Somehow I had convinced myself The Game would be the one to deliver the classic album Los Angeles has been waiting for. The album that will resurrect the days when Dre’s beats and Pac’s rhymes were bumping out of every car in the city, from the Bentleys of Beverly Hills to the Impalas of Inglewood. True, Game was far from a great rapper (sometimes very far) but against all odds he had already released two dope albums – his shattering debut The Documentary and the surprisingly ill Doctor’s Advocate – and it wasn’t crazy to think he could shock the world with a legendary album. I thought I saw a glint in his tattooed eye that said he would settle for nothing less than greatness, and since L.A.X. is reportedly his last album, I thought this would be the one. I thought wrong.
Now before Game supporters start plotting to smash my car when they see it, let me explain. If for no other reason than the brute force of Game’s musical strength, L.A.X. is damn good, but it’s not the album the west coast’s been waiting for. Not that he had to be all Cali all the time, the man does have a worldwide audience, but consider this: while his heroes N.W.A. named their classic album Straight Outta Compton, Game named his after the city’s biggest airport, a place full of arrivals and departures. Or did I just blow your f**king mind?
In order to understand L.A.X., you have to understand Game as an MC. Though his lyricism has improved, his wordplay is still elementary compared to rap’s best (see his track with Luda, Ya Heard, for proof), and the man switches tempo about as often as Fat Joe exercises. Finesse is not his thing. Instead, Game has two modes, hard and harder, and his blunt force style is in full effect during State of Emergency, his historic collaboration with Ice Cube. Disappointingly, Cube only appears on the chorus, but Game more than gets the job done on his own. How do you know when someone’s a truly hard rapper? When they rhyme “motherf**ker” with “motherf**ker” - as Game does - and it still sounds good. By far the hardest song of the album is Dope Boys, a jackhammer of a track that brings in punk-rock drummer turned hip-hop infiltrator Travis Barker. On Dope Boys Game unleashes his adrenaline-soaked voice in all its fury. This is warrior music, and at times L.A.X. is as strapped for war as a marine driving a tank through Baghdad.
If L.A.X. is remembered for anything, it probably won’t be the bangers, it will be for the plethora of r&b singers. Nowhere does this balance strike more perfectly than on Game’s Pain, the album’s lead single. Keyshia Cole’s convincingly taken over as the best street singer in the game, and she does another stellar job on Pain. For his part Game takes his usual name-dropping tendencies to a whole new level, but he also manages to relax his style just enough to make a truly feel-good joint. As strange as it may seem, I would even include My Life, Game’s track with Weezy, in this category, with Wayne playing the role of the heartbroken singer (thanks to the vocal assistance of ol’ autotuner). This is the Game that first got everyone’s attention, the Game who dropped Dreams, the Game who’s not afraid to wonder why he’s still alive while his friends died.
Now that I mention it, go back and listen to Dreams and then tell me L.A.X. isn’t Game’s weakest album to date. You can’t. The underdog storyline that made The Documentary so compelling is gone, largely replaced with constant references to his Phantom. Instead of Dreams we get Gentlemen’s Affair, an unfortunately misguided track with Ne-Yo, and instead of One Blood we get Cali Sunshine, a track that could have been a great summertime jam if Game hadn’t insisted on constant gun references. The closest L.A.X. comes to such hip-hop granduer is Angel, his track with Kanye and Common, and Letter to the King, a MLK tribute with Nas, but more than anything these tracks prove that despite his constant insistence, he’s not one of top three rappers in the game, he’s not even one of the top three rappers on his own album. He is, however, one of the biggest rappers in the game, and the day Game realizes the difference between those two things is the day he makes a classic album.

Nathan..you got this review ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.! I am a hug g-unit fan, but i also love game, and even i was waiting for a classic. I Heard "game's Pain", and i instantly thought classic. I listened to the whole album over the last couple days. and the best tracks for me were state of emergency, games pain, and letter to the king (which should have been one of nathans pics!!)..I listen to the documentary nearly every week, and its like a classic debut..sure he cant really carry an album on his own..but comparing docemtary to l.a.x. is like comparing illmatic (even though thats in a league of its own) to hip hop is dead, Both great albums, but you know which ine is better. In my opinion he was better with 50 and the unit. And terminate On Sight was a better album than this.(my opinion)..his lyrics are not on the level of Lloyd Banks..speakin of which..DJ Booth Banks has released about 10 freestyles over the last month..you should put some on there..there crazy

Yes this was a good album. This was expected from a good rapper like the Game. He's been putting in work for the west coast, but as an album still comes up short of his potential. I feel he has the talent to be up there with Jay-z, Nas, Kanye, and Wayne. This album is good, so don't get me wrong im not bashing, but its pretty much what I expected. If you ask me, I would buy both Raw Footage AND L.A.X especially if you live in the west coast. WESTSIDE.

