Like China under Chairman Mao or Russia under Stalin, hip-hop has its dictators too. Everyone has their personal preferences, but the hip-hop dictator believes that if they don’t like something, then not only is it fundamentally bad, but no one else should enjoy it either. We all know dictators – they come from every style and region - and they are all idiots.
What the dictators don’t understand is that hip-hop is a lot like the movies. For example, if you love serious dramas then you probably hate Terminator, but that doesn’t make Terminator a bad movie, just a bad serious drama. So why should hip-hop be any different? Backpackers calling hustle rap wack, and hustlers calling conscious rap soft, is like a serious drama fan calling Arnold Schwarzenegger a bad actor. He is - unless you like action movies, in which case he’s a legend.
If there’s one man hip-hop dictators hate, someone they’ve even called proof of hip-hop’s “death,” it’s Young Jeezy. It’s ridiculous to blame a Snowman for what plagues the music industry; it’d be more accurate to call Jeezy the Schwarzenegger of the rap game. If you’re looking for nuance and complexity then look somewhere else, but if you like watching s**t explode, then Jeezy’s your man. Nowhere is this more evident than on his latest effort The Recession, an album that won’t win any awards, but will win respect from anyone who loves cranking the volume until their speakers spontaneously combust.
The U.S. economy may be in a recession, but The Recession might hold one of the richest collections of southern trap production ever assembled. Just take the title track The Recession (Intro), a joint that leads off the album with a symphonicly monstrous beat courtesy of DJ Toomp. How epic is this beat? If I was in the Marines and we were flying in a helicopter on our way to assault an enemy compound, I’d want Intro playing in the background. Impressively, Intro is a good indication of the production quality of the album as a whole. From the surprisingly 70’s funk-styled Circulate to the rider/opera Crazy World, The Recession features an impressive production roster, and with Jeezy’s voice typically sounding like it went through a paper shredder all he has to do is spit a couple decent verses and the track will bang. Sure, the constant synth blasts and snare rolls get repetitive, but when you’re watching an action movie can there ever be too many exploding cars?
I can hear the dictators now: “Nathan, I could give a s**t about dope beats, I love lyricism and that’s why I can’t stand Jeezy’s triple-beam rhyme style.” Fair enough. The chances of the Snowman spitting a metaphor are about as good as the chances of Trina becoming celibate, but that doesn’t mean he can’t play his lyrical role to perfection. Let’s take Put On. The most complex Jeezy’s gets on Put On is dropping a coke-dealers’ version of a riddle, “what’s whiter than a napkin, harder than a dinner plate?” and rhyming “broccoli” with “glock with me,” but his boldly swaggering verses are a perfect contrast to Kanye’s introspective verse, a balance that ultimately makes the song a hit. (Note to Jeezy - never do that singing thing in the beginning of the track ever again.) Even better, Jeezy directly addresses all the dictators out there on Word Play, saying “I’m way too intelligent to play up my intelligence.” He’s smart enough to know he’s not Nas, and he’s not going to pretend to be. Listen, when I need some mental exercise I turn on Lupe, but while I’m at the gym I’ve got Jeezy on my iPod. I’d like to believe hip-hop’s got room for both.
That doesn’t mean Jeezy doesn’t occasionally make straight-up bad music. On the surface Vacation is a refreshingly laid-back joint, until you realize that Jeezy’s taking a vacation from paper stacking to, well, stack paper. The production’s enjoyable, but it’d be nice to hear Jeezy take a vacation from the cash talk. Even more disappointing is My President, a track where Jeezy discredits his own political ambitions by spitting “My president is black, my Lambo is blue,” then proceeds to talk about his rims. What happened to your president Jeezy? My President’s not going to be Obama’s theme song, Nas’ guest verse aside it’s barely about Obama, and it’s not going on my playlist, but luckily hip-hop’s not a dictatorship. You’re free to bump whatever you want, and if you’re on a mission to bang some serious trap music than you’ve found a friend in The Recession.

