Wiz Khalifa is the Jennifer Aniston of hip-hop. Women love Jennifer Aniston because she’s the embodiment of everything they want to be; famous, independent, hot, but not so hot she seems unreachable. At her most optimistic, the average American woman sees herself as Aniston, or at the very least could imagine Aniston as her best friend. What’s more, Aniston knows full well why her fans love her, so she consciously bypasses the summer blockbuster flicks in favor of working-class-girl roles (Office Space, The Break-Up, etc.).
For those checking to make sure this is still the album review for Wiz Khalifa’s major label debut album, Rolling Papers, allow me to connect the dots. Wiz Khalifa has money, but he doesn’t rhyme about G6 jets and Louis Vuitton bags full of diamonds. Wiz Khalifa gets girls, but in his music they aren’t Brazilian super models, they’re chicks he picked up at the club with a nice car. Wiz Khalifa can rap, but not so well everyone with a radio can’t rhyme along to every word, even if they’re higher than Kilimanjaro. There are a lot of rich and famous rappers out there, but Wiz is the only one you can picture eating at a 24-hour IHOP with you.
In other words, Wiz Khalifa feels reachable, and Rolling Papers walks that fine line between projecting our fantasies while maintaining an everyman appeal expertly. If Wiz learned anything from his first failed major label signing, with Warner Brothers, it’s how to balance his well deserved reputation as a “weed rapper” with mainstream appeal. So on his second time around with Atlantic he’s essentially made Rolling Papers a pop album, in the sense that heavily melodic hip-hop is the new pop (see also, Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday). Musically it makes for a pretty unexciting album, but having already earned a massive and chronically loyal fan base (get it?), it’s his best chance at shifting from cultural phenomenon to established icon.
That doesn’t mean Rolling Papers is all sugary sweet pop anthems – it contains a fair share of more straight up rap records. While the instantly addictive beat for his breakthrough smash Black and Yellow was notably crafted by pop/r&b super-producers Stargate, Wiz’ simple but strong rhymes, anthemic hook and rep your city swagger has its roots in hip-hop. While it’s hard to deny Black and Yellow’s appeal, it’s On My Level, not so coincidentally the most purely rap song on Rolling Papers, that’s my personal favorite on the album. Khalifa’s constantly relaxed delivery and basic verses echo Jim Jonsin’s minimalistically banging beat perfectly. Tellingly, On My Level also includes one of only three guest verses on the album in Too Short, along with Curren$y on the more rap-esque Rooftops. For better or worse, Rolling Papers is clearly Wiz’ show.
From there the album fluctuates between straight pop and hip-pop, relying more on sung choruses and melodic riffs than beats and rhymes to carry the day. Rolling Papers’ current single, Roll Up, takes the “if your man ain’t treating you right, girl I will” formula that’s hit since the days of doo-wop, brings in some synths and a full-on sung chorus and. It’s not groundbreaking, but if ladies hear it and imagine Wiz rolling to pick them up, it’s a win for Khalifa. Roll Up is actually far from the album’s lightest track, that honor would belong to Fly Solo, an acoustically driven track that doesn’t technically credit Bruno Mars and Travie McCoy’s Billionaire as a source, but should. From there the bulk of the album is simply mid-tempo records that deal with girls, partying, partying with girls, breaking up with your girlfriend so you can party with girls, and any other variation on that theme you can think of. MBDTF this isn’t.
After Rolling Papers Wiz’ fan base should expand significantly, as should the number of rap purists angry about his lack of rhyme skills, but complaining about his “rap” skills completely misses the point. Jennifer Aniston’s never going to win an Oscar for her brave portrayal of a Holocaust survivor, and Wiz is never going to pick up a Grammy for a deeply conceptual album. Wiz Khalifa has emerged from the ranks of replaceable rappers (seriously, anyone could have done Say Yeah) precisely because he’s used his music as a vehicle to project a lifestyle full of relaxation, women and quasi-illegal narcotics, and in that sense Rolling Papers is simply the biggest projector he’s has yet. He just has to be careful not to get so big he becomes unreachable - call it the Jennifer Aniston principle.

