DJ Qurlz's TOP HIP HOP SINGLES

Method Man & Redman
Method Man & Redman - “A Yo! ft. Saukrates”

“Ah my prayers are finally answered. Both Meth and Red are great on their own, but when they get together watch out! Blackout was one of my favorite albums for a long time and if this is any indication of the second album I am really looking forward to it. Great chemistry, great production, and great rhymes. Now all they need to do is release How High 2”

Twista Twista - “No Love ft. The Game”

“I am definitely liking the West Coast feel of this song. I haven't commented in a long time, but I had to ask what is up with all the sampling of Spice 1 instrumentals lately? It took me a second to realize why I fell in love with the production instantly. It's because this is Trigga Gots No Heart from Menace II Society. On a sidenote Nipsey Hu$$le's last song was sampling Spice's song Face Of A Desperate Man . If you don't know who Spice 1 is go to the store and by one his cd's right now (I don't care if the store is closed, you better break in and leave an I-Owe-You note).”

Common Common - “Universal Mind Control ft. Pharrell Williams”

“As a big fan of Common I have been looking forward this new album since it was announced. It's definitely got a Bambaatta feel to it which is something I haven't heard in a while. Common comes hard as always and even switches up his flow on this one. In a way I was glad to see that Common wouldn't be working with Kanye on this album. Don't get me wrong they are a great pair, but working with different producers can be refreshing and that is made clear with this song. The question I have now is what will be the rest of the album's "sound." No matter what I will be picking up a copy on the first day.”

Crooked I Crooked I - “Dream Big ft. Akon”

“Crooked I is a lyrical God despite not having a studio album released yet. For those that don't know check out the hip hop weekly series or any of his mixtapes. On this track Crooked I has a bulletproof flow as usual, great production and even some support from Akon. What more could you need. I can't wait for the album to finally drop. Don't sleep on this dude he's one of the best in the game right now.”

Raekwon Raekwon - “Necro ft. Ghostface Killah”

“Straight fire. Great lyrics great production. I love the feel and its an all around classic. Rae and Ghostface continue to prove that they work great together. Now I am dying to get Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2. By the way there isn't anything wrong with sounding as though this song is from the mid-90's and anybody that says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.”

Ne-Yo Ne-Yo - “Trouble”

“Alright I had to come out of reviewer retirement for this one. God Damn! This is classic right here. What more can I say? J.R. Rotem's production is on fire and Ne-yo sounds like he was born to sing this track. From the first note to the last this song doesn't have a down moment in it and that is rare. This shit is so good I don't even want to hear a remix unless the King himself Mike jumps on here. I don't mind remixes, but I don't think its possible to make this song any better than it already is. To me Ne-yo just shitted on everything I have heard R&B lately.”

Sheek Louch Sheek Louch - “D-Block/Dipset ft. Jadakiss, Styles P, Jim Jones & Hell Rell”

“I am very surprised to find that I actually liked this song. For the longest time I have pretty much hated anything that D-Block or Dipset touched, but hey I am going to give props where props is due. I am starting to think it might be the change of pace for D-Block compared to constantly grimey and hard hitting beats they use. Oh yeah by the way I am going to predict DJ Blaze rates this a 5 since he is all about both groups.”

Mavado Mavado - “On The Rock (Remix)”

“Very interesting to hear Jay paired up with a reggae artist, but damn was I impressed. His flow was really on point with on this track. Movado felt like he was the one actually featured on this song though. Jay outshined him easily, but definitively a great vibe. Any fans of the show The Wire, tell me why Movado looks like the stick-up pro Omar?”

Jay-Z & Mary J. Blige
Jay-Z & Mary J. Blige - “You're Welcome ft. Swizz Beatz”

“One word. Fire. Great beat, crazy rhymes, and soulful singing. What more can you ask for? Definitely a good pick for the concert's finale.”

Rick Ross Rick Ross - “Maybach Music ft. Jay-Z”

“I got to agree with Obecalp. This track just pushed me over the edge to pick up Trilla. This beat was perfect for Jay-Z and Rick really held his own with Jay. Overall great collabo.”

Fat Joe Fat Joe - “That White”

“I haven't liked Fat Joe in a while, but I am feeling this one. The Premier beat is great and Joe flows real smooth over this one. It was nice to hear him giving shoutouts to his former D.I.T.C. members in the intro. I still don't think I would spend any money on his new album though.”

Rick Ross Rick Ross - “Luxury Tax ft. Lil' Wayne, Young Jeezy & Trick Daddy”

“God Damn the production was crazy on this one. I am a sucker for 70's sampling. While I was listening I kept picturing this song in a movie. Someone needs to hop on this for a soundtrack. I am not a fan of Jeezy and Wayne, but I will give them props for this one. I am actually interested in Trilla now.”

Common Common - “The Light 2008 (It’s Love) ft. Marsha Ambrosius & Bilal”

“This is a great addition to The Light series. All three have had amazing production, but have all been very different. The original had a great sample by Bobby Caldwell. I would have to say my favorite was the remix off with Erykah Badu off the Bamboozled soundtrack. The best part of this song are references to rhymes in the original. Common is one of the greatest to ever bless the mic. Pick up his second album Resurrection if you don't already have it and you will understand what I mean. This song is just so damn soulful it can't be considered anything but classic.”

The Roots The Roots - “75 Bars (Black’s Reconstruction)”

“What can I say, ?uestlove does his thing on drums and Blackthought spits fire. The rest of the band is pretty nonexistent on this track, but I enjoyed the stripped down feel. As far as I am concerned all of their albums are classics, except for Game Theory which was still light years ahead of these other rappers.”