Agree 1,000% with this review. All the Jeezy fans can say what they want about this album, but it did not live up to expectations. Jeezy has labeled himself as not just a rapper, but a motivational speaker, and he does just that, but the bottom line is...the songs just aren't that good. With 'Put On' obviously being an exception, the tracks are just average sounding material that get a ton of hype because of "The Snowman". I was a huge Jeezy fan, but his newest single "Vacation" is my least fav song on the radio right now and the rest of the album isn't giving me much belief that he will come harder. Sorry fam, this album is a pass for me.

I have to disagree, Jeezy came hard with this album, with minimal guest features he did really well. Some of the beats and catchy hooks make this album very listenable. Honestly I thought it was better than LAX.

NATHAN, Your reviews are really almost perfect..I also agree with cb126405. If you are a jeezy fan, you are going to love this to death, but HALF THE BEATS ARE ALMOST THE SAME!! & in almost all the songs he refers to rims or money (stackin money)..When i heard put on i thought JEEZYS Comin like Chamillionaire..he is broadening his mind..(rememba chamillionaiure when he brought out ridin...everyone thought he was just another typical rapper and a hit wonder (now look at him, cham is like nas and lupe!)..But jeezy is not there in terms of this album
I Mean nathan pointed out "my president". it had the possibility to be a worldwide tune.but refering rims to president JUST DOES NOT WORK (Jeezy might Be pointing out ANYHTING CAN BE ANY COLOUR), and as for Nas, that was the only average verse hes dropped this year. I also have 2 disagree with Juvey88..There is NO WAY this is better than LAX. Lax is almost classic.... anyone agree with mne about my brief review with me or DISAGREE??! |

I concur with this article completely. I have nothing against trap music I jus sometime find myself listening to more than the beat. The beats on this album will catch your attention but its rare he say much. Jezzy don't say yeeaaahh as much and got rid of thaaaats right, but he replace it with nothing his lyrics on this album suxc. My homeboy say it's the best album of the year hardly I think this shit low key garbage, but i might have compared it to his last album I give him a 0/10 in growth 9/10 for beats 2/10 for lyrics 9/10 for hood club bangers and 7/10 for club bangers. put on and the intro gave it a 2 for me.

eb5005 and Tyler E: If you are both entitled to your opinions (that this album is a '5'), then why can't DJBooth be entitled to its opinion of the project? What makes one right or wrong. It's merely interpretation, my friends. Please re-think your "F**k DJBooth stance." Thanks.

I definitely agree one hundred with with Nathan on the review. i liked Jeezy when he first came on the scene, but I tell dudes all the time im not sure if the whole snowman gimmick is gonna last and it will eventually die out and that his lyrics, ad-libs, can ever move to another level if he don't step it up. I always said when the third album drops it will show if he's excelling as a artist. good line nathan when you said. The chances of the Snowman spitting a metaphor are about as good as the chances of Trina becoming celibate, but that doesn’t mean he can’t play his lyrical role to perfection. -- quinton hatfield aka q the question

For some reason, I didn't like Jeezy's last album, but this one isn't that bad. There are certain song on here that I like, and certain ones that I don't, but hey show me a perfect hip-hop album....anyway, this album (Like Nathan Said) is good for not wanting to think much. The songs I do love on this album are My President, and Circulate, but otherwise, good album. Not in the top ten though.

I've got this album on download right now. I'll agree with Nathan on some parts, and disagree on some. Either way, though, this album did do some things for Jeezy. He's got a few bangers out of it, and I personally like the Put On remix because of Jay-Z. The original is hard too, don't get me wrong.
Not the best, since I'll maintain my stand that Nas' Untitled is the best album to drop this year. |

Ok album. No where near as good as I had hoped being a fan of Jeezy. Definatly not the album of the year. That award goes to: "Killer" by Tech N9ne or "Untitled" by Nas; the only two albums that I can say are classics to come out all year. Tech's album was never reviewed on this site for some reason but I couldn't recommend it higher. If you've never listened to him, I highly recommend it. Anyways, the best songs on this album have got to be: Put On, Crazy World, and What They Want. In my personal opinion at least. The whole album is just a bit too generic; all the songs sound the same with the dark beats. Also, Jeezy could really use some more guest features, he simply can't handle songs on his own.