It's not that this wasn't a good album. Everybody just thought that it would be amazing. All you really had to do was listen to some of the singles. I mean, come on. The only good song off this album is "My Life", which by now is getting really old. Most people thought that this was the "Album of the year". Sorry guys, but I told you so.

im a little dissapointed with the review of this album this is a great album and i see it as the one of the best albums of the year it's not as good as doctors advocate production wise but it's better then the documentary. LAX is a great album. Game deliver everytime on this album, and he outshine Luda on ya heard as well as common on angel two traxcs thats fire. the traxc with nas crazy, and cube didn't need a verse on state of emergency Game came hard on that. it's crazy how everybody jump'd on wayne bandwagon he drop a coo club album with no real music on it lyrics all over the place and game come with a lyrical album that may not get reconize now but like reasonable doubt someone will look baxc and see how great of a album it is or was or hopefully we get baxc to real music and see how great it is now.

This is a really good album. Unlike Tha Carter 3, this album flows together really nicely, it's all straight west coast music that bangs hard. Songs like "My Life," "Money," and "Bulletproof Diaries" make this album worth buying. I don't really think it had a TON of hype, therefore I'd say it exceeded expectations. He is easily top 5 in the game right now and I bet somewhere 50 is shaking his head.

Unlike plenty of other sites around the net (who shall remain nameless), DJBooth doesn't ride the d*ck of our industry friends. Just because its a highly-anticipated release, and Game has popped off a few catchy singles, does not mean that Nathan automatically throws up a 5-star review. The production on this album is great; I was impressed with almost every beat I heard. As for Game... whats with all the damn guest features? Did my man Khaled A&R this project? I think a little more Game, a little less (FILL IN THE BLANK) would have made this project more impressive. Like Nathan said, this is not Game's best. It isn't even his second best. (But, with all that said, it is still better than 80% of what is being churned out today).

How has this album not got CLASSIC, or NEAR- Classic rating...it is simply the best album of the year..better than the carter III and better than Nas's new album...real talk..
Best songs- Lax files, state of emergency, Let us live, never can say goodbye & touchdown... Real games fans dont let that bad review mislead you! This album is a classic, and has certified game's name into hip-hop hall of fame! |

DJ Z is right..Although it is better than what most people put out these days it is not even close to what we expected from the Game. I have been waiting for this album for a long time as Game has been one of my favorite artists since the documentary. It was a disappointment. It is not a bad album but I expected greatness from the game.

At my first listen i agreed with Nathans review but I've listened to this album about 5 times now and im starting to feel it alot. I wasnt feeling Doctors Advocate @ first either so first listens dont mean anything for me. I dont think its the classic we've been waiting for but i definitely think its a very solid album. On the same level as Tha Carter III. I dont think this is the album Game expected to make that's why he said he gonna do another album. lol And actually Gentleman's Affair is one of my favorite songs on the album next to Angel.

wow i'm surprized with this review but at the same time it dosn't shock me it is the game, most of his singles were hits i thought he was finnally maturing into a bigger greater artist but he needs to get off the name dropping he's not getting anywhere with it clearly. I guess now we just wait for the RECSSION and better then that PAPER TRAIL!!!

I agree 100% with this review. Right on point. I also had high expectations for this album but its his weakest one to date. Game name drops soo much which is getting really annoying now. How many times can you say Dr.Dre, Kanye West, Kobe, Lebron before it gets annoying?

Okay album. Definitely not a classic by any means. pop3y3, ur opinion became irrelevant to me the second I read "game out-shined Luda on ya heard". Luda tore that track to pieces, Game came out with the same thing he's been coming out with for years. Anyways, this album was just okay, didn't live up to my expectations in any means; The Documentary is still Game's best album if you asked me. Game is far from a bad rapper, but he needs to work on his content. I've never heard someone name drop as much as him. If he's not name-dropping other rappers he's talking about being hard, his car, or how he can kill you if you f*** with him. He needs to step his game up. My favorite tracks have got to be: State of Emergency, LAX Files, My Life and Dope Boys. Hopefully this is not the Game's last album, he's got a lot of potential, his album just doesn't show that. BEST ALBUM OF 2008 THUS FAR: Untitled by Nas

L.A.X isn't better than The Documentery, but it's better than alot of other albums that are being released thses days. There's alot of great songs on this album, like "My Life," "Dope Boys," "Game's Pain," "Money," "State of Emergency," "Letter To The King," "House of Pain," LAX Files," Bulletproof Diaries," & Touchdown. I downloaded this album a couple of weeks ago, and have been bangin it in my car nonstop. But I'm definately going to Best Buy later today to get L.A.X.

