I got my eye on you Scolla.”

Blue Swing Promo Photo K. Sparks - “Blue Swing”

“K Sparks!! It's good to see him back in the booth. I've been a fan since Super Senior, and this track doesn't disappoint. He brings his classic, relaxed flow that eases effortlessly into spitting lines left and right. The beat is equally relaxed, with some jazzy piano and subtle drum work that'll have you loungin about in no time. It's already on repeat for me. Check it out right now!! @DJ Z, go find yourself a swing, but make sure to bing your mp3 player with you to set the mood.”

K-Beta K-Beta - “I'm Bleeding”

“Tracks like this are the reason Eminem is my favorite artist. I'll tell you why. There's an honesty here that is so rare in hip hop. Many artists rhyme about adversity, but so few are as soulful and real as K-Beta. He's aggressive, confident, but also mournful without being negative. It makes for a great combination that others can learn from. It loses one star for a beat that I find to be a *little* bit busy. Some simplification would have been great, but that's just nitpicking. I think I'll sample the rest of Inglorious Beta. Definitely give this a listen. It may not be the club banger you're looking for, but it should be heard.”

Mario Mario - “Ohh Baby”

“@DJ GooBoo, I'm surprised you were the only other one to mention the bass in your review...it's excellent and pulses along nicely, as Matt mentioned in the headliner review. Definitely one of my favorite features of the track. @B3rtoB3rto, thanks for mentioning other songs from the album. I was going to ask which other songs on the album were worth picking up, but you anticipated the question. If you hadn't already guessed from the other reviews, this is a great track. Not terribly innovative, but it does the job admirably. Give it a try.”