Damn Tyler E; I'm certainly no Jeezy hater, and I thought I laid out a pretty good case for defending Jeezy from criticism: he won't be winning Grammys anytime soon, but he makes good music you can bang the hell out of - nothing wrong with that. Sometimes I feel like heads don't even read the review, just glance at the rating and start writing hate mail. Can't we all just get along?

wooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww this ablum is straight fire. Every song has a sick beat and Jeezy bings it hard on this album. This album is much better then the Games L.A.X. The featured songs and great with Trey Songz. The songs on this album can be listened to over and over becuase there that good. I found my self skipping songs on L.A.X but not on the recession. You have to buy the album becuase you will be satiffied. p.s im pissed at these reviews man i agree with Tyler E dj booth sucks right now

THIS ALBUM SUCKED!!!! ive never heard a jeezy album this bad. or even a jeezy mixtape. or even a usda mixtape. i usually like jeezy because of the badass beats he uses. i for one, liked his last mixtape better than this album. after listening to the entire album, the only song i wanted to hear again was "who dat." thats all. The Inspiration was 10X better than this album. disclaimer: i listened to this on laptop speakers. so i couldnt feel the bass, but the melodies and hooks were all in the same key, all generic, and all repetitive. |

Pretty disappointed in this offering from Young Jeezy overall. I was hopin for him to top The Inspiration, but he didn't even match it. On Inspiration, he had awesome standout tracks like "Go Getta", "Dreamin," and "3AM." I don't hear much of that on this album. He does have some decent tracks. I may jock a few songs like "Vacation," "Who Dat," "Takin It There," and maybe a couple of others. Had the album kept up with the intro, it would've been sick. It doesn't suck, its just not as good as The Inspiration.

Is the booth really letting me down on this? Jeezy comes hard through the whole album. I listened to this whole album feeling all of his songs. The productions on EVERY song was sick. My favorite out of the bunch is how "Welcome Back" on some subs. Straight BANGER. I'll admit this album is not perfect but its higher then what people are currently rating it(the average is 3 stars right now). With all respect I dissagree with the review. This album is straight FIRE! I'll give it a 4. Its worth buying.

Another review on point. smh at anybody calling lax or this a classic. No where close. This album kinda dissapointed me. I expected it to be better. It seems like production wasnt all that and that Jeezy's strong point. Im almost tempted to say The Inspiration is better. Jeezy will never make another Thug Motivation and I didnt expect him to on the release, but he could have done better. Why did the Eminem, Danja, JR, Runners tracks get cut?

Why has hip hop gotten away from the truth f a beat...lyrics are a hip hop artist best friend! yeah I'm a BIG fan of jeezy but listen to the song called "Don't Do it" how many of you can say you visit your friend or family and jail...looking threw tht glass and knowin there is nothing you can say to make them feel better...WOW

I wont rate but I will say this, Jeezy does exactly what I expected from him. You can't buy this album expecting to hear deep lyrics. Everyone knows that my favorite part of hip hop is the lyrics but as most of us know, lyrics are quickly disappearing. What I am trying to say is that considering not many other emcees are lyrically steppin there game up, Jeezy steps up his delivery and flow. Because of that he is still much better than 90% of the game right now. There is no doubt the same snowman idea over and over can get old but I actually think he changed it up a little bit. I believe this album is equal to L.A.X and because of that I will also say this is a 3.5. Forget it I am ratin. I will round up to a 4 but by no means is this a great album. Just another album that I am wondering if anyone will touch Nas' album. The only album which will even come close this album will be Paper trail. This album is just abover average.

This album isn't classic, and neither is L.A.X., but this album goes hard in my opinion, but i've gotta agree on Jeezy's lyrical flow, but i've been a Jeezy fan for a while, and this is no different, i like this album better than Inspiration to, i got the album day it came out, listened to it ever since, i'm tryn to capture the whole album, not just one song lol. but Paper Trails is gonna kill this album anyway, but the one i'm looking forward to the most is Akon's new album..

