Sometimes it’s best to just let an artist speak for himself. When describing his new album, Love vs. Money, The-Dream said ”This album is just gonna be the first album on crack, basically.” (Insert your own Bobby Brown joke here). While Dream’s description of his latest synth-driven opus isn’t exactly eloquent, it is accurate. Love vs. Money takes everything that made his debut Love Hate work and amplifies it, creating a carefully crafted sonic universe of sex, money, melody…and more sex. Along with his production partner Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Dream has already been a force on the charts in 2009 thanks to his hand in creating the uber-hit Single Ladies. I hope he’s comfortable at the height of R&B success, because if Love vs. Money is any indication, the man whose voice launched a thousand “ella”s is going to be at the top of the game for a while.
The-Dream is a certified radio killer, so it’s no surprise that he’s laced Love vs. Money with tracks guaranteed to beat up the airwaves harder than (name censored) did (name censored). Sorry, the lawyers got nervous about that last line, you’ll just have to use your imagination. Now where was I? That’s right, Rockin That Thang, the 2009 version of Dream’s breakthrough hit Shawty Is A 10. There may not be any better example of Dream’s musical growth than the difference between Rockin and Shawty: where Shawty relied on vocal gimmicks Rockin is a complete musical thought, and where Shawty felt pressured to include a mundane Fabolous verse, on Rockin, Dream’s confident to the damn thing solo. If Love vs. Money gives birth to another hit, and I have to believe it will, it’s got to be My Love, a track that has Dream doing his best Jermaine Dupri production impression so his guest artist/diva Mariah Carey feels at home. Unfortunately, the Kanye-assisted Walkin On The Moon doesn’t do so well, recycling the same Prince-inspired formula Dream used on Love Hate’s Fast Car, but ultimately it doesn’t really matter. Tracks like My Love and Rockin may not be anything extraordinary, but they’re more than enough to rack up a couple more homicide charges for the infamous radio killer.
Besides our shared love of women in stilettos, The Dream and I have one other thing in common: we both admire the musical stylings of one Mr. Robert Sylvester Kelly. Love v. Money has R. Kelly’s fingerprints all over it, from Dream’s almost absurdly hyper-sexualized lyrics to his addictively catchy harmonies. In fact, it’s hard to imagine anyone but Kells opening a song with the line “Call Leticia, your beautician, cause your hair’s gonna need fixin,” but that’s exactly what Dream does on Sweat It Out. Sweat is an echoing ballad dedicated to the fine art of messing up a woman’s hair in bed that Dream can’t make quite as captivating as a true Kells jam - he just doesn’t have the voice - but coming that close to a master is still impressive. The Kelly-ization of Dream’s music runs throughout the album, from subtle lyrical touches like Put It Down’s “I’m all up on you like a monster truck” to an entire track about baby makin while one of Kelly’s classic jams plays in the background (Kelly’s 12 Play). Personally, I’m all for Dream’s use of Kelly as a musical mentor, as long as he stays out of the closet.
All these radio hits and R. Kelly-esque jams are nice, but they’re not what makes Love vs. Money a great album. No, the reason Love vs. Money deserves praise is an absolutely mesmerizing fifteen-minute stretch in the middle of the album. Stretching out over three almost continuous tracks, this is where Dream proves that when it comes to electronically drenched R&B, there’s him, and then there’s everyone else. The fireworks start with the title track Love vs. Money, a hypnotizing track that marries sorrowful synths with gun burst percussion while Dream turns the pain of a cheating girlfriend inward, admitting he substituted loving her for merely buying her things. The theme of material wealth as the catalyst for heartbreak continues on the slower but darker Love vs. Money 2 before finishing with Fancy, a piano-based ballad that expands into a six-minute orchestral experimental opus. This is the storytelling side of Dream that first won me over (see Love Hate’s excellent Nikki), and although it’s only March, until I hear better, Love vs. Money is the best R&B album of the year.

It's no exaggeration when I say that this album is one of the best I've heard in years and possibly the best mainstream R&B album since Usher's Confessions. The-Dream isn't the best vocalist in the world but he makes up for it 100% with top-shelf production and excellent lyrics. Love/Hate is continued to be played on my iPod until this day ("Nikki" & "Fast Car" have over 100 plays each) and I expect to be playing this album for years to come as well. I'm also glad Nathan noticed the striking similarity between Love vs. Money and Nikki; the latter obviously serving as LvM's foundation. (Fun Fact: Love vs. Money Part II features the same moaning sounds as Nikki; an allusion of sorts). Anyways, this album is a classic and there is little doubt in my mind that I will ever get tired of it. I can't wait to hear his next offering.

I wasn't sure if I was going out to buy this cd or download it until I saw Nathan's review. I had read a review earlier in Rolling Stone and they gave it the exact same thing but I had to be sure for myself. "Walking on the Moon" is my favorite track (prob because it is produced by Kanye) because of its Prince esqe feel. Otherwise all I have to say is that I'm glad that The Dream turned some of his songs into the radio killa's this time instead of some one else's tracks. The fifteen minute stretch over three songs is the best thing I've heard on an album so far this year.

first of all, lol to the "name censored" part a.k.a. Chris Brown & Rihanna. it took me a second to figure it out.
i was listening to this album last week (but I will buy a copy) and i was convinced. the material on this album is crazy. I agree, if nothing else comes out, this will be the best R&B album of the year. Love vs. Money (The song) is a classic itself. Walkin' On The Moon has that Prince-edge and a lil bit of Paranoid from 808s & Heartbreak. This is something you have to buy. 5 stars for me! |

Coming from a person who skipped The-Dream's first album, listening to "Love vs. Money" gave me the itch to track back and dig for some more Dream. The album was just that good. The-Dream makes up for his lackluster R&B/slow jam voice with spot-on melodies and solid production. It is no surprise that his tremendous writing ability showed up strong through every track, although I did enjoy the second half of the album more than the first. "Love vs. Money" is a smooth, cool album that will for sure get the attention it deserves.

