The new DJ Tech SL-1300MK6 Professional Vinyl (Analog) Direct-Drive DJ turntable was recently released to the market for DJ's worldwide to purchase and experience a SUPER-OEM turntable like never before. The DJ Tech SL-1300MK6 is endorsed by the DMC-Online World DJ Championships and for very good reason.
These turntables have 3.5kg of startup torque, removable target light, dual start/stop buttons for battle DJ's and much more. Some parts on these turntables look very familiar because they are also known as the “Super-OEM” turntable which shares the same internals as the Stanton ST-150, the Numark CDX, the American Audio HDT4.5, Audio Technica AT-LP1240USB and a few other decks that have been around since about 2005. The “Super-OEM” turntables are still arguably the best turntables for DJ’s in the world with the best and strongest motor out on the market today.
Turntablists all over the world swear by them and they are now proven in the longevity category with a 7-year history already in the books. Some of the Turntables actually dumb-down the motor speed a bit in order to give a "closer-to-1200" feel than some of the others. The SL-1300MK6 startup torque is rated at 3.5kg while the Stanton ST-150's are rated at 4.5kg. This difference can be felt, but it's still more than adequate enough for anything a DJ can throw at it.
The DJ Tech SL-1300MK6 retains all of these excellent qualities while also having three color schemes to choose from. They come in Black, Silver, and our review unit Orange. The upper body of the turntable is a painted polymer with steel and metal reinforcements throughout while the lower portion of the deck is a very heavy rubber material for dampening and isolation purposes. These are some heavyweight turntables at 20lbs each, but not nearly as heavy as the Stanton or Audio Technica SUPER-OEM turntables.
These must save some weight with the Polymer top instead of the all-metal build in those two units. It's still very sturdy and heavy and definitely built to last for years to come. Along with getting an excellent turntable with an excellent motor, there are lots of nice extra features such as the ability to play records in 33, 45, and 78 RPM, a reverse play button, adjustable pitch range buttons (10%, 20%, 50%), internal power grounding, rubber feet, replaceable LED Target light, and two start/stop buttons aligned in the perfect position for turntablists and scratch DJ's who like to place their decks in the battle configuration. To top it all off, it comes with a nice felt slip mat and a good headshell to get you started.
We tested the DJ Tech SL-1300MK6 with a Shure M44-7 cartridge and the results were just as we expected. The tracking was just right after we setup the tonearm height/weight and there was not a skip to be heard or seen during our scratch battle and juggling sessions. Everything just felt SOLID in every sense of the word. All of the buttons have a more rubberized feel to them over the other Super-OEM turntable models and they all have an audible click so you can be sure if you activated the button or not. The buttons also have an LED indicator right above them so you know exactly what options are selected. The pitch slider felt solid with lots of resistance and does not have a center click to it, but there is a blue LED next to the absolute zero marker so you know when you are at perfect vinyl speed.
One big difference between the SL-1300MK6 and other Super-OEM turntables is the Motor Off button that is near the tonearm of the unit. Most turntables have a motor off style twist-switch that the Technics 1200 made standard back in the day. The SL-1300MK6 has the motor off button that has an LED indicator to let you know if the motor is in the off or on position. The Motor Off functions the same as with any other Motor off twist-switch, but it took a little time getting used to the placement and the feel of having a button control this feature instead of a twist-switch. One of my other minor gripes is that there is no start and stop speed adjustment knobs on this SUPER-OEM turntable while most of the others out there have this option. With such a strong motor, some DJ's like to remove some of the startup torque from the motor by adjusting the startup speed, and they also like to do different transitions and effects with the stop speed adjustments, but this turntable will not allow you to do this. My last minor gripe is that the SL-1300MK6 deck does not come with a dust cover. It doesn't seem like much of a big deal right now, but when the dust starts piling up on your turntables, you will know what I mean...
Conclusion / Recommended For
In conclusion, we recommend the DJ Tech SL-1300MK6 Professional Turntables to any DJ or Turntablist who is very serious about their craft and need a serious deck for practicing and honing their skills. The SL-1300MK6 is one of the best out there on the market today and the DMC-Online championship endorsement should also give you more confidence in these decks. The DJ Tech SL-1300MK6 turntable has a unique look, solid construction, super-strong motor, all the extra features that DJ's want, and it also it has a USB port and cable for transferring your vinyl collection to a computer. Even though there is no dust cover, no start/stop time adjustments, and the motor off button takes a little time getting used to, these decks are still solid and definitely worthy of a look when a DJ is in the market for a professional DJ quality turntable.