Everyone needs to cut DJbooth some slack. Everyones entitled to their own opinion. Personally, I agree with this review 100% and I think the Inspiration was much better. I do agree with the majority of the people talking against LAX's low rating though. I'd give it a 4 maybe, but it's surely not a classic. Anyways, this album was way overhyped, even I, as a Jeezy fan, can admit to it's mediocracy. Jeezy's rhymes are weak, the guest features (aside from Kanye and Jay-Z) all dissapoint. The only thing that holds this album from being a complete disaster is it's production. It seems to me a lot of excellent beats were wasted on a mediocre MC. I can tell you all right now, Jeezy isn't in the top 5 in the South, much less in the rap game. Give these beats to Ludacris, Lil' Wayne (who I personally think is overrated) or even Young Buck and the album could've been a classic; the album's mediocracy is solely on Jeezy for this one. Some more guest spots could've helped a lot as well, the first 14 tracks or so all sounded the same due to a lack of guest appearances so by the time Trey Songz jumped in I was already set up to take the CD out of my stereo. Just my personal opinion.

i think these rappers need to focus on fewer tracks and make them really really good, instead of pumping out 25 songs. Work smarter. Take a page out of Kanye, who had the right idea (finally) with Graduation. Fewer tracks, and the whole album worked as an album, not like a collection of songs. Maybe they make more tracks to make CD a more attractive purchase? More songs for your buck? DJ Z or someone in the industry have any idea?

I respect nathan's reviews but both this & lax i have disagreed with, this is at least a 4 while lax is a classic in my eyes. Jeezy is more about the flow then the message in the lyrics, which is usually a good thing when it comes to commercial success, which is what he's looking for. If your looking for a album that goes hard in a good car or home stereo, then this is the album for you. So i think its a 4.5

This Review is SPOT ON NATE! Hit me up sometime because you gotta tell me your writing process on these reviews! They are SICK! AND FOR ANYONE SAYING F*CK THE BOOTH, GO F*CK YOURSELF, BECAUSE WE DO ALL WE CAN TO BRING YOU REVIEWS FIRST AND MUSIC FIRST AND WE JUST TELL IT HOW IT IS...ITS ALL OPINIONATED, BUT YOU WILL NEVER HEAR US TELL SOMEONE F*CK YOU BECAUSE WE DON'T AGREE WITH THEIR SCORE, SO DON'T TELL US THAT, OR YOU CAN SEE ME!
Now that I am done with the rant, we can get back to Jeezy. This album simply proves what I have been saying about Jeezy all this time and that is he is just a mediocre rapper with EXCELLENT/FLAWLESS beats. As I was listening to this album, every single beat is damn near a hit, but when you take the beat away, and the ad libs (ooooooo, and Yeeeeeeeeah), he is really not a good lyricist at all. So He gets 3 stars from me because he and this album are just plain average. There is no substance here whatsoever. Its all good beats that make you bang your head. I mean there are some decent tracks, but that's just it...Decent....GREAT REVIEW! |

donjonjon: I agree with you 100%. It's always been about quality OVER quantity. Artists feel like they have to give their fans their MONIES worth, but they don't realize that doesn't mean NINETEEN track and FOUR bangers. I don't blame the artists as much as label A&Rs.

Tyler E...Get ur head out of jeezy's ass..and listen to this album properly......like dj blaze said..there are some awesome beats..but GOD DAMN Listen to the lyrics..does he have to relate everything to rims or his lambo!!!!! the lyrics are average..so this is nowhere a 5..
the only album that warrants a 5 this year. (or near to it)..is nas' aite?!! |

I think a lot of you guys are buggin. If u expected to listen to a jeezy album and get a collection of hip hop quoteables u fooled yourself. This album does what it's supposed to do banging beats, catchy hooks and music to hustle to. Don't know you, put on, crazy world, circulate, amazin' and welcome back are all stand out tracks to me. This is definetely the hottest album out right now and knocks the carter 3 out the water.

