I could spend this entire review writing about how Lil Wayne’s new album The Rebirth is the worst cross-genre transition since a bipolar Joaquin Phoenix tried to rap; about how watching Weezy play the rock star role is like watching a blind man throw darts; how I’d rather spend an hour listening to Glenn Beck than this album. I could waste the next 700 words writing all about how Darko Milcic has a better chance of winning a NBA MVP than The Rebirth has of a winning a Grammy; about how even Hellen Keller could hear what a disorganized mess it is. Yes, I could write all that, and it’d be true, but it’d be too easy. The more interesting question is, how did this happen?

To understand where we are, first we have to understand where we came from – or at least my version thereof. After an insanely prolific 2008, during which he appeared on approximately 4,117 tracks, Lil Wayne released Tha Carter III, a multi-platinum selling album widely hailed as a masterpiece by nearly everyone (including me) that instantly made him a bizillioanaire and granted him musical genius status. Thus, surrounded only by people who told him how great he was and bored by the relatively narrow confines of hip-hop, Wayne did what any self-respecting egomaniacal genius would do; decided he needed to become even bigger, and since it was literally impossible for him to became any more famous in the rap world, he decided to invade rock.

This wouldn’t have necessarily been a problem if Wayne had recruited the right help (Rick Rubin, for example), but convinced of his own genius Weezy F. decided to forge ahead alone, betting that he could craft the resulting album, The Rebirth, into something that would play on rock radio stations across the country and make him, effectively, the biggest star in the music history. For a man whose gambles almost always paid off, Rebirth is a rare loss.

We might as well get the good news out of the way first. Don’t worry, it won’t take long. It can’t be a coincidence that the album’s most “hip-hop” offering, Drop the World, is also the album’s best, even though the track’s success might owe more to Eminem than Weezy. Oddly, Drop the World is ultimately proof that Wayne could have made a great album by using rock’s aggression to further magnify his already destructive lyricism. In the same spirit I have to give it up to Rebirth’s lead single Prom Queen, a head-banging anthem that, despite some inexplicably juvenile vocals from Weezy, still manages to retain a certain guilty pleasure appeal, and the same goes for On Fire, a Cool & Dre produced cut that, cheesy 80’s aerobics video intro aside, manages to create an appropriately steamy audio ambiance. And…um…well that pretty much wraps up the good news.

Unfortunately the rest of The Rebirth oscillates somewhere in between ill-advised and unlistenable, starting with Da Da Da, a track’s that’s every bit as well crafted as its title would suggest. In many ways Da Da Da is a perfect summary of the album’s failings as a whole: it exhibits only the most meager understanding of rock song structure, the lyrics are almost absurdly simple (“Gimme me that funky monkey,” really?) and, perhaps most importantly, Wayne can’t sing, a fundamental problem that carries over into Ground Zero, a power chord only cut that finds Wayne doing his best (or worst) English punk impression, right down to an absurd English accent. If Ground Zero is indeed as low as it gets than Paradice is subterranean. At least Ground Zero is mercifully short, but on Paradice we’re treated to almost four minutes of Wayne auto-tuning his way through a Gun n’ Roses wanna-be power ballad, and I mean Wayne “treated” us to Paradice in the same way he would “treat” us to a kick in the testicles. None of this should really be surprising, I think we all expected The Rebirth to be bad, but what’s almost unfathomable is just how bad it is.

So, have I whipped you up into a Rebirth bashing frenzy? Good, now forget it. The real disaster would have been if Lil Wayne had made a hip-hop album this bad. Then we could have bemoaned the loss of one of the greatest rappers ever. But, instead, he tried to do something he had no business doing and failed accordingly. It’s simple really. So like Rocky 5 or the entire Bush presidency, I say we all just pretend like The Rebirth never happened. Sometimes it’s best to forgive, and to forget.

For the record, Lil Wayne apparently put out about 17 versions of The Rebirth, including a deluxe edition, a super-deluxe edition and a mege-ultra-Voltron edition. I was just working off your run-of-the-mill regular Rebirth, so if you've got one of the other versions and want to fill in something I missed, please have at it.

This might be your funniest review yet. I love how you worked from the top down (deep down- no sexual puns intended).

Though, I feel the need to express my opinion on Drop The World. I actually think Wayne outdid Eminem on that track. All I hear from Em is delivery that suited the song, the rest is okay for him at best. Almost like a Relapse leftover verse.

That aside, after much convincing/begging, a friend convinced me to check this album out. And believe it or not, the one song he recommended for me to check out that would change my mind was freaking Paradice. Now, if you excuse me, I need to see if I can apply Mighty Putty to my ears. Thank you and goodnight.

I think it's safe to say that we had extremely low expectations for this sh!t. And I'll be the first one to admit that I liked it more than I was expecting, but I was expecting it to be about as pleasant as a knife wound.

Much of "Rebirth" feels like posturing, there's too much of that fake "rockin" going on with Wayne trying to prove to us that he can "rock" as I get the impression that Wayne/producers just doesn't understand the genre. The guitars were screechy, amateurish/formulaic and annoying and the same could be said about Weezy's auto-tune assisted voice.

