I’ve spent the last few years telling anyone who will listen that Ludacris is one of the best rappers alive, maybe even better than Jay-Z. Almost everyone thinks I’m crazy. DJBooth Album Review

I’ve spent the last few years telling anyone who will listen that Ludacris is one of the best rappers alive, maybe even better than Jay-Z. Almost everyone thinks I’m crazy. I’d insist that if you factored in his dynamic delivery, unbelievable consistency and sheer volume of work (his guest features alone are better than most rapper’s careers), he’s absolutely in the top three. As hard as I tried, every argument ended the same way: someone would play the “classic album” card, and I’d be done for. If only Ludacris could release a truly classic album, I’d think, I’d be able to convince the world he’s a truly elite MC. If only.

Luda and I must think alike, because even though he’s the top-selling Southern rapper ever, he spent his last album Release Therapy demonstrating his more serious side, winning a Grammy for his efforts. His campaign to earn some well-deserved respect continues with his latest effort Theater Of The Mind, but while the album showcases his range as an artist like never before, it unfortunately still falls short of classic. Theater has lofty goals as a concept album – it was conceived of as a musical movie - but ultimately it feels more like a collection of unrelated scenes than a singular masterpiece. (By comparison, American Gangster was a more cohesive and cinematic album.) I was hoping for an album that would settle the “just how good is Luda?” debate once and for all. Looks like the controversy will continue.

Ludacris became famous for his raunchy and punch line-heavy flow on What’s Your Fantasy, a tradition that proudly continues on Theater Of The Mind. One More Drink is exactly the kind of catchy R&B single that he’s built his empire on. At this point Luda could make tracks like this in his sleep, and the decent but not great Drink sounds like it, right down to T-Pain’s relatively auto-tune chorus. Much better is the up-tempo What Them Girls Like, a speaker shaking track that will have booties poppin’ from coast to coast, especially with an appearance from the increasingly grown Chris Brown. If these tracks were movies – and I’d throw Nasty Girl into this category - they’d be comedies like American Pie or the kind of softcore porn HBO shows late at night; enjoyable in moderation, but you can only watch some many times before it gets boring.

By contrast Theater Of The Mind takes a decidedly action movie turn, with the usually fun-loving Luda seemingly determined to join T.I. on house arrest on a weapons possession charge. Speaking of which, Ludacris and The King officially end their ridiculous beef on Wish You Would, by far the grimiest track on Theater. While T.I.’s arrest record make his hard talk believable, Luda wisely chooses to concentrate more on his bank roll than his arsenal. On a similar tip is Call Up The Homies, the kind of track that sounds good in theory, but doesn’t work in practice as Game and Luda just don’t have good chemistry. It’s the same story on Southern Gangster, Theater’s attempt at a musical gangster movie. Luda’s a legitimately good actor, but even he can’t convincingly pull off playing the action hero.

The finishing stretch of Theater Of The Mind is what I’m calling Ludacris’ Hip-Hop Masterpiece Theater, four straight tracks designed to win over anyone still hesitant to take him seriously as an MC. The most obvious examples of Luda’s musical mission for respect have a surprisingly east-coast underground feel. MVP surprisingly uses a Premier beat to demonstrates Luda’s lyrical range, and Do The Right Thang brings together some 9th production and a Common verse for Luda to flex socially conscious side. They’re both dope tracks, but in the end it comes down to I Do It For Hip-Hop, the track that was supposed to be incontrovertible proof Luda’s every line the rapper Nas and Jay are. Luda definitely goes toe to toe with the two New York heavyweights on Hip-Hop, but it’s not his best work, which ironically comes on high-energy bangers like the devastatingly banging and decidedly Southern Last Of A Dying Breed.

I don’t usually do this, but let me close with a brief address hip-hop nation. Listen, if you rate MCs based entirely on how much they sound like Biggie, than I feel sad for you. While you’re busy counting all the ways Theater Of The Mind isn’t as good as Reasonable Doubt, I’ll be enjoying one of the most original and prolific rappers to ever grab a mic. Ludacris is in my top-five, and I’ll go to my grave arguing he deserves to be there.