Totally enjoying this album. For the most part, I feel that Wiz Khalifa made a good decision to stick to the subject matter that he knows. As a result, it's pretty much a slightly more pop-sounding version of the music he's already been making. Sort of a good way to possibly bring in new fans without alienating too many longtime Wiz followers. I've been following Wiz on and off since he came out with "Say Yeah", so it's good to see that this dude is finally gettin some big-time shine since he's been on it for a while. "Black and Yellow" was a HUGE track, probably one of my personal favorite songs ever. "Roll Up" will hopefully continue in the direction it's going, too. What I like most about Wiz in this cd is his flow and delivery. He's able to switch up his flow midway through verses, while at the same time maintaining the laid back vibe of the song. It's pretty cool because he does it on a way that no one else does.
Favorite Track: Black and Yellow, Roll Up, When I'm Gone, The Race, Star of the Show |

Though the album, is admittedly annoyingly mainstream one cannot deny Khalifa's undeniable charisma. The tracks are honestly melodic despite the limited subject matter. This guy is doing well and will definitely do better years to come.
The Race Roll Up Star of the Show Hopes and Dreams and probably the catchiest song ever made BLACK AND YELLOW Album was a pretty good debut Atlantic should be giggling and sh*t right now. Young Snoop still 4 stars |

After having Pharoahe Monch on blast for the past two weeks, who just dropped a true hip hop classic, there is no way I can rate this higher than two stars.
He already made this album its called Deal or No deal (a much better version). Not to mention he can't rap for shit. He gets one star for his energy, at least he's enthusiastic. |

Surprised you didn't once mention The Race considering it is the best song on the album...
Nice review though, well done. |

After black and yellow and on my level for the feel good factor, The race is easily the best and most meaningful song on this

I'm sorry but this is a complete sellout album to me. It has a few good tracks but overall when you compare it to his other releases it simply can not compare.

Solid mainstream debut; it appeals to many in the pop audience, and loving the triple entendre to its name. Reception seems really polarized; the post-B&Y fans loving this, while the older hardcore Taylors criticising their unfamiliarity with his crossover into the mainstream appeal.
Yeah, loving "The Race"; hypnotic beat, a dope singalong chorus (bad pun); gotta acquire that instru... probably one of my favourites in the album. As much as I hate to say it, I'm really digging his current singles out there (as well as the potential tracks to become singles); I just want to get their choruses out of my head right now... |

I've always been a big Wiz Khalifa fan way before Kush and Orange Juice and I have to say that this album was a little mainstream. I do enjoy mainstream pop Wiz (I've been bumpin' "No Sleep", "Roll Up", and can surprisingly still tolerate Black and Yellow every now and then) but at the same time I miss that old Wiz that we got from his mixtapes. I feel like he only gave us a taste of that on this album. Then again maybe that's what makes him a great artist: he has mainstream appeal as well as die hard underground fans. That being said, this is a good album but I'm still anxious for his next mixtape. Till then its still TGOD.
Favorite tracks: Rooftops, When I'm Gone, Get Your Shit, On My Level, and No Sleep. |

The one thing is you cant expect Kush and OJ again or even B.A.R. this is exactly what Wiz wanted if you compare it to great albums as far as lyricism this is a one star but if you look at how many albums its gonna sell and how much your gonna like its a 4 star its a great mainstream album

I am a huge Wiz Khalifa fan. But I was really dissapointed with this album. It is sell out album. There is a couple of good songs on it like The Race is by far the best song.

The album's OK, definitely for the mainstream, which is cool, because he has givin' away more than enough free music, but made up mostly of tracks that most Wiz fans are already familiar with.

This album is definitely a banger. Every track is unique in its own way. He didn't sell out, he had to go mainstream. Not many people can get rich and talk about smoking all day. He didn't make this album for the fans, he made it for people who don't know wiz. Now everyone knows wiz.

