Hip-hop has never been more Republican. The game’s always fueled intense debate – who’s better, LL Cool J or Canibus? Who’s hotter, Lil Kim or Foxy Brown? Whose man boobs are bigger, Rick Ross or Fat Joe? - but in recent years the divisiveness has reached George Bushian proportions. No longer are we allowed to merely like or dislike an artist, we must now choose sides. Love or hate. Blind acceptance, or complete rejection. You’re either with us, or against us. This isn’t music, this is war.
Over the last year rival armies have amassed to do battle over Chris Brown, Drake, Kid Cudi, the list goes on, but those battles look like skirmishes compared to the nuclear war that has been waged around Nicki Minaj. The first lady of Young Money saturated every radio station and blog known to man, causing many to recoil and declare themselves sworn enemies of Minaj (even as they admitted she outdid the likes of Kanye and Jay-Z on Monster). In the opposite trench the Barbie army dug themselves deeper, swearing their allegiance even as disasters like Massive Attack crashed and burned. Unfortunately, the truth for both sides is that Nicki’s debut album, Pink Friday, is nowhere as bad as the bloodthirsty would have hoped, or as brilliant as the Minaj supporters would like to believe; mostly because it’s impossible to figure out who Nicki is.
It’s hard to remember an album that changes focus as often and completely as Pink Friday. If by some miracle the album was your introduction to Nicki, based on the first three tracks alone you’d assume she was a relentlessly aggressive rapper. Friday opens with the straightforward rider I’m the Best, immediately segues into the heavily Busta Rhymes influenced Roman’s Revenge, which impressively finds her holding her own next to Eminem, and then finishes with the scatologically obsessed Did It On ‘Em. While Nicki busts out her mic again throughout the album, most notably on the Kanye-assisted Blazin, three tracks in we’ve essentially heard the last of Nicki Minaj the hardcore rapper. Oddly, none of these tracks truly utilize the trademark schizophrenic rhyme style she used on Monster and Bottoms Up, instead often relying - scratch that, over relying - on the elongated pause structure that even Drake has admitted is played out: “Hang em up…flat screen.” “Let them bums blow steam…radiator.” “I’m really tired of this rhyme style…Nathan S.” (Ok, so that last one’s not an actual quote.) For a rapper who skyrocketed to fame for her insanely original flow, Nicki’s work on Pink Friday is surprisingly tame.
But if by some miracle Pink Friday was your introduction, and you happened to press play at track four, you’d assume that Nicki Minaj was a pop singer who also happened to rap. We get our first taste of Nicki’s surprisingly good singing voice on Right Thru Me, a sparkling song that embraces the vulnerability she so adamantly rejected on the previous three tracks. After a brief respite to let Rihanna take the r&b reins, it’s right back to relationship crooning on Save Me, a record that reveals that she can embed her singing with the kind of subtle touches completely missing from her raps. The result is an emotionally compelling and perfectly crafted ballad I’d be hard pressed to identify as coming from Nicki if I didn’t know better. From the sweetly hooked Moment 4 Life to the hyper-pop of Check It Out, Pink Friday is far more mainstream than I anticipated. In fact, and I couldn’t have imagined writing this before listening to the album, I just might prefer Nicki Minaj the pop singer to Nicki Minaj the rapper. I wouldn’t listen to an album consisting entirely of Did It On “Em. But an album of Save Me? I could be convinced.
Though far from the paragon of feminism many would prefer her to be, Nicki absolutely deserves credit for proving that a woman can achieve widespread success without openly prostituting themselves (Pink Friday is almost completely devoid of sex). And while you may not like her brand of originality, no one sounds or looks remotely like Nicki Minaj, and in an industry of cookie cutter artists, that deserves applause. As for Pink Friday? It’s hard to say. It’s not so much a coherent album as a collection of songs often tied together by nothing more than the name of the artist performing them. It’s as if Nicki Minaj is battling herself, fighting a war within her music to figure out who she is as an artist. It’s a war she may never win, but if she does, the sky’s the limit…Challenger.

Decent work; I can see how these tracks can appeal to today's audience; solid production work too (or good beat choice). I was pretty surprised at the unexpected style of music presented here. Still though, solid debut.

Ah yes. Nicki Minaj. What to say. Well, what I have to say is that I'm impressed with this album. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Sure, there are songs that I would instantly skip (actually, "Did It On Em" is the only one I would never listen to again.) but otherwise, I found this album very enjoyable.
Obviously, my favorite song is "Blazin", for obvious sample reasons. Which brings me to the main reason why I love this album. It wasn't the above average lyrics coming from Nicki, but the production. I absolutely loved it. |

Nah this girl is a gimmick, i'm pretty sure that after about 2 years everybody will get tired of her. As for the album than it's an ok effort, it's not terrible but it's nothing fresh either

I was always expecting a pop sound to her album. It was always the case that there would be a more feminine soft sound to it, it's simply unrealistic to expect a "raw" album from someone like her on a label like Young Money. I enjoyed the album for what it was, easy to listen to and some catchy songs. Here I am is by far the standout track.

I give the album a 4 out of 5, I think it offers a little bit of everything from rapping to even singing. Solid debut album!