Thank you Nathan for being someone who realizes Luda's talent. I too have been telling people for years about how insanely lyrical he is and no one can take me seriously. This is by far Luda's best yet and he will always remain in my top 5 for the remainder of his career. Don't download this people! Buy it!

Top 5 easily, Ludacris deserves his dues. I have to admit, Release Therapy was not in my rotation very long, I think it tried to make Luda something he is not. He stuck to the basics on this album, and the results are perfected. This album has something for everybody, and every track deserves appreciation. There are "statement" tracks, while there are also his typical party tracks. Whichever the case, Ludacris gives us lyrics and a flow worth putting your ear a little closer to the speakers. The only negative of this album is the fact that 100% of it has been leaked for weeks. 4.5 is my exact rating as well, and a truly defined near classic.

Yup! Nathan I also personally prefer Luda's bangers over JayZ's but saying whos better than who ,well that's a never-ending debate (all i can say is the gap is narrowing).& yes people he is surely one of the best(forget the positioning)just remember this that Luda rightfully deserves a spot wit the Bests.Period.

My Top Picks:
1.What them girls like (one of the best club Bangers of 08)
2.One More drink (after watchin the video even haters can't stop diggin this)
3.Do the right thang (lovin the sample.can anyone tell where its from?)
4.Last of a dying breed (production + lyricism = classic)
5.Do for Hip-Hop (toe-to-toe)
6.Undisputed (KO)

So booth members Do The Right Thang by buying this ish & supporting the artist,so we can have a sequel....

Ludacris needs his props for this album. I've been waiting a long time for this album and it met my expectations and surpassed it. Luda is top 5 right now and his lyrics are so creative and dope!! Every song is at least a banger on this album..only a few dissapointments and the dissapointments are still solid. Has a great variety of slow club/r&b songs and straight bass banging tracks! My favs are Last Of A Dying Breed, Undisputed, and One More
Drink. This is one of the top albums this year..CLASSIC!!

Man, how come you didn't like Southern Gangster? What's not to like in it? I'm saying these Ving Rhames spoken word inserts can make someone sh*t himself, without even listening to the verses! Overall, I have to say I already think of this album as a classic.

Lyricaly, this is probaly his best album.. ive listened to it about 6 times now and every track he brings it given what hes talking about..Luda is THE hardest out right now.. he had his competition back when he was starting out, but all them pretty much fell off and raps about the same dumb garbage.. Luda stays fresh every time, every track, every bar... no one out the is as lyricaly talented as luda, F-U if you disagree..

but be realistic, this is not a near classic, its a great album..but its about a 3.5-4
and im not comparing it to reasonable doubt, illmatic, the infamous or any other classic album..
but there was jus something missing on this album for me...like a "war with god" track which was on release therapy, i dunno, dont hate because im jus givin an opinion

While I've been trying to stay away from this album for the past three weeks or so, I allowed myself to listen to the official singles. It still baffles me how much of the music industry is being exposed by the leakage of songs. To the point of the album, I do believe that this is an amazing album, and in my top 10 for the year so far. Not since "Word of Mouf" and "Back for the first time" has he had an album this good. I believe that this is the real side of Luda, which he didn't show on his last album. It is a mix of a good time with a serious message. Overall, I would give this album a 4.5, but I can't because there was something missing. Will we ever have a classic album from luda? In my opinion, if he keeps releasing albums like this for the rest of his career, then he doesn't need to have a classic.

Awesome album. the first half is hit after hit, but as it progresses it becomes pretty soul. Luda has always been one of my favorite rappers. And I love how he raps like he's so mature now, but his rhymes are still like word of mouf all over again. like in One More Drink, that song is hilarious. and Everybody Hates Chris is just what he needed to say: who cares. and he kills it with i did it for hip hop. one of the best albums of the year.
(no specific order)
1.) LAX
2.) Paper Trail
3.) Theater of the Mind
4.) Carter 3
5.) R3lapse-?