Hey guys, I'm new here and am excited to share my thoughts on different songs and albums. I always love reading Nathan's reviews and DJBooth is the site I always go to first to see the latest releases.
But also I'm trying to spread the word about my own blog that I started a couple months back. Now, I am absolutely not at all trying to steal any of Nathan S.'s thunder; his reviews have been the best I've ever read. I'm just a college student that loves hip-hop and just like to share my thoughts on songs and albums with everyone. the websites: http://creightonscritique.blogspot.com/ Any way, as much of a Wiz fan I am, I wasn't really feeling the album that much, it was average at best. Finally, sorry for such the large comment. |

This album is better than what people are giving it credit for. I really hate when people hate on people or artist because they change their style up. Then if they start to sound the same in all their songs then you complaining that he needs to switch it up.
When creating an album you want to compile some of your best work at that time in you are in. Not everyday is the same therefore you have a different mix of emotions everyday, meaning you are going to come up with different outcomes. He took all those different outcomes, picked the best ones he felt represented the best, and created a masterpiece in his eyes. Regardless if you don't like this album then you don't have to listen to it. The thing about it is that millions of others will and he wont loose no sleep that he lost one fan cause he gain many more. So to me it was a very solid album to me and i give him props for not giving a damn. |

I have no idea why, but i really like Wiz Khalifa. I usually hate rappers like him, but I listen to his music all the time, and even when he drops a pop album...i still like it. Maybe it is because he does feel reachable, but i dont know. Whatever it is, he should keep doing what hes doing. It works.

I think we need a like button on here lol. I have to agree with Dj Syke. A true artiste is able to change his style, and re invent himself. Being able to explore other genres in my opinion shows talent. Going mainstream isn't a bad thing because I would want to expand my audience if I was him. Furthermore, the first single I heard him drop "say yeah" isn't very different from most of the tracks on the album so i dont see how he "sold out" when he has been doing that style for a while. The album is well produced and its good music.

Ever heard the saying: "it's not what you say, it's how you say it?"
Well, I believe that applies with this album and Wiz in general. The Pitt native isn't a lyrical genius--anyone would admit that--but his rap style has a certain something that differentiates itself from those of other artists. If I can describe it in one word: VIBE. Wiz's music has a very distinguishable vibe to it, and part of that involves his flow, delivery, and his voice. I don't care what anyone says--an artist can rap his ass off, but if his voice is wack, or not distinguishable in some way then his/her's music suffers. What if Jay-Z had a voice like pee-wee herman's?" His rhymes would still be dope but I doubt anyone would listen to him. It's an extreme example but hopefully you get the point. It's hard to measure things like vibe, swag, and flow, but I think it definitely should factor into an evaluation of an artist. Nathan is a great music reviewer--my favorite on the internet, actually--but sometimes he misses this (take Kid Cudi, for example-- http://bit.ly/13kD5W). To not even mention "The Race," which like many reviewers pointed out, is the best on the album, makes me wonder if he even listened to the entire disk. 4 stars ------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Very good album!!!!! It is mainstream-ish, but I still love it! Favorite tracks are: Black & Yellow, Cameras, No Sleep, When I'm Gone, The Race, Roll Up, Rooftops and On My Level. In my opinion, When I'm Gone and Cameras are the best songs on the album, the piano is nice and Wiz delivers in When I'm Gone and Cameras is a very inspirational song, it tells about the status about Wiz right now, his rise to fame in the rap game.

I really dont know where Wiz came from, but this album knocked me off my feet. Black and Yellow went crazy, and has more remixes than any song i can think of since Lollipop. My favorite song by far is On my Level. nasty beat, good flow, and it doesnt get old after a couple listens. He has such a mellow vibe, works well with others, and is a great addition to the new Stoner sub-genre. That said, it is hard to listen to the album straight through, because his sound doesnt vary a ton.

Rolling Papers has gotten a lot of criticism for its pop style and that wiz only spits about weed, cliquot, money and girls. Well, thats all he knows and Im glad he sticks to his bread and butter. All great songs to vibe to and I think it is finally great for him to come out with a complete album where he can tell his story. Really liked it.

general vibe is relaxing and suits summer evenings with your friends perfectly. pot and potheads just bring people together, I guess:) 3.5 |