I think this album is a clear cross between Documentary and Doctor's Advocate; think of it like a vin diagram or something. "Cali Sunshine" could've been dope, but he wasted his time ranting about the Top 10. "Gentlemen's Affair" was a waste of a spot, that's all I'm gonna say about that song. "Bulletproof Diaries", "Ya Heard" and "Angel", Game gets put on a hotspot next to more stars who for the most part shine brighter than him, but I don't exactly think steal the show. Maybe Ludacris in "Ya Heard" does, but Game does hold some ground next to Common in "Angel", even if his verses weren't as good as his opening one. (Just want to throw in here; Angel is a dope song, especially the chorus- just really like that). "Money" is actually one of the album's strongest tracks, and it's just hiim by himself, with a strong production. Same goes for "State of Emergency", just that has Cube on the chorus (kinda shame). "L.A.X. Files" was nice, but maybe it's just me, but he could've done something more with that track. It had just a little something missing. "Letter to the King" is a track on a whole 'nother level, with two incredible last verses (one by Nas, then it's wrapped up by Game himself), but that too had something missing from it. "Never Can Say Goodbye" is pretty interesting, and I think Game deserves props for attempting that. "My Life" is easily one of the best tracks, and it's NOT because of Lil Wayne, which is good, though Lil Wayne does pretty much ace the chorus... as much as a rapper on a vocoder can ace a chorus. Now, I wonder if this will be his last album or not, since I think Game said Dr. Dre isn't going to work with him again, and that may but D.O.C. away.

Hey Nate, I thought LAX stood for Los Angeles Times? I don't know, I think I read it somewhere. Otherwise, I thought that the album was pretty solid. Definitely not his best. It's like that becoz it's The Game we're talking about here. We know what he's capable of and so we set a huge standard up for him. Compared to the 2 former albums this is weak. In light of progression, maybe this is where Game's at right now. I'll stick with the albums that have the letters DOC in them. Hey, keep it up DJ Booth you guys are still killin it!

Wait, no one mentioned "Let Us Live" (I think), so I forgot about that, but I thought that "Let Us Live" was a solid track, and that both artists did very nicely on that. Game's verses sounded a bit Nas-ish in some spots, which isn't bad.

Nathan- I usually agree with your reviews, but you make alot of statements with out really backing them up. There is no way that you can claim that this is Game's worst album. You start off by saying you want more 'banging' , but then complain about gun references. Make up your mind. Game is much more mature in this album. Showing people he can rap about Money and Life...because he's lived it. Yea Z he has alot of feature artists, because that's who he is as a person and every rapper out there wants a piece of the best rapper in the game. cus "every rap metaphor ends in his name" i don't really care what other people give this album as a rating, because everyone has their own personal touch. He needed to break away from Dre. and not live in his shadow. Booth gives this 3.5 but you give American Gangster and Untitled great ratings. Because they are established rappers. It's good that we're hard on the modern players. but when can you stop and look back and realize that he just came out with an album similar to any old cube, ice t joint. It's old school mixed with the new. flow like HOV, metaphors like Weezy and ideas like Pac. this is a raw album that anyone can enjoy. Maybe try going back and listening to this album and remember that this is still the game that doesn't give a shit about anyone and will still fill your body with a desert ease clip.

Nathan, good review man. Agree to almost everythin. L.A.X. is the year's second best album, behind Nas of course. Game is the hardest rapper out right know, but that doesnt mean it will translate into classic hits. Ice Cube sounds tight on "State of Emergency" but I would of loved to hear him spit a verse. I've been listenin to "My Life" for about 3 weeks and haven't got sick of it. But that song was outshined by "Letter to the King" That song is nuts...never was a true Nas fan till his recent album and this song solidified it. Game, I'm still waitin for a west coast classic.

nahhh Nate, i cant rock wit that 3.5, i'd definitely give it a 4. couple reasons Gentlemen's Affair is by far a better girl song than "Special" was on The Documentary, LAX Files is an intense and dark song, and so is "house Of pain". Not only that, but how can u review this album and NEGLECT to mention "Never Can Say Goodbye", where he raps thru the eyes of Pac, Big, and Eazy E, in the moments before their death? an album with that song on it can NOT receive a 3.5. its my opinion but i think I am agreed with. I thought the Game really worked hard on this album and i think he may be one of the most under-APPRECIATED artists in the industry.