After first listen, I would say its the best album so far released in 2009. Love vs Money is a very solid follow up to Love/Hate, though I personally prefer Love/Hate.
Expect more Prince comparisons to come in the coming months. Top 5 1. Walking On The Moon 2. Mr. Yea 3. Rockin That Shit 4. Love Vs Money 5. Put It Down |

I'm with Z. K'naan's "Troubadour" is at the top of my list for best of '09 thus far, followed by P.O.S. and Brother Ali.
But if we're talking strictly R&B, than is The-Dream's "Love vs. Money" better than Ryan Leslie's self-titled debut? I'll take the latter. |

Also as an added note: I love when Dream tells a story over multiple songs. In his last album he did it with the tracks "Nikki", "She Needs My Love" and " Falsetto". I'm glad to see he repeated that in this album.

Tight-A** melodies/harmony & Production all over.... It's a clear strength of his, one that absolutely belongs on every CD/song he releases/touches.... & The-Dream destroys it on that wit his slow flow....
My Top Picks: 1. Walkin On Moon (cant get enuff of this) 2. Rockin That Thang 3. My Love (Boo loves dis) 4. Take U Home 5. Mr. Yeah! |

I loved Dreams first album, I loved that is made me want to dance and I knew every dong on it.
I know that this is his type of music and what not, but I was hoping for a twist on this album. I didnt find one. It is ok. I Mean I def can listen to it. I think it is funny, that yall didnt like Fast Cars on the last album, that was one of my top favorites, and I love the Walking On The Moon Track. I just think it is so cute, and maybe it is because he walks away from the sex aspect that yall are @*#$! on, and is talking about being into the girl. IDK. I just enjoy it. Overall it will def be played in the car and it wasnt an ulimate loss, it just wasnt what I wanted. |

I can see why peeps are rating this a classic. But I think this album has some nagging issues that really keep it from making the top. It all boils down to The Dream himself. He just seems out-matched.
Take My Love. This song screams Mimi, from the production, the vocals, the hook, even the title of the track. It's as if The Dream is the featured guest. This track belongs on a Mimi album. This is similar to the next point. The production on here is fantastic, especially that middle section of the album. Some of these tracks just beg for a real singer to take over em. The Dream doesn't. He can sing, but I don't think he's good enough for what the production offered here. I couldn't help but think that someone else woulda done a masterful job. That thought just nagged away at me for the entire album. The next thing I thought was strange. The Dream has been responsible for some hits, no doubt. But, at least half of the songs here had really repetitive hooks that brought the songs down. Right Side of the Brain, Mr. Yeah, Part 2... With his resume, ironically, it showed a lack of creativity. He really couldn't think of anything else to say in those hooks?? On a related point, I thought he was free-styling. Listen to Part 2 as an example. It really sounds like he's just singing, going on in no particular direction. Not a big deal I guess, but it fits in with my broader theme, that he was just out-matched by the production. The singles, Rockin that Thang and Walkin On The Moon, they are good tracks but they don't have any staying power and are truly forgettable. That's a shame. I think people are overrating this album, simply on the production alone. xTRiNi said he nearly fell out of his chair on that segue from Fancy to Right Side of My Brain. I was really impressed too. Which is why overall I'm a little disappointed. If only this album went to a singer with true vocal talent. So should we expect Kells on a remix of Kelly's 12 Play?? |

Love vs Money is pretty insane. its light years ahead of his debut and the work he collaborates for others, more cohesive and seamless and ties greater with the album title. i love the way the songs intertwine with each other and it plays like one huge backing track. put it down is one of my favourites too alongside right side of my brain. mr. yeah is quintessential dream - its tongue and cheek - can we f*ck now? fancy is the standout track - its driven, dreamy and epic - its on some other type of sh*t- the dynamics, the chord changes, the hard-hitting beats and chameleon-like carnivale production.

I am trying to think of an album that i have heard that is similar to this... I can't. I just think Dream is on a different level than anyone else right now. I wouldn't say hes the best RnB artist out right now, but it is hard to argue against him. regardless I haven't heard an album like this in a while. Definitely 4.5 Not a classic, but almost. Progressive production makes this album spectacular! Love vs. Money Part 1 is absolutely amazing! I really like the level of creativity and the risks that the dream took when making this album. My only complaint is that the hyper-sexual nature of the album can at times get stale - I feel like the dream could branch out a little more with his lyrics. This and Ryan Leslie are my 2 favorite albums of '09.

How this album could have haters I'll never know but I guess everyone has different tastes. I for one tho thought this album was amazing. Best r&b album in years? The dream in control of r&b? I, personally, think people have somewhat forgotten about Ne-Yo. But I digress. The production is impeccable. & I actually love Dream's vocals. His voice is different, it's pleasant. I don't think you should knock the songs cuz of the vocals because his songs play to his strengths. He's not gonna sing over a song with a simple beat and try to sing the shit out of it cuz that's not him. He did great on this album. I took an hour out of a busy day to just hear the album front to back and skipped no tracks. Best R&B Cd of the year by far. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.
