The DJ Booth… We never miss a beat…

Best New Artist (Signed) of 2009

In our first annual Best of the Booth awards, you selected Toronto phenom Drake as “Breaking Through in '09.” Well, give yourselves a pat on the back – 12 short months later, the rapper born Aubrey Graham has ascended to near-household name status with the help of one revolutionary mixtape (So Far Gone, of course) and a few megahit records (“Best I Ever Had,” “Forever...”). Next step for Young Money's MVP? Debut album Thank Me Later, due out in March.

Runner Up:
J. Cole
Drake, Drake, Drake, Drake, Drake. Whether you were a hyperventilating teenage girl or a hardcore hip-hop head there was no avoiding the young man's name this year, and those that opened their ears to his flow discovered an emcee absolutely laden with talent. From his blazing mixtape So Far Gone to his solo breakthrough "Best I Ever Had" to a long list of guest and collaboration successes, Drake absolutely owned 2009.

He deserved it. He deserves the attention he's getting. He's a hard worker, and his music is raw and honest.

I will remember this as the year of Drake... where he went from an aspiring actor to a can't miss Hip Hop rookie. While it's still way too early to call him one of the best (seeing as he hasn't even released a full studio album yet), his "So Far Gone" mixtape will go down as one of the most memorable Hip Hop compilations that weren't initially meant to be sold. Dude's got a plan!

Wow, I guess I expected the reader's pick to be Drake, but I was hoping that the staff here was a little more educated on hip hop. Anybody who has actually LISTENED to either of J. Cole's mixtapes understands why he is a better rapper than Drake. LOL@whoever said Drake's music is "raw". In what respect? He's the only rapper I've ever heard pat himself on the back for being 'honest' about @*#$! hoes. What else? LISTEN to the music people. J. Cole is the truth.