IF YOU ARE ANYWAY AFFILIATED WITH DJ BOOTH THAN PLEASE READ.
I've been waiting for this album for about five months now and its finally here, God damn i'm impressed. As for my man Dj Z and Nathan and any other writers what are you thinking. You guys review less established, newer, controversial emcees a lot harder than people like jay-z as my man lzfreshtadeath stated, when jay-z's album was average at best. If Dre released an acoustic soul album you'd give it 5 stars based on his respect in the hip hop community. The production was way better, he collaborated with people that game usually wouldn't collab with like raekwon, ludacris, and common. Also, when the game shows his lyrical ability, to me he showed a whole new side. But the public wants bangers when this man gives a gold and all you do is talk all that stuff because its not a game album, with heavy beats followed by even heavier lyrics. It's sad that when game shows his versatility and you shun it. Next time you review something dont set these high expectations and judge it for what it is. This album is classic, only time will tell. |

I said that i wouldnt buy this CD and this is all because i didnt find Game's Pain really a Game song. But I did go buy the album. And I now know that Game, for this album, took a different approach than his other albums. He took a more radio friendly approach, and putting more Rnb artists on there, and making sure he gets his share of radio. I have to say that he did a great job at doing that. Ino everybody compared this CD to Cube's and that just ain't fare to Game. He took a different approach and i bought Cube's and his was awesome, and Game's is good to but not a classic. I still find that The Documentary was his best album. That saying i just added my 3rd Game CD and its different than normal Game but its still a banger

This is honestly quite sad. You guys are taking this album and turning it into something it isn't. The album is dope, but it's not what you guys are calling it. You're bringing up Nas & Jay-Z to the table saying that those albums were "average at best" without even thinking that people don't share the same opinion as you all the time AND if you actually gave the albums you're bringing up a listen with both ears and a cleared mind thinking only about the music and not The Game and how you think his album is 10x better, aka the hater's state of mind. Someone mentioned Nathan never brought up "Never Can Say Goodbye", but there's only so much he can cover AND he already put it down as his second favourite song (or that's how I think those sub-headings worked). What's going on here is everyone who's bashing Nathan & Z is stuck in a fan boy mode. I love Game as much as you do, but even I know that you can't completely shit on a (great) reviewer for opening up the album ways a fan boy can't. You have to open your horizon and embrasse the music for more than just "fire" or "hot sh*t" dropped by your favourite rapper, and listen to it as music, not who it's by, but just listen to the music. Otherwise, in the state people are taking this, it's just classic or failure. Also, justs a few more things... Weezy doesn't use metaphors, he uses similies, which kinda takes down from his own art. " He needed to break away from Dre. and not live in his shadow." THAT'S an accomplishment, and something I do agree Game's done well. "I guess according to Nathans ratings Terminate On Sight is just as good as L.A.X..... hmmmmm something doesnt seem right... d u agree?!?!?" No. Again, I repeat the hater thing. "an album with that song on it can NOT receive a 3.5" One song doesn't make classic albums, sadly. If they did, we'd have a lot of classics. Though I do agree having a lot of heavyweights for guest features shouldn't and didn't entirely take away from Game's game (wtflol), you still can't stick to a hater/fan boy mind set and run with it.

First of all, I'd like to point out how GREAT this thread is. The feedback --good, bad and everything in-between-- is exactly why DJBooth has grown into the site it is... so keep it up, everyone. With that said, I spoke with Game about this album roughly 7 weeks before it dropped. Though he wouldn't refer to his own work as classic, he said that it would speak for itself. Frankly, the best material I heard from the album was released to us before the entire project dropped. On the contrary, each of Game's first two projects possessed hidden jewels, which I did not discover until listening to the entire finished product. If you actually READ the entire review, like it seems most of you have, you'll realize that Nathan applauds the effort (as compared to the industries other artists). But, in comparison to Game's own work, it falls short. Oh, and DJChecka, I really do hope that Dre plans to release an acoustic soul album. Great idea. RIP to his son.

This is the album of the year so far.. and as far as I know.. nothing else is coming out that might challenge that. It's the first album I bought this year on the first day of release. (@*#$! downloading, support your artists) Maybe not so much on this site.. but I've seen a lot of people bashing him for all the featured artists.. but if you listen.. some of the artists are only on the chorus such as Cube and Wayne. Normally an album with that many tracks has a bunch of filler (see Blue Carpet Treatment) but I all I heard was heat from top to bottom.