If anything memorable came out of this album that will last is "Drop The World", the rest of the stuff should only be listened if you’re trying to beat the sound of the road works outside.

"The Rebirth" still sounds OK/merely passable on guest spots here and there, but let Weezy loose on his own and apparently he decides to become the most unbearable voice in the game. At times, he doesn't even seem to be trying. He doesn't rhyme, or even flow on beat most of the time; just randomly blurts out offensive words or phrases like the ultimate mad rapper, complete with Tourette's Syndrome. What once was a bit provocative or interesting (at the time of release of "Prom Queen") is now just well-worn territory.

So will "The Rebirth" be a commercial success? Possibly. Will it make Lil Wayne credible in the eyes of your average rock fan? Unlikely.

Let's talk about music that makes me feel ashamed to like aka My Top Picks:

1. Drop The World
2. Prom Queen
3. One Way Trip

honestly after the 8th grade i havent been able to stand waynes voice i feel like a baby is crying into my ears sometimes... but i have to admit he has great rhymes and kills on some tracks... problem here is... this isnt his music. i dont know what he was thinking other than trying to get more famous? i dont know how considering that probably over 80% of any hip hop/rap listener likes him and he should be content with that and just stick to it because this obviously isnt his thing.

I tried to give this album a chance, I really TRIED, but it is just not good. Tracks like "On Fire", "Drop The World", "Ground Zero", "Runnin" and even "Prom Queen" I can deal with. But its horrible tracks like "American Star", "Get A Life" and uber horrific "The Price is Wrong". His whole freakin direction was wrong for this album. Try again Weezy.

have any of you people heard anything apart from hiphop? haters!!
finally something which doesnt sound exactly the same as every other album... Im so sick of hearing the exact same bullshit from all these new artists. I bet if anyone else were to change up their style they wouldn't even come close.
If rock people are liking this album, it must be a great success that he can branch off out side hiphop and still make killer music. I bet most of you guys hated BEP, album cause it was sooo different.
Act hardcore all you want, hate all you want, but this is a great album for a hip hop artist.

Straight up the only listenable songs on this album (in order they appear) are....

American Star
On Fire
Drop The World (Best song)
Runnin
One Way Trip (which is still very average)

The rest.....is unfortuntatly just messy, unorganised, autotuned CRAP!!

Wayne had a chance to make something really good with this project, just like Kanye did when everyone questioned his 808's project. By delaying the album repeatedly only pissed everyone off, further sinking the credibility of this CD.

Truthfully, Wayne should have just stuck to the script and released those unreleased Carter III tracks on this project like he first intended to and it would have sold him another milli......it will be interesting to see how this album fares on the charts

Universal/Cash Money......u messed up bad!!

@Chabillionaire Sorry, I have to disagree with your central premise. I listen to a lot of rock, I was raised on rock (dad was blasting Black Sabbath from day one) - I don't dislike this album because it's something different or because it's rock, I dislike it because it's just bad music. Period. Play any song on here back to back with some of today's best rock groups (Muse, Deftones, Silversun Pickups, whatever), the qualities not even close.

That's not hate, that's the truth.

Good to see some of my fellow booth users are fans of rock music (which this album is not). Give me anything by The Strokes, Muse, Radiohead, Kings Of Leon, The Hives, Pearl Jam, Arctic Monkeys, The Vines (the list is endless really) over this piece of garbage. Speaking of rock music, take a listen to 1901 by Phoenix. Now that is a dope rock track.

To this album, ive listened to every track on this album & there is nothing on it (including Drop The World) that is worthy of another listen. Im very glad I didnt take the risk in buying this album.

Let the hype for 'Tha Carter IV' begin.

@AUSSIE & NATHAN. I had never really listened to muse before even though i had previously heard good things, but after seeing both of you mention them, i had to check it out. I am so glad I did! I had always thought "time is running out" was franz ferdinand or killers or something. Well anyways, I think I have enjoyed the review and comments more than this actual album. Apart from the obvious choices of drop the world, prom queen(even though i like xv's remix more), and one way trip, this album just doesnt sound good. I bet that if he was given all of the same beats and aproached this with a hip-hop mentality, it would have been a banger. I mean there is way too little live instrumentation, and as soon as I get into a guitar riff or a drumbeat, it switches up and turns plastic. Now I am a huge fan of genre-transcending music (like franz ferdinand mentioned above) but wayne just doesnt know how to ride these instrumentals and his voice is not enjoyable. He just seems to be an actor playing a role, but doesn't really have the emotional expression to pull it off. 2 stars for the great production.

So, I heard this album already. When I first heard about this album, i thought wayne was losing it. I gave it a listen. I'm a fair guy. I like to try something different with music these days.

one thing i liked about this album was the rock production. it's like Nathan said:

"Wayne could have made a great album by using rock’s aggression to further magnify his already destructive lyricism."