Better than I expected. She showed amazing versatility but I agree with Nathan on the elongated pause flow. It goes alright every now and then when you have a damn good joke to use it with, but no one can keep it up for as long as Nicki attempted.
Not surprisingly though, my favourite songs on the album were the ones with star features (Driz, Kanye and Shady). I still have yet to be wowed by a solo Minaj track. Highlight was the destruction of Kim on that Roman verse :D |

What I expected: lets admit the only things that really separated nicki from the rest of the pack are her animated face expressions, animated busta-luda inspired delievery and arguably one of the best flows we have heard from a female rapper. I was really looking forward to a whole album of Monster and Bottoms Up and Hello Good Morning and 100+ of her animated meltdowns that stole the spotlight from artists on their own tracks.
What it turned out to be: The flow - the only claim nicki has for a dope mc - is completely gone her and replaced by the pause-reference played out garbo. But what makes it worse, her references (today's mainstream equivalent for lyricism) are stale and iq-insulting. hang it up flatscreen, i couldnt wake it all alone...we, get of my dick...andy, i dare you....bamby, you aint mu son you my motherloving stepson. Jesus. And that shakesperian (chuckle) rhyme-the-whole-song-on-verbs-in-present-continuos attempt at poetry in right thru me is just boring.....history lesson Final words: Nathan completely surprised me with this review. I think you listened to too much Kanye's new album, so maybe while listening to this you were daydreaming her monster verse. On the other hand i cant forse myself to give it 1, cause she still has some technical skills. my expectations were to high, im just angry she didnt have courtesy to live up to them. 2.5 stars would be fair |

I was definately impressed with this album, she brought out a side of someone who i wouldnt think some one at young money could produce, her lyrics are more deep and meaningful, yeh youll get a song about poppin some @*#$! but its still a lot higher caliber then lil wayne or drake.
and you comment on nikki minaj passing kanye and jay z on monster, its because kanye and jay pusshed nikki to go as hard as she could because the first version of the song just was not good enough All in all a very solid album |

It was pretty good for her first album. She has good potential and she's original in her own ways. I really liked it though, I bumped this in the car and I was jammin' lol..

I don't think it's bad... I mean she does have hits to satisfy the crowds and it certainly is a different style from the rest of Young Money. We put these artist on too high of a pedestal where they'll never be able to come down and fulfill our expectations. We should take it for what it's worth and hopefully she'll make an album better than this one next time... but for now you can either choose to jam to it or not.

Im a HUGE Nicki fan. And i love her work and how she does her work. She is one of the best artists out there today. And she drops the hardest, best verses. She is crazy good. And is gonna be in the top forever. This album is a great "start off" album. Some of the tracks, i didnt like. And some i absolutly loved. Some was not what we are use from her. And some was that typical Nicki that made her who she is today.

"Nicki absolutely deserves credit for proving that a woman can achieve widespread success without openly prostituting themselves"
And that's what I enjoyed most. I hate when female rappers talk nasty just to work that angle. Just rap thats all I want to hear and thats what nicki did. I got the deluxe edition and out of 19 songs the only one I didn't like was Check It Out. This was a great album I have listened to it 5 times already. |

Nicki Minaj. The thing about her is that she is a mainstream female MC that can ACTUALLY rap, and rap well. We all know sex sells, but like Nathan and some other commentators mentioned, its good to see a woman go hard on a song (I'm looking at you "Monster") without strong sexual references.
Not sure the industry has seen something like her in a long time, if ever. Which is why, like the review pointed out, she's stuck in the middle between rapper and pop-singer. And, to be perfectly honest, I don't think the young money, cash money, etc. group knows exactly what to do with a hard-spitting and attractive female MC. It's a combination the industry hasn't dealt with previously, and I believe that's why we see her going back and forth between rapper and pop singer in this album. In a lot of ways, I think its similar to the industry's response to Drake (he can rap AND sing, and they know they got something big, but don't know how to leverage it in the right way, yet). We'll see how Nicki evolves, but I do think she's here to stay. Would be really surprised if she's just a fad--too good of an MC, in my opinion, for that. Here's to female empowerment. |

That's a great point. I think Nicki's personality and style would have fit G.O.O.D. music better. Kanye knows how to bring out the beast in her. |

I know I am a bit late, but better late than never! I finally listened to the album more than once and I can now give my honest opinion. Nicki Minaj has come a long way lyrically and personally in the past 6 months or so. She has definitely improved as time goes on and the sky is the limit for her.
Unfortunately, that limit is not yet even close to being reached. She can spit, but something just isn't resonating with the delivery all the time. I don't know what it is really. And I am a fellow Trini-boy, so I am really trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it just doesn't work on its own. The songs that I liked the MOST were all the songs with strong feature artists like the Eminem track, Drake track, Rihanna track, and the Kanye Track. So the more I studied that fact, the more I realized that I just liked what the other artists brought to the table. There are a couple other joints that knock a bit hard, but nothing I can play over again and again like the songs with other artists. If those 4 songs were not on the album, this would have easily only been a 2-star rating, but since the heavy-hitters are on here to lend a helping hand, it can just BARELY go into rotation...just for about 6 tracks anyway. |

The only problem I have with the album is the lack of originality. Before this album, Nicki has often taken the original route on her excessive amount of guest verses. I do like plenty of the songs on the album, it just lacks the wow factor that Nicki Minaj has in her. Overall, not a bad album by any means, but I'm not impressed with her like the way I know I can be.