Look dude, calm down. This is not what Dj Booth is about. Most of us feel that Nathan gave a great review. It is all our own opinion on this cd. Not just yours. So before you open your mouth again...please think. Don't get me wrong, this is a good album, heck a great west coast album, but it just doesn't suit a classic, or even a near classic.

My opinion is that the production is L.A.X.'s weakest point, though high-profile producers were hired, there are hardly a couple of memorable beats on this. On the contrary, I can easily recall each beat from the Advocate. I like that he finally seems to have got over Dre and is moving on. Phantom and Bentley references always existed and will exist on Game's albums, and namedropping also will, but I think that his lyrical talent is way above the previous two, especially the documentary, which relied entirely on hot beats, and not lyricism. BUT I have something to say to Nathan and DJ Z: Before the L.A.X. review, DJBooth was my favorite site for rap, and Nathan and Z my favorite reviwer and interviewer. But, after a couple of nasty comments by Nathan, and especially Z's first comment, they made me reconsider and lose the respect I had for them. It's obvious that, although he gave a fair rating, he is largely biased by the Game's personality, and judges more the man himself than his music. As for Z, REMEMBER that the booth sit on 50's "magic stick" Twice, giving him 3.5's on two horrible albums. And Nathan openly admitted that he wouldn't speak his mind on TOS because he was afraid of 50 harming him or, maybe the site. I understand you gotta be a professional and handle your business strategically, but don't play like you wanna seem tough on somebody who honored you with a great interview and leaked tracks, which means business. I don't think N should rate the album higher, because that's his opinion and it's respectable, but both N and Z should be less bitter. Thats what I think 100%

Wow, I'm with Z, this is a $%#&@!%&* great forum! I love reading people's opinions, but only when they back them up. Everyone here is stating their case and explaining why, it's why we are on top of our shit here at DJBooth! By reading King Kolo's comment just right above me, it caught my attention that this album is rated the same as TOS by G-Unit. While I will say that this album is not a classic by any means, it was hotter than TOS and Game is definetley on another level than G-Unit right now. I think Game passed up on his chance here, by the time another album drops he's going to be losing his touch in my opinion.

Thanks goes to all of those who have both sided with us AND hated on us... kinda makes me feel like a rapper. Normally, by this point in the feedback thread, I would sit to the side and let our amazing members do their thing. But, I have to jump in real quick and make a few things clear. A) Just because an artist gives us an interview exclusive does not mean we automatically will score his album higher. B) How many of you actually went out and BOUGHT this album? C) Name a 'CLASSIC' album with more than 10 guest features. I'm waiting... D) McKriss, Nathan's line about being "afraid of 50 harming him or, maybe the site" was for comedic purposes. It was sarcasm. Ya know, jokes? Again, keep these comments coming. This is great stuff.

who cares if no other classic album had more than 10 guest futures..that doesnt mean anything..that just means that game is changing the recipe of making a classic album..music is music..regardless of who you have on a track with you does not mean that this makes the track worse or less respectable...most of his features are on the hooks anyways..and ive never bought an album before in my life other than the chronic and i will definetly be buying this one..and u cant compare dreams with gentlemans affair because both songs are going into totally different directions..and you shouldnt totally give ratings on an album compared to the artists last one..if the album is dope than give it a good rating..period. In my opinion this is a wack review.

Man I just said that:"I don't think N should rate the album higher, because that's his opinion and it's respectable". If Nathan wants to give it one star too, he should absolutely do it, the same way he gives any rating. Thanks for clarifying that TOS review shit, a couple more comments like this and my respect for you'll be back up. What I intended to say above is that both of you seemed very hyped and, ultimately, disappointed by the final product. So was I. But I also think you could have toned it down a bit. Also, from when do we think of "Dreams" as a good song? It was the first Game song I'd heard and I thought, like, this guy had nothing to say at all. So I'm saying that L.A.X. is lyrically very far ahead from the documentary and competes the advocate in lyricism. And, as many folks have said before me, there is no way that T.O.S. was equal. From what I've seen 'til now, L.A.X. scores vary from 4.5 to 2 on several sites and blogs. So, it's reasonable to say that each one has a diferent view for it. So does Nathan, so does Z, and so do I and everybody. Keep on and maybe next time it will be love. (quote: Ace Boogie)

REPLY: ok so even though i told people to go back and listen to the album again. I did as well. And i agree with Nathan and Z alot more now. Also, try listening to this album in your car. When Graduation came out roughly the same time last year it was in my ride for 4 months. nothing else. this is the same thing. This album makes me love rap again and makes me happy that people like Game are keeping it alive for those of us who dig the mainstream, but can never forget the old.
* Also game really does talk about his phantom waaaay too much. haha. oh, also i have a question for the BOOTH BOYZ. I think that this album is DETOX. what do you think about that. Detox is supposed to drop in 08, being a 7 year span from last album. maybe this is it. Even though Dre had nothing ot do with this album. |