And I agree. The aggressiveness in rock music would have got a pass and that's what i like in rock music.

it's not that i 100% hate (not meaning that I'd bump it in my car), but if songs like Drop The World, Runnin' & On Fire were what most of the album was like, then it would have made the cut.

Listenable Songs:
On Fire (The Scarface Sample was classic. I always liked that song, but the orginal was better.)

Drop The World (What more can i say? Great Collab. Can't wait for the video.)

Runnin' (Shanell's hook got me addicted to it.)

On Way Trip

Knockout (Only because of Nicki Minaj's hook)

All I can say is....at least it's finally out (lol)

So I've been listening to this album for about a month now and I actually dig a lot of it. "Ground Zero" is by far the best "rock" like song on the album and has video written all over it. I can just see Weezy jumpin off a Cliff and just flowin while he's fallin to the ground. But I digress this is not a ROCK ALBUM Its just an Album with rock infusions he raps of rock production its good for what it is, and to be honest I've been vibin to it.
Notables-
Ground Zero
Knock Out
Drop the World
Paradice
One Way

5 above-avg tracks- how many does Gucci have on his Album, not hatin just sayin

The best songs on this album are (in no particular order):

Runnin (featuring Shanell)
Knockout (featuring Nicki Minaj)
Drop the World (featuring Eminem)
Ground Zero

I mean it wasn't as bad as I thought. It's the closest a rapper has been to being both a rapper/rockstar at the same time besides Kid Rock. NO ONE can fuse rap and rock more authentically and enjoyable than Kid Rock can. Still surprised at the low ratings though because it's Lil Wayne and I just thought that everyone would instantly love it. Anyways, the tracks I picked are the only ones that are repeat worthy and are actually quite enjoyable to me.

Honestly i think the album was not as bad as you guys are making it seem. The album does have its share of bad songs. In fact the majority of the songs were ok or better. Only 3 songs i had to force myself to listen to.

On fire
Da da da
The price is wrong

All the other songs were good. As for a rock album it sounds closer to rap. Just rock beats. But thats weezy.

@Aussie: 1901 is sick. But it's synth punk.

I gotta give it 5*. I can see why a lot of ppl don't like it, but I do. Wayne doing a rock album is not new. Wayne's been experimenting with rock since Carter II and pushing the envelope further with each album.

He may have alienated rock fans by jumping back and forth between sub-genres. I love it. I'm a fan of "white ppl music". Yeah, "white ppl music". Within rock, you have alternative, punk, synth punk, acoustic, emo, screamo, indie, etc. and fans of each hate the others. Well, I just like it if it's good, everything from neo-soul to kumbia.

A lot of ppl are saying Ground Zero isn't rock. Actually it is. Rap rock has almost become a rock sub-genre to itself. Nothing new, the intensity of the instrumentals lends itself well to rap-like delivery. Rockers have been doing it for years.

I'll admit there are some lacking tracks, but I've never heard an album that was 100%. If you want to hate, it's easy to find a reason.

I'm glad Wayne did this. It's obviously something he was passionate about, enjoyed, and will be enjoyed by the right listener. I hated the delays, but I understand them. Did he do this to win a Grammy? Did he expect to? Maybe in the beginning, but he knew he was fighting his own popularity and fickle public. But he still did it because he wanted to.

If you're a hater at all, you'll hate this album. Even if you're not a hater, you still might not like it based on your foundation or experience.

Love to Weezy for going all in, looking to good ppl, and for not doing what everyone else wanted. This sounds as much or more like the Wayne I hear on all of his albums and mixtapes. This is Wayne. If you don't like this, you don't like Wayne. You may like his lines or attitude, or delivery, or voice, but not him. I do.

I just wanted to start by saying I went and purchased the album even though it was getting alot of criticism. I mean I give Wayne props for going away from what he does best and to try something new. I mean come on people over course it is not going to be a Carter 2 or a Carter 3 but not a bad effort on his part. I liked every track but about 2. This should be in the rotation and it will get me by until the Carter 4 it is a good change of pace not something I would want to hear from him again but it works.

@Corner49 - True, though Phoenix are a alternative rock band so I count it as a rock song. Its good to see that im not the only one who listens to genres outside of hip hop that uses djbooth.net

@TheBayToLA - Good to see that me & Nathan influenced you to take a listen to Muse, their last 3 albums are must listens

What happened was the song "let it rock" was a huge hit so obviously he thought if he did rock it would be the same but he thought wrong. i like lil wayne as a rapper not as a rocker plz go back to rap

It's ridiculous how many people have their heads in the sand on this one. This is absolute garbage, a sad waste of resources,(and I ain't talking about wayne's talent)I'm talking about the plastic this pile was recorded on, the gas used to ship it to stores, tha manpower used to stock the shelves...he should be embarrassed!

I didn't get into it fully on the first listen, but as with 808s, quickly fell in love with it after a few spins. One of the best rock albums I can think of. Paradice, Drop the World, Ground Zero, I'll Die for You . . . Those are CLASSICS!

Kinda late on this one, but I did in fact like "Knockout." Everything else I wouldn't recommend to the overall resurrection of Hip-Hop.
