New DJ Equipment Reviews
The new Reloop RP-8000 Professional Hybrid MIDI DJ turntables sport some of the familiar Super-OEM turntable DNA including the same high-torque motor and tonearm that is found on the Stanton ST-150, Reloop RP-6000, AT-LP1240, while still maintaining a “Technics 1200” layout and feel. Even though the Reloop RP-8000 shows some of the same characteristics as it’s Super-OEM brethren, it also has a few additional features that you can’t find anywhere else including: a digital Pitch LED display, eight rubberized MIDI pads, four MIDI layer buttons, and an over-sized encoder knob which can all be mapped to any MIDI compatible DJ software out on the market today.
The Numark NS7II Professional Digital DJ controller is the successor to the original (and wildly popular) NS7 which was released a few years ago by Numark as the first all-in-one DJ control surface to include motorized platters with real vinyl and slip mats instead of jog wheels for track control. The new NS7II keeps the same stellar build quality, footprint size, and actively spinning platters as seen on the original, while adding two additional decks of control, touch sensitive EQ and FX controls, and 16 authentic AKAI Professional MPC pads to control features such as loops, hotcues, and slicers.
The Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear headphones sport a minimalistic design that is all business with a solid metal construction and top-tier materials used throughout. Although early on we realized that the Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear Headphones were not really suited for Professional DJ use, they do perform well with almost every other listening application or multimedia need due to great sound characteristics and a lightweight yet comfortable construction with soft Alcantara headband and earcups.
The Sennheiser HD 25 Aluminium headphones were created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sennheiser HD 25 headphone superiority in the DJ and Professional audio realm. The new HD 25 Aluminium edition headphones sport aluminum earcups for more durability and slightly better sound characteristics.
Pioneer has recently released the new S-DJ X monitor lineup that is affordable and squarely aimed at DJ's who want good performance speakers with a small form factor. The Pioneer S-DJ X range comes in either the five-inch (S-DJ50X), the six-inch (S-DJ60X), or the eight-inch (S-DJ80X) woofer configurations and have an auto on/off mode to save on power when not in use. These speakers are powered internally by an AB amplifier and Pioneer says that the technology in the woofer design and front port found on these speakers improve air flow with “Groove Technology” for deep and vibrant bass. We now have a pair of S-DJ80X monitor speakers in the DJbooth Lab for the full review treatment so check out how they held up during our tests in the review below.
The Hercules Light Show DJ Headphones are nearly identical to the previously reviewed Hercules Pro M1001 headphones with the inclusion of internal lights on the outside of the ear cups that pulsate to the sound of the music. The lights are powered by an internal rechargeable battery which can be connected via USB to micro-USB cable when a refill is necessary. The Light Show headphones have a swivel and fold style design for the 50mm drivers that fit completely over-the-ears for good isolation.
A little over two years ago, Vestax released the Pad One which is a completely MIDI Mapable and compact controller which works nicely for both DJ and production style needs. The Vestax Pad One sports an all aluminum chassis, 12 Velocity Sensitive Performance Pads, an X-Y touch-pad, and the ability to make MIDI edits on the fly without touching the computer. Check out our quick mini-video review and summary to see if the Pad One can fit into your own personal setup.
The Pioneer XDJ-R1 is a new all-in-one DJ system that can be used in many different ways and using many different combinations of media for music playback. The Pioneer XDJ-R1 can function as a two-deck DJ controller that can work with almost any DJ software of your choice (comes bundled with Virtual DJ LE). The XDJ-R1 can also function as a true standalone two channel DJ mixer, it can playback audio files directly from on-board USB flash/hard drives, and it can even be used in conjunction with Rekordbox and Remotebox in order to wirelessly control most of the DJ functions using compatible iOS & Android Wi-Fi enabled devices that are running the Rekordbox Pioneer DJ library software. The XDJ-R1 goes even a step further than the XDJ-AERO we reviewed late last year by adding dual CD slots in the front of the XDJ-R1 to allow users to playback music from CD’s. All of these functions can be performed on each deck individually meaning the DJ has the choice of using the XDJ-R1 in hybrid mode to mix between different tracks in various different playback modes.