B)WHO ACTUALLY BOUGHT THE ALBUM LISTENED TO IT THOROUGHLY WITHOUT ANY BIASED JUDGEMENT?? C)IS THERE A CERTAIN CRITERIA AS TO HOW MANY OR WHO YOU CAN USE AS YOUR GUEST FEATURES TO MAKE A CLASSIC ALBUM NOW?? D) I HAVE TO QUESTION THE CREDIBILITY OF THE PEOPLE ON HERE WRITING REVIEWS WHEN CLEARLY THEY ARE A BIASED G UNIT FAN WHO WAS MORE SCARED OF 50 HARMING HIM THEN ACTUALLY LISTENING AND GIVING L.A.X A DECENT REVIEW..

I do agree this was better than T.O.S., but T.O.S.'s rating was raised up .5, it was originally just a 3. And I think this album is more of a four, but just nothing more than that. "SO YOU SAY GAME IS FAR FROM A GREAT RAPPER..", that alone shows some people aren't reading this article without chopping it up. You have to look at the picture in a full form, not in the details. "... he’s not one of top three rappers in the game, he’s not even one of the top three rappers on his own album. He is, however, one of the biggest rappers in the game..." And that's true, if you match up his verses against Luda's, Nas', Common's and Raek's. Of course, those guys are almost legendary at this point (and almost all of them ARE). Mistakes came around their way too, and no one is born a genius, everyone grows and learns. And another quote from Nathan... "...just in case you missed it the first time around, don't group me in with The Game haters - I was counting on that man to resurrect west coast rap. He's one of the best in the game..." I'm listening to "Doctor's Advocate" right now (the song), and there's really nothing like it on this album, but it still gives me the feeling that this album is the cut between his two last albums and is right in the middle. I hope Game does well on his sales just to shut up Fifty, and I'm still hoping and wishing for D.O.C. to drop.

There's really nothing to say. Game put his heart and soul into this album. As expressed as you can almost hear him cry in a few of his songs. "Hip hop broke his heart" this album reflects that. Just "Love it or Hate it". not a big deal.
One more thing...hasn't every classic WC album been this controversial? |

Also, you can tell Game wrote this whole album at the same time. Because he uses alot of the same references in different songs. ALSO, IF BIG DREAMS WAS ON THIS ALBUM. I THINK IT MAY HAVE PUSHED IT EVEN FARTHER.

I'm usually in the mood for writing long spiels, but I didn't even do a full review on this album like usual because I just wanted to enjoy it without thinking too critically or analytically about it. The one statement I made on all my blog appearances that I truly stood by is this: "Never Can Say Goodbye" in my opinion is the best track conceptually on the album that was executed grandly by The Game. I also really liked how Kanye West sampled the first Gil Scott Heron song I ever heard back a few years ago called "Angel Dust". That was pretty smooth as well. Overall, I agree it wasn't a classic, and almost even fell off in the banger category. I will simply throw this album in rotation. A few key tracks, most notably the singles "Game's Pain" and "My Life" (plus the favorite "Never Can Say Goodbye) will stand out and I will play them frequently, but this won't become one of my favorite albums by a long shot. That's my 2 cents....and then some. Peace!

LAX is easily one of the best albums of the year.. I actually went out and bought it.. Yea, it had a lot of hype, but overall its a great album that u can play straight through. I dont think its his best, (the documentary was classic, came out of no where and DRE was involved) but I think its pretty close. I love the production and think that its got great variety. FAVORITE TRACK: lax files

q little disappointed with the rating of this song, thought it would be gettin solid 4 all the way, in my eyes its the best album release this year, better then lil wayne's tha carter III where half the songs were good and the other half not so good, better then untitled by nas which was to political for my liking (still good though). so for me, its the album of the year. I will agree that the album could hav been better, but with the deluxe edition, we get the best song he's made since he's debut in big dreams which is probably my favorite rap song of all time, it probably should hav been on the album proper but he decided against it. Hopefully D.O.C. goes ahead cause hip hop & the west coast, needs the game