For those of you who call this a classic, I think you really outta rethink that. Classic isn't something that drops every year, it may not be every two years, but when it is a classic its something special. Now I'm not hatin on Jeezy at all, but I really don't see this as a classic. In fact, I was pretty disappointed in the effort, it has some bangers that flow in the beginning, but it begins to get into mediocre tracks. As donjonjon said, some trimming to the album would help, since there is filler evident. "Put On" was a banger, "Crazy World" works well, but other tracks become tiresome. If you like to bump this is for you, but Jeezy lyrically isn't too much better, he adds a touch of politics and some better beats that knock, but it isn't a classic. Better than his second album, which was more commercialized, but a decent album overall.

Jeezy is the best thing in the south right now this aint better than thug motivation but if damn sure tops the inspiration he has no lyrics but his beatz are the best but one? 4 Nathan how can u not @*#$! wit my president is black like lets b real what did u expect jeezy to say it kinda cliche to hear jeezy say my lambos blue nd ill b got damned if my rims aint to but lets me past the hook the second verse stuntin on martin luther feelin juss like a king i guess this is what he ment when he said that he had a dream wat..and if anything nas was make she not a politican mommys a pole-itician...can u say corny...but i cant fake i cant stand that vacation song but 4 da most part this is what i expected from jeezy its not bad its a certified banger man

in my opinion -the recession- goes neck-n-neck with thug motivation 101. their both classic (jeezy) albums. P.S (for those of you who like this album) listen to the bonus track DONE-IT-ALL this song makes the album CLASSIC

nice review. you hit it right on the head. I would have been pretty outraged if this got anything higher than a 3. Every song was pretty much the same. Vacation is kinda catchy and funny in a way. And you know it'll get stuck in your head. Put On was a miserable track that he dragged Yeezy into. Im sick of the autotuner. I used to love Jeezy and i still think his old stuff is pretty G, but I feel like he thinks he's bigger than he is. He needs to put a way better effort into it if he wants to compete with Lil' Wayne and T.I. for king of the south. And i still cant believe Nas did a song with him.

Okay, first of all, the review was good, but i disagree. I think the album is very, very good. Jeezy is one of the most charismatic rappers in the game. His voice is perfect for hip hop. That alone should boost the score in some form, because he really makes music that nobody else can. Nobody has such an awesome voice. The album bangs. Not a classic hip hop album, but a classic trap rap album. Excellently done, very enjoyable to listen to. Banging beats with the lyrics jeezy is known for. Highly recommended.
Tha Carter III Untitled- Nas L.A.X.- Game The Recession- Young Jeezy Greatest Story Ever Told- David Banner ^^ top five albums so far this year.... Haven't heard GZA's yet, and RZA's was close to being in there. |

aight ivy...thats not true. I grew up in the streets and I'm in college...so how does that work out??
Lets not get all angry cuz people don't share the same opinions as us. An easy "disagree" does just as much. But I'll say this album was no classic. I rated it a banger because thats what it is. Classics are the few albums that are considered...well classics. But I'll agree with the fact that this album is WAY better then Tha Carter III. |

Yo Dj LP... I agree... Look man I was briught up in da streetz... i done gave dis nigga props personally when he dropped let's get it... I took my street money n went to school... to create a life outside da streets... i just don't appreciate those who haven't spent a single cold night on da block clocking work... tryna down play a man who hustled to get himself right... If you a street nigga n u in school den do dat shit big.. but if u ain't never been in da streets den please have some respect when you choose to criticize another man's work... n Yea i feel this album is better den da carter III n can anybody tell me wtf lil wayne be saying or is he the only artist who can say random sh!t that can be considered real rap??? I bet Pac n Biggy would turn over in their graves if they could hear this dude...

Put it On is a great track, and there are a few others which are good. But overall this album is just a re-hash of Jeezy's previous albums. He basically recycles beats and lyrics on this one.