I've never really been a "fan" of Ludacris. His singles are fresh and his originality is always on point, but there was something about his persona that prevented me from truly becoming a loyal "fan" (maybe it's because he's from the South). Heck, I downloaded this album almost two weeks ago and I didn't get around to listening to it until today. I wouldn't say I was blown away, but I was definitely surprised at Cris' consistent use of quality rhymes and outstanding delivery throughout the entire album. Even the radio-driven records meshed well with their compliments, and I soon found myself enjoying every song. After looking at the project's busy track list, I wasn't expecting enough opportunities for Luda to fully get his mind across, but he did just that and then some. Nate, I don't think I'm ready to put Ludacris in my top-five, or even past Jay-Z for that matter, but he confidently showed up to the occasion with a purpose that undoubtedly proved some listeners wrong. Including me - a fan.

Nathan I would say you are crazy comparing him to Jigga about a year ago, but lately jig has been working very hard to dumb his lyrics completely down. So on that note I'm kinda down on him. However I'm very high on Ludacris. This album is hard hitting. Listening to some of the songs that were leaked I felt like he would let me down with this one. His last album was his best in my opinion. This one however is very good.I get the feeling that luda wants to solidify himself as one of the greats with this album. I'm not sure he did that from a lyrical standpoint, but he certainly gave us something worthy of buying and bumping. I enjoyed most of the tracks on this. Two tracks were ones to skip for me, Southern Gangsta and Everybody Hates Chris were too I couldn't feel other than that, this is a solid listen. My favs have to be, "I do it for Hip Hop" One More Drink, Undisputed, That hard hitting Intro that luda always seems to hit us with. Nasty Girl (One of the coldest beats Swiss has EVER done) and Do the right thing which I hope Spike uses on his next flick. It sounds like a theme song to one of his classics. This album is not Classic in my opinion, but that is not stopping me from playing it as we speak.

This album was not impressive at all. It had a few solid joints, but it was a bumpy ride & definitely not something i can let play from beginning to end. Intro, Undisputed, Everybody Hates Chris, MVP, I Do It For Hip-Hop, and Do The Right Thing were all good songs, but not enough for a 4/5, 4.5/5, ect.

One of the best albums of the year? How about one of the best albums of the last COUPLE years. This album is @*#$! amazing. Luda is a lyrical beast and is up there with the Game, Nas, Jay-Z, Pac, Biggie and Em as some of the greatest ever. The album was put together so well and the whole "theatre" atmosphere of the production of the album was great. Nas and The Game are my 2 favorite rappers all time and Luda's album, in my opinion, definitely surpassed Untitled and LAX. What an amazing piece of art to listen to. Very close to classic.

On a side note, how can you label an album a classic without listening to it. Thats one of the stupidest comments I've ever heard.

This by far is one of the best albums this year if not the best. Luda kills it every time out on this cd. He dropped bombs with everyone including the greatest to ever do it in many people minds Nas and Jay-Z. He also goes toe - toe with the King and the greatest rapper alive in T. I. and Lil Wayne. He got deep with Common and ran the streets with Game. He got freaky with Plies and gangster with Rick Ross. This album is a CLASSIC most DEF.

You will be able to play this album TRACK FOR TRACK all the way through without a skip!!!! That is the Definition of a CLASSIC album. An album that every track is lyrically GREAT and every beat is Creative and Rocking. This is the MUST BUY album of 2008! This Grammy Show is going to be crazy for the Rap category: TI, Ludacris, Nas, and Lil Wayne. I am still in shock after listening to this album. There is no way that this album cannot be a Classic. Simply AMAZING right here. This is a definite buy; for real! WOW is all I can say! WOW! Go get it!

Its a great album, but i dont think its his best, Luda proves that he is a great lyricist on this (it was never in doubt in my mind) but some of the production aint real flash, i would of loved to of heard him over some Timbaland, Kanye or Neptunes beats because thats usually when the men really shines. Still overall its a great album, but i still prefer Word Of Mouf & Chicken-n-Beer over this. Maybe my opinion will change after a couple more spins...

Anyone notice that when Nathan reviews an album favorably, nobody ever claims he is a "________-lover?" However, if Nathan doesn't find an album to be up to snuff, and he gives it a rating/review accordingly, he is automatically called a "_______-hater." Interesting....

He is one of the best rappers in the game because he is versatile and can deliver any kind of music- freestyles, playful lyrics, booty poppin music, and even the go-hard stuff. This album is a good one although I still don't think anyone can top the stuff of Word of Mouf.