It was kinda difficult at first, but ultimately I agree with Nathan's rating of the album, even if I do think it's a lil harsh. When it comes down to it, this one is about as good as the other ones. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, I'd put all three of the Game's albums in the 7-8 range. Personally, I like Doctor's Advocate the best, tho. Anyway, its too bad that this one wasn't the West Coast classic that peeps were hopin for. Its also too bad cause to me the best tracks are the songs I've already heard like "Game's Pain," "Big Dreams," and "My Life." Its still a sick CD that I'll ride to prolly about as much as I did wit Doctor's Advocate. I got the Deluxe Edition and the bonus tracks are cool as well. All the songs are pretty cool. It seems like a lot of people are hatin on the songs wit Ne-Yo and Raheem DeVaughn, but I think they're sick. The only songs I can hate on are "Cali Sunshine" and "Ya Heard." They're both hella boring. "Angel" is a sick song and on a side note, Kanye West is startin' to show some real versatility in his production. The beats on his Graduation album are fresh like "Flashing Lights." I can't wait to hear what else's he's comin' out with like the new Jay-Z CD. Back to this album, I also gotta note that it's great to hear Raekwon and the game together. He's my favorite Wu-Tang rapper and his flow still can't be rivaled. Overall, good album. 3rd best rap album of '08. I still put Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III and Rick Ross's Trilla on top

J Roc did you just say.. Trilla was betta than L.A.X. ..LMAO all ross raps about is money, cars, and women and being a boss. LAX is 10 times than that shit. Listen to the album. Listen to Game's lyrics. Oh and lax is better than tha carter III

Aight u may think I'm crazy for callin Trilla better than LAX. I'm totally down wit Game's rhymes on this album. He brought his A-game here and that's sick. Lyrically, LAX is his best CD. However, I'm big on beats, and in terms of the beats, this is probably his worst album. Trilla, however, had a good balance of beats and lyrics. I'm bein very unbiased here, too, since I like Game way more than Rick Ross. Honestly, I dont think '08 is a great year for rap so far except for weezy. The last albums I was really hooked on were American Gangster and The Cool.

Okay I'mma be completely honest. This Album is a Banger!! So many straight West Coast beats. I'll have to agree with J Roc to an extent. The album had a few misses with beats but lyrically it just struck. Personally I like the album more then Tha Carter III. But thats me. This cd has plenty of sick songs, Angel being one of it. So what more can you ask for..Straight BANGER

Okay J Roc..I Definately respect your opinion..but i think thew game is far more open minded than rick ross. Ross will ALWAYS go for commercial beats, thats why his album does well in the charts. But game tries to be like nas if you know what i mean. He wants you to hear his lyrics...i mean listen to letter to the king. NOW YOU TELL ME RICK ROSS Could do a song anywhere near to that level!!!
And as for 08 being a dissapointing year for hip hop, (forget tha carter III, That crap was so overated) (nas' dropped a classic, Ego Trippin was a great album, terminate on sight was fire, Prodigy of mobb deep's H.N.I.C 2 album was sickk, T.I. has dropped some superb songs from paper trail, Killer mike's album was an intelligent album, Bun B's II Trill was probably the best album this year, MAN I COULD GO ON!! So 2008 has been a good year for hip hop :) |

All I know is that Game is one of the few rappers that raps about more than money, girls, and that shit. Best review I have seen from nathan and i totally agree. This is 3.5. It is still better than 95% of the industry right now but still he got outshined way too many times. Common was much better on Angel, gets embarrassed lyrically by Nas on Letter to the King, and even the song Let Us Live is top notch because of chrisette Michele. I don't want to make it sound like this album sucked but truthfully besides the production and features, it didn't shock me either in a disappointing way or a good way. I will round up but with all the trash Game been talkin he needs to step it up a notch.

Wow, we got some feedback here! I wish I had more time to explain my rating but I’m in vacations at Cape Verde (google: paradise) and being on the net is not one of my priorities… Y’all who gave it 3 stars said pretty much what I think about the album already. Game is one of my favorite rappers even though I admit he’s not on the top 10 rappers right now (you’re not there too 50, so sit down!). I even asked him the question on his djbooth interview cuz I’m concerned that he’ll leave the game so soon… man, this was supposed to be his last album, so you’d expect an almost flawless material. But as for raping skills (lyrics & flow) this was a schizophrenic album: you had the Good, the Bad and the Ugly Game. I couldn’t appreciate most of the songs as a whole; when I liked the lyrics, I hated the beat, when the beat was good, there was The Game rhyming nigga with nigga 5x or more. 3.5 stars go to my favorites: My Life, Money (for Cool&Dre mostly), Let us live, Never can say goodbye, Dope Boys, Game’s Pain, Letter to the king. That’s it, I loved half the album, so, it deserves half the stars. Game is still a 5 star rapper to me, though!
PS: Y’all need to calm down with the hating on the reviews though… Nathan always explains his statements (it’s your job to do the same if you don’t agree) and when he doesn’t, he’s being SARCASTIC! Damn, it’s hard to deal with people who can tell a joke from a serious quote. |

