Ok, people. Let’s all take a deep breath. Wale’s a rapper, not the second coming of Christ. After dropping a few highly heralded mixtapes, playing the MTV Video Music Awards and being publicly lauded by everyone from Mark Ronson to Jay-Z, I know it seems like Wale’s been part of hip-hop’s elite circle for years, but he’s still only in the beginning stages of what promises to be a long career. In truth, in just three short years Wale has catapulted from being just another rapper trying to make it in Washington D.C.’s chronically overlooked scene to hip-hop’s supposed savior – though what he was supposed to save us from is unclear – and that’s an absurd amount of hype to heap upon the shoulders of a man who had yet to release an album. So before we go any further, let’s take a moment to appreciate how far Wale has come.
I wrote all that not to bring Wale down, but to preemptively strike against anyone who listens to Wale’s long-awaited debut album Attention Deficit and declares they’re disappointed. Yes, if you were expecting a classic album, the modern era’s greatest display of hip-hop mastery, than Attention Deficit will fall well short of your lofty expectations. So how about instead we all be f*king reasonable for once? This is only Wale’s rookie season, and like any talented and highly drafted rookie he has a way to go before he learns the ins and outs of the professional game, but there’s no hiding talent, and Wale’s crafted Attention Deficit to ensure his skill cannot and will not be ignored.
To quote Emilio Rojas, it’s a bold and arrogant move to start your debut album with a song titled Triumph, but I admire Wale’s confidence, and more importantly he backs up the track’s boast with the kind of flow that first garnered him attention, seamlessly combining fearlessness (“F**k the camaraderie with B-rate artists”), oh s**t punchlines (“Michael Vick, if y’all bark, y’all through”) and pop culture references (“you a slum dog, I’m a millionaire”). It’s a statement track, and a great choice to lead off the album. Much more conducive to dancing but no less lyrically astute is Mirrors, a track whose production has Mark Ronson’s organic, retro-soul fingerprints all over it. Here Wale proves he can switch up his cadence, all the better to flow over Mirror’s oscillating beat, and Bun B provides a dope bass counterbalance to Wale’s baritone voice. Throw in World Tour, a head-nodding, quasi-Tribe Called Quest tribute featuring Jazmine Sullivan, and you’ve got a telling microcosm of Attention Deficit, an album that Wale’s brave enough to let sonically wander but strong enough to keep tied together.
Attention Deficit doesn’t contain mistakes as much as it contains compromises, compromises that a more established and experience rapper than Wale would have been able to avoid. I think we all know that I’m talking about Pretty Girls, the album’s most blatant attempt at wooing radio programmers; what other reason could there be to include Gucci Mane? Real talk: Wale only has three rap features on his album, and Gucci Mane is one of them? Really? That move’s got commercial compromise written all over it. The inclusion of Lady Gaga on Chillin isn’t quite as blatant, at least she’s a boundary pushing artist in her own right, but here she only does a lazy M.I.A. impression, and more tellingly Wale noticeably dumbs down his flow on Chillin for the album’s most forgettable verses. The most successful merger of national appeal with Wale’s distinctively local style is Let It Loose, a Neptunes produced track that’s Attention Deficit’s sacrifical offering to the clubs, but it ultimately feels more like a Pharrell joint than a Wale track. He’s just not artistically strong enough to own a track like Let It Loose…yet.
So Attention Deficit isn’t a perfect album? So what? To focus on its valleys would be to miss its tremendous peaks. Impressively Wale covers a lot of musical ground, most notably TV in the Radio, a cut that brings on K’Naan and producer Dave Sitek (fittingly of the band TV on the Radio) for a gripping original anthem; Shades, a soulful exploration of black-on-black racism with Chrisette Michelle and Diary, a stunning cut featuring Marsha Ambrosius. If you were expecting Wale to be a true game changer, these are the tracks that will give you hope, the tracks that will ensure the hype surrounding his next album will be almost impossibly huge. After Attention Deficit, I wouldn’t be surprised if Wale eventually exceeds all our expectations.

