Best Mixtape/Street Album of 2009
Reader's Pick
Drake "So Far Gone"
The only 2009 mixtape that would have made a more-than-solid showing in our “Best Album” category, the hotly-anticipated So Far Gone marked Drake's transition from “buzzworthy up-and-comer” to “hip-hop megastar” Featuring the T-Dot native's Billboard-smashing debut single, “Best I Ever Had,” in addition to acclaimed cuts like “I'm Going In” and “Uptown,” SfG is destined to go down in history as one of the most “Successful” street releases of all time.
Staff Pick
XV "Everybody's Nobody"
So Far Gone was damn good, and The Warm Up was absolutely deserving in its own right, but ultimately it was XV's Everybody's Nobody that earned a place in our stereos week after week, month after month. Great mixtapes become part of our lives, and in 2009 XV was playing the background while we ate, while we worked and while we...well, let's just say we've got some very happy memories of Everybody's Nobody.

So Far gone is the BEST Mixtape of 2009. I thought Lil Wayne had a bunch of good ones too. I played this OUT quickly!

Very gutsy call, staff. I thought "So Far Gone" would be the ultimate landslide (it likely woulda gotten a lot of votes for Best Album had it been on there), but XV certainly pulled a strong victory in that regard. The majors will flock to him, but will any handle him right?

I'm still bumping Everybody's Nobody and Warm Up both were great, so I would of been happy for either one.

Both of these were great, but my pick was Novel's "Suspended Animation". However, neither of the two picks here are anywhere close to any level of mediocrity.

So Far Gone is a great mixtape, so I would of been shocked if it hadnt won. The Warm Up was also a pretty tight album.
besides So Far Gone, 'Diary Of An ATL Brave' by Donnis was my favorite mixtape of 2009 and it wasnt even nominated |

I thought So Far Gone & No Ceilings were both great mixtapes, but So Far Gone was definitely the best to me. I have yet to hear all of Everybody's Nobody but everything ive heard from it so far was good.

New music dominated my 2009, I listened to more new releases than any other year in my life. With new Mixtapes/EPs arriving daily, I struggled at times to keep up with the deluge, but was rewarded in the end with a wealth of quality music.
Here are my favorite 10 Mixtapes (basically 'Free Downloads') of 2009: 10. D.Focis - Be Strong LP An absolutely brilliant album that’s more overlooked that Gary Coleman at a basketball match. A sure shot win for anyone with ears for soulful beats and a brain to to dissect lyrics/messages filled with positive energy. Check it out! 9. The ILLZ - Pursuit LP As cliche as it sounds, ILLZ pushes the boundaries of rap music and, during a time when (still) many people feel Hip-Hop has become stale, has found a way to come with something fresh. Check it out! 8. Donny Goines - The Breakfast Club Donny Goines and friends runs rampant over the shifting moods and tempos of the music, weaving tales and tongue-twisters in his way. And even though there's several cooks stirring the stew, at the end of the day, everyone drowning a spoon in it will go 'hmmmm' and rub his/her tummy. Cause the beats are tasty. Solid from start to finish. Check it out! 7. Pugs Atomz & Rashid Hadee - Stormy LP With "Stormy LP", Pugs Atomz and Rashid Hadee have created one of the sleeper’s sleeper records of 2009. This is one seriously soulful slab of hip hop. 6. B.o.B. - B.o.B Vs Bobby Ray Get ready for The Great Adventures of Bobby Ray! 5. J. Cole - The Warm Up One of the best pure on-the-rise spitters in the game today. He really set the bar pretty high with this one. 4. Drake - So Far Gone Everyone has at least some version of this mixtape in their library. Order ends here, these all tie: 3. Novel - Suspended Animation I haven't stopped listening to it since July 3rd, 2009. 2. Mike Dreams - Counting Sheep Mixtape Liking this is as simple as liking an artist with great lyrics and quality musicianship. You know a mixtape’s got some sh*t for that a$$ when you find a “new favorite” each week. Mike Dreams for sure has proven to many that he has what it takes to be a force to be reckoned with in the industry, now it is just up to everyone out there to help spread the word and get this guy some well deserved recognition! 1. XV - Everybody's Nobody Straight up, I cannot tell you how much I have rinsed this mixtape! Simply put, it’s dope! And with every listen I seem to love it more and more. This really ruled the previous Year, in terms of playability. |

Both of these mixtapes were equally as good and it is a very hard pick to distinguish which one is better, Drakes lyricism was amazing and mind boggling at the very same time... hmm Decisions, Decisions (I've forgotten what I voted in the first place but i'm assuming I voted one out of these two).

Whtz funny about this 2 me is that i read this post be4 nd i read what they had 2 say about xv nd i read the comments regardin xv and his mixtape but i still was like "What the @*#$! is a xv??" nd paid no mind 2 him...
Boy that was a big mistake. smh.. This dude is AMAZING and its crzi that hes so known with hip-hop heads nd hes gettin co-signed from other big-name artists but nobody knows him.. I guess Everybody's Nobody realli does suit him well. This is not a mixtape, its a dam album and he needs to have a label deal right NOW!! Waiting patiently for "Vizzy Zone" & "The Kid With The Green Backpack" |