the game is my favourite american rap artist, so it was a must when i bought this cd, and even though i am completely biased on the doctors advocate because it is my favourite rap album ever, this album didnt beat it for me....there are a lot of good songs on this cd, and hes clever coming up with the idea of immitating biggie on one of the tracks, let alone producing some great songs to listen to, there just wasnt enough...and where was big dreams? classic song that is much better than at least 4 of the tracks chose for this cd, i just didnt understand why that wasnt on the disk. this is a good album, im still bumping it everyday in my car to get more used to it, i love at least 7-8 songs so far so im really hoping the others grow on me more. gotta give this one a 4, games my dood and i hope he does what jigga did with the retiring statement but coming back out.

I love when the DJBooth community gets a good discussion goin, even if y'all are trashing me, so keep it coming. Let me touch on the rating: I completely understand the reaction, but understand that I factor in an artists' previous work into my rating. Is this a better album than T.O.S.? Absolutely, but that was average album for G-Unit and LAX is a slightly above average album for Game. Game's average happens to is better than most, but that doesn't change the fact that LAX is his third best album - and if you think it's as good as Doctor's Advocate or Documentary than you've been smoking a little too much of that Cali chronic.

The Game can do much better than this. I would've gave this album a 3 but "3=In Rotation" on this site, and I darn sure don't have this album in my rotation. Something was missing from this album. Maybe it was the missteps in the beat selection? L.A.X. doesn't flow to me and just like Jeezy's album, it sorta becomes a chore to listen to. I'm not sure if this is an improvement from The Game's previous two albums, but I like some of the introspective songs on L.A.X. But that is not enough to compensate the album's lackadaisical stature and repetitive nature.

L.A.X. is by far the best album i heard all year
i think 50 kiking him out of g-unit is the best thing that could have happened to him. but L.A.X is the greatest track of the year no doubt |

seriously all your people giving this less than 4 stars then you need to stop hatin. I think this is the only album i can listen to without changin the track. and as for the review you said "Now that I mention it, go back and listen to Dreams and then tell me L.A.X. isn’t Game’s weakest album to date." that's only 1 song just listen to 'money' 'angel' 'LAX files' 'pain' 'my life' there wern't that many quality songs on doccumentary or doctors advocate.

I really like this albulm. The Game take it back ol school west coast rap. The beats are hot. This is a classic.

IT SUCKS! By the way, it takes major balls to disrespect the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by including his name on a CD that goes against everything that he fought and died for. Furthermore, as a father of 2 kids, what kind of example is he setting for them. Pitiful, absolutely pitiful.

djmental..
since you reference Game's young kids, what rap artists put out albums that would be a good example to young children? |

I feel like there's too much drama with this album due to the hate and every controversy that takes away from it. Its actually a really decent album that deserves people.
And adamp there are good albums for young children. I strongly disagree. No disrespect but there is a lot of good rap out there. Blu is a really inspirational rapper. Theres no "hate on this" or whatever. Just see it for quality not your own bias. Its a decent album no doubt just to much drama with game took away from quality. |

This album is scattered it seems like he's being true is Cali roots then he gets commercial as hell... then tries to return back to the hood byt the end... it's a good album but it's a hard pill to swallow... i guess this is a disappointment for me... and i thought big dreams was the lead single when he got locked... why is that not on the album that was a banga... but he still pulls off an album that would be in my top 10 of albums dropped in 2008 so far...

the album review is relatively simple - the first half is decent enough, but The Game generally fails to shine, whilst the second portion is brilliant,As an MC, The Game has both improved and regressed, and that goes for Jayceon the Artist too - there aren't any moments on here as shockingly memorable as "It's Okay (One Blood)" or as genuinely intriguing as the Busta-featuring "Doctor's Advocate," and Lord knows there aren't any massive hits on here circa "The Documentary" era of his career.....
he is one of those guys you can't help but respect for coming back from the brink time after time, no matter how many metaphorical beatings he takes. Fine, it is better than anything any G-Unit member has released in the past three years, but how many moments on “LAX” are truly incredible or, dare I say it, legendary? He has definitely still come back with an admirable album - I'm just not sure that it is as MEMORABLE as it could have been..... My Top Picks 1. My Life 2. Never can say goodbye 3. Angel 4. Dope Boys 5. LAX What a year .... Luda outshining Game on his track && Game ripping Luda out & up on Luda's track..... Luda & TI ft. on their albums... Luda going toe-to-toe with Nas & Jay z.... |