Luda's Classic Album problem can be fixed, but it might take some work on his part.
1) His radio friendly club joints... Kinda love-hate. Formulaic, but still bangers. Gets the gurls dancin, but increasingly whack lyrics. Remember when Fantasy was out, the gurls went nuts, and guys were like Luda can rap! Now, his worst rhymes are on these tracks, w/predictable flow. If he doesn't want to step up the lyrics, then he needs to come out wit another Stand Up, with a lil more punch in the beat. Still love em though, but u just know it's not his best work.
2) His slower tracks are always his worse to me. Production takes crazy turns... Contagious to me just doesn't do it, feels fake. Woozy was pretty lame too. These slower tracks seem more like jokes, like is this dude really serious? Dunno, just never liked em, and i don't know if he could make a really good slower track.
3) Too many guests, or questionable guests, or using guests on tracks with the best beats. This really depends on the album, but if you have to have Hova or someone on it for it to be hot, you've got a problem. Here, i thought Jay-Z and Nas came lazy, while Luda came hard. Kinda makes luda look bad lol. The track with him and the Game, just no chemistry... If you use lesser guys like Rick Ross, make sure it makes u look good. Overall, I want a Luda album, so choose those guests wisely, and use them sparingly.
4) "Concept" albums are hit or miss. I really didn't get the movie aspect. Sounded more like a boxing match half of the time. Release Therapy... gettin creative is cool, but it's still gotta work. T.I. made a concept album that no one liked, then came back, kept it simple, and damn. If you gotta come out and explain it, it prolly isn't gonna work.
Overall, a really good album, but way too many guests. Not approaching Nelly territory, but still too many. A couple of tracks that are almost skippable. Can't have that for a classic album.

Oh, forgot 1 more point. Consistent theme! Each track has to flow into the next. Most of the time Luda does a great job, but there's always some track that breaks the flow. To me, starts to break down at Nasty Girl and Contagious. Do the Right Thing feels like he just added that track at the last minute. Doesn't really fit the theme... which was? I dunno...

New here but hopefullt my opinion mattters. Personally I have always had a spot in my mp3 for Luda. Back in the day when Incognegro was just getting its play on. His style has always caught my attention and his videos always offer something interesting. His style is one of the most unique in the game. He always gives you something to look forward to and I think he did that with this album as well. Though I wouldnt consider it a classic it will be one of Luda's more memorable albums. Some of his songs have something left to be desired but the ones that scream at you, "Undisputed, Everybody Hates Chris, MVP, Last of a Dying Breed, etc.", will leave a sweet taste in your mouth. He still brings that unforgettable style to the table while also bringing a new swagger to his already amazing game. His punch lines come as strong as ever and for the most part he punishes the beats giving to him. All in all this is an album I enjoyed listening to all the way through.

I've never heard a Luda track I can't grin while listening to. Guy is hilarious. We all knew this was gonna be a banger. I find it hard to hate the guy, seriously.

After knocking the doors flying open with the introduction, Luda packs some sorta heater concealed in every single track. "Call Up The Homies" puts shame on "Ya Heard", "M.V.P." has some lyrical candy for everyone, "Nasty Girl" is A LOT better than I would've expected, "Wish You Could" is sadly a bit of a let down, but I'd say "Southern Gangster" patches that up and Jamie Foxx makes "Contagious" well, just that.

Top 6; "Last of a Dying Breed", "Undisputed", "I Do It For Hip Hop", "One More Drink", "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Do The Right Thing".

Overall, dope release. 4 out of 5.

Pure Lyricst. Pure Beats. Pure Amazement From This Album.

Usually in an album 2 or 3 songs are just AMAZING, but in Theatre of the Mind, even the "Intro" is BANGING...

Top 5 Tracks

1) Undisputed
2) Last of a Dying Breed
3) I Do It For Hip Hop
4) What them girls like
5) One More Drink

PURE GENIUS IS MY OVERALL VERDICT

KK I've listened to this album many times, and I was impressed a lot, but not really that much. Apart from the last 4 tracks, which are classic mind; Ludas subject matter doesnt change much. Tha's what may make him enjoyable and prolific, but i dunno
3-4/5

This was probably the best album of the year, too bad Luda didnt have that epic club single that would've made the album more mainstream popular.
