Design: The V-Moda LP2 Limited Edition Matte Black Headphones are designed with extremely high-quality standards in mind. Just as with the original V-Moda Crossfade LP2’s takes the original V-Moda Crossfade LP’s and refines them ever so slightly to deliver slightly better sound quality than their predecessors. When comparing the two side by side and using the specifications, I can’t find anything different between the two editions except for the color scheme. The advertised differences are: Fine-tuned sound, no V-Moda Branding, additional Gunmetal color shields, and a two year warranty as apposed to the one year offered on the original LP's. The matte black color and red design cues are really fashionable and have a nice overall aesthetic to them with interchangeable earcup shields for customization. They have removable metal faceplates on each earcup that can be replaced with other designs or custom logos (sold separately). The V-Moda Crossfade LP2’s are mostly made out of metal and they feel nearly indestructible. The top of the Headband can bend and flex in ways I did not think was possible, while the actual sides that connect to the earcups (a common point of headphone failure) are all metal and built to last. The padding on the headband is about an inch or so thick and provides good cushion for long performances or extended usage.
The earcups themselves are over-the-ear style 50mm drivers which were big enough to cover my whole ear comfortably. They did a great job of isolating the outside sounds from interfering with my monitoring needs, even though they did not have any noise cancelling feature. I used these headphones for a gig that I had a couple weeks ago and the DJ monitoring performance of the V-Moda Crossfade LP2’s was right on par or better than the other professional-grade headphones that I have tested and reviewed in the past (ie BEATS PRO, Xone XD:53, Technics RPH, etc..). Even though the music was very loud and I had active monitors right in front of my face, I only had to turn up the headphone volume on my mixer half-way in order to accurately monitor my mixes. The Crossfade LP2’s come with a hard carry case called the Exoskeleton Case which provided more than enough protection for these cool headphones while also looking stylish in the process. The Case also has two removable Velcro pouches that can be used to carry the extra cables or other DJ goodies that you may need. The V-Moda Crossfade LP2 headphones also comes with (2) Kevlar reinforced cables that are built to last for the lifetime of the headphones. One of the two Kevlar cables also has a 3-button remote and Microphone built-in for smartphone usage.
Sound Quality: The Sound quality of the V-Moda Crossfade LP2 Limited Edition headphones is very impressive. The highs and mids were very crisp and legible without being overbearing. The lows were heavy and punchy with superb bass response and handling found on the oversized 50mm drivers in each ear. The levels of the lows, mids, and highs don’t drown out one another nor did I hear any bleed through of the highs over into the lows or vice-versa. The 50mm drivers were more than adequate enough to produce deep bass without crazy distortion. Even at super-high volumes, distortion was basically non-existent. They deliver excellent 3D quality sound all around, with great sound isolation as well. The V-Moda Crossfade LP2 Limited Edition headphones are definitely in the upper echelon when it comes to the sound department. So much so that I think these will be my new premier set of headphones for performances going forward.
Conclusion: The first time we reviewed a V-Moda product was with the True Blood V-Moda V-80 headphones which are basically the on-the-ear version of these new V-Moda Crossfade LP2 LE’s that we reviewed here. We were blown away by the smaller headphones and we are equally blown away by the “bigger-brother” over-the-ear edition LP2’s. As soon as a DJ opens the package on a set of V-Moda headphones, you can immediately see the professionalism, quality, and care that V-Moda takes to ensure you are getting a top of the line piece. These are truly professional headphones with features that will appease DJ’s, producers, and regular MP3 or Smartphone users who want a high-quality set of headphones that also look really cool and stylish. The LP2’s are built like tanks with a lightweight, steel construction and an Ergonomic Steelflex headband. The V-Moda Crossfade LP2 Limited Edition Headphones have some nice crisp sound quality and good sound isolation as well. In other words, they are worth every bit of the $230 price tag that they come with. I could only find one small gripe with the V-moda LP2 headphones which is the fact that they do not have a collapsible or swivel design for DJ's who like to have their earphones in different configurations or shapes when spinning. Overall, I am very impressed by the style, sound quality, durability, and features of these compact headphones...so much so that I WILL definitely have to keep these for myself...(sorry V-Moda!) The V-Moda Crossfade LP2 Limited Edition Matte Black Headphones are recommended to anyone who wants a really high quality, premier set of headphones for performances, personal listening, and smartphone control. The LP2’s have excellent sound quality and they are also built to last!