I thought pretty much every track was refreshing. Chillin and Pretty Girls stay in my head all day. In fact, Chillin was the only track I heard by Wale before this album, so I wasn't sure what to expect. So no disappointments from me.

It will be interesting to see what Wale can do when he matures. This album was surprisingly mature however but with sore spots including "mirrors" and "let it loose". I'm sorry but I just don't think wale sounds good on a club track. Nathan your review was spot on but I'm surprise you didn't mention the Rihanna sampled "contemplate". Wale's flow on this track was incredible to me. Otherwise this is a solid debut from a very good rapper.

Excuss me if i express this as a little inconsiderate but i have to this album was incredible, not just sicing Wale's hype or expressing him as the next industry dominator, but i just have to say this classic established itself as just the Real
from the struggles given by the "Diary" and "Contemplate" to the radio jumping "let it losse" and "Chillen" this album was set as the new standard of hiphop poetry |

If Ice and Rain, the Letter, Family Affair were on this album it would have been so much closer to a classic disc. Nonetheless, Attention Deficit is good, no great, and Wale is the future.

The beginning and end of this album are phenomenal. The middle, however, is not as enjoyable. I don't like artists who try to do songs that are not their strength and that is Wale's pitfall with songs like "Let It Loose" and "90210." With that said, the great outweighs the mediocre and songs like "TV in the Radio," "Mirrors," and "Diary" are amazing. Repeat-worthy!
Favorite Song: Beautiful Bliss. |

I was dying for this album this year! Wale's kicked down the doors once barring his entry into the radio and your TV set.
Top Six; "Diary", "Prescription", "Shades", "Mirrors", "TV in the Radio" and "Beautiful Bliss". Overall a great album, but I do have to agree with Z. Songs like "Let It Loose" just sounded so out of place. In the end, this album shows us how we can keep our trust in Wale. Sure, he's had those two radio singles, and will probably use the more radio-appealing tracks, but listening to the actual album itself, you can still hear good ol' Wale. He isn't going anywhere. Also, first rating in a while, how'd that happen? lol Great review, Nathan. "...an album that Wale’s brave enough to let sonically wander but strong enough to keep tied together." Perfect. |

As much as I'd hate to admit it, Gucci's verse was a great addiction to Pretty Girls. I prefer it to the original version that was on the Booth a while back.
This album i have listened to 5 times today. Its not a classic, but you guys only got 5 stars -.- I'd give it a 9/10, which is better than a 4/5 |

Since Nike Boots and Back In The Go-Go came out i was really looking forward to Wale Coming Through for DC. He has done just that! Hes been all over the place and putting out great songs with great artists. Hes a fresh new breath of air for the hip-hop/rap scene as well. I couldnt be happier with his first album and I was very impressed with it. Its also nice that alot of tracks have Go-Go styling/beats to them which is really reppin partof the DC scene. 5 stars for a great album and Goin Hard for DC. DC STAND UP! Excellent work Wale.

I have supported Wale since 1000 miles and runnin mixtape. He is somebody i was wondering when he was gona put an album out.....and it finally arrived!!! This album sticks to what he does best! He is really clever with his flow and every song he comes hard! Even the song with Gucci, Gucci actually lays down a mediocre verse, I guess he didnt want to get slaughtered by the wordplay of Wale. Anyways Chillin is still one of the best songs on the album so catchy and surprisingly probably some of his worst lines on the album, however he has got such a great album, TV in the Radio is soo good, gotta love K'naan reppin Canada!! This album is def a great performance showing that the man from DC is gona be here for a bit, I say that his next album will be his breakthrough album, and critics will say, "What sophomore slump?" Wale "Dude is Sick!" Classic Album.

Nice new face for hip hop that's putting D.C. on the map which is cool. He's got some nice punchlines and humor, shows versatility on a number of tracks. Look forward to hearing more, solid debut.

During a time of commercial hip hop, and a lot of artists losing their creative appeal. An album like this means alot...easily one of the best this year. Every track was hot in my opinion. Gotta say the J.Cole,Knaan and Bun B was a great addtion to the album and definitely a five star album. Keep it up Wale!!!
