In the Box:
-Removable Flat 3ft Cable
-Mini to ¼-inch Gold-Plated Adapter
The Design of the Vestax HMX-05 Headphones is really stylish with a retro-throwback one-piece feel and look to them. The red/black color scheme goes perfectly with the Black Vestax PMC-05PROIV mixer that I have in the DJbooth.net lab and they also look great with the Vestax VCI-400 or VCI-380 DJ controllers. You can definitely see the continuity within the brand. Almost everything a DJ would want is incorporated into this versatile and practical design. Starting at the bottom; the HMX-05’s come with a removable 3ft Flat cable with a gold-plated straight mini jack on the end that plugs into the headphones and an angled gold plated mini jack on the other end for the connected devices. The cable only needs to be connected to the left earpiece for complete stereo playback. Some DJ’s prefer the coiled cable for DJ use but personally, I like the uncoiled short style cables that cannot get tangled or caught up on knobs and cases in the DJ booth.
The earpcups on the outside are completely made from plastic. The earcups themselves sit on a swivel joint that attaches them to the headband. The ends of the headband where the earcups are attached shows the Vestax brand logo so everyone can see. The headphones have 40mm drivers that are covered by comfortable memory foam pads and real leather. These pads are wide enough to fit on-the-ear instead of over the ear. The HMX-05 memory foam does an adequate job of isolating the outside sound from what is in your headphones while keeping outside sound to a minimum.
The headphones overall are lightweight since they are made of mostly plastic. There is a hinge mechanism that allows the headphones to be folded down into a smaller form factor so that they can be stored away and transported easier from place to place. The folding action does not allow for different styles of monitoring, but only really works as a space-saving way to store them. The headband itself is very flexible and can twist and bend to extremes without damage or stress. The inside of the headband has a rubberized style of coating on it but No-Padding whatsoever.
The design looks great aesthetically, but in use, I had a few issues. For starters, the headband is pretty sturdy so after about 20-30 minutes of use, there was slight discomfort at the top of the head where the headband makes contact. Secondly, the headphones overall really clamp down tightly on the head and ears making them uncomfortable for me to wear after about 30 minutes of continuous use. The third issue that I had with this design is that the actual hinge where the actual metal screws attach to is made up entirely of plastic. The joint of the headphones is usually the first point of failure, so it would have been much better suited include some sort of metal support in this area.
The Sound Quality of the Vestax HMX-05 Professional DJ headphones is good, but it all depends on the sound you are looking for... They have 40mm diameter drivers with thick diaphragms and high quality voice coils to provide medium levels of bass, highly amplified Mids and good playback all around. The Vestax HMX-05 headphones exhibit deep bass but without the thick vibration that some other DJ headphones in its class seem to portray. You don’t get the crazy-vibrant bass with these headphones, but you do get loud and clear Mid-range while still producing clear and crisp highs.
As volumes get louder and move towards the “red”, the Vestax HMX-05 headphones handled it well with the highs and lows showing the majority of the distortion after the 70% volume mark. These are a loud set of headphones and they could certainly be used in a DJ booth as they would drown out background noises and would provide an adequate volume for monitoring needs. I tested these headphones on my Vestax PMC-05proIV mixer and the Traktor Kontrol Z2 Mixer via two separate setups. HMX-05 headphones always sound good no matter how we used them or what we hooked them up to. In terms of my subjective ears, I would say that the HMX-05 headphones are very comparable, in terms of sound quality, to other $100-$150 professional DJ headphones on the market. Overall, the HMX-05 headphones have great mid-range response that will play at slightly higher volumes than the lows and the highs. The lows will be somewhat subdued but deep and the highs are crispy.
Conclusion / Recommended For
In conclusion the Vestax HMX-05 headphones are an average set of Professional DJ headphones with some pretty cool features that DJ’s would appreciate. The HMX-05’s have good sound quality, they come a removable 3ft flat cable, they are compact and lightweight, and they have a foldable design for easy storage and transport.
There are a few gripes that I have with the Vestax HMX-05 headphones with the first being the actual hinges are made of complete plastic with no metal reinforcement. They still feel sturdy and rugged overall, but this is a weak point in the design that is worth pointing out. The HMX-05’s also are pretty uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of continuous use. The Headband doesn’t have any padding for the top of your head and the force that the headphones use to clamp down on your head is pretty hard.
Despite these issues, we still like the HMX-05 headphones and we are going to recommended them to DJ’s who have a Vestax inspired setup or for those who want a cool looking headphone that can work well for the DJ booth as well as for other all around listening needs.
