And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for…drum roll please. Tha Carter III, the most highly anticipated hip-hop album of all time, has finally arrived. In the ridiculously long build-up to the release of Lil Wayne’s alleged masterpiece expectations grew so insanely high that two months ago I wrote, “if Tha Carter III doesn’t wash my car, bake me a carrot cake and give me a blowjob, I’m going to be disappointed.” Well, let’s just say that after listening to the album for days my car’s still dirty and there’s not a cake in sight. This is not the classic album that will place Weezy’s tattooed face onto the Mt. Rushmore of hip-hop legends, but it certainly doesn’t disqualify him from the greatest rapper alive title either. Maybe now that the album’s finally here we can finally put aside all the hype and counter-hype and just see Wayne for what he really is; an almost psychotically creative rapper who’s rewriting the rules of the hip-hop game.
Tha Carter III is a wide-ranging affair that careens wildly from teenage-girl friendly pop to bone-crushing obscenity-laden tirades, and the overall effect means that while there’s something on this album for everyone to love, there’s also something for everyone to hate. All the lyrical heads out there undoubtedly wanted Tha Carter III to be wall-to-wall tracks like Dr. Carter, a heavily conceptualized song featuring Weezy performing linguistic surgery on the sometimes comatose hip-hop game; ending with him proclaiming “welcome back hip-hop, I saved your life.” Or even something along the lines of Mr. Carter, his collaboration with the similarly named Shawn Carter (a.k.a. Jay-Z). I was hoping that this track would finally produce a clear-cut winner for the best rapper alive spot, but the truth is Hova’s complexly calculated flows and Wayne’s stream-of-consciousness rhymes are stylistically so far apart that directly comparing them is almost impossible. As much as we want to hear two all-time greats spit on the same joint, the pair have now twice only succeeded in producing vaguely disappointing tracks (first Brooklyn 2.0 and now Mr. Carter). Some things just weren’t made to go together, and apparently Hova and Weezy mix about as well as Oprah and spandex.
On the flip side, with all the accolades thrown Mr. Wayne’s way it’s easy to forget that he’s never had a real solo hit until Lollipop hypnotized America with its trance-inducing beat and Wayne’s robotically sexual innuendos. Tha Carter III takes a few more stabs at chart success, most notably alongside the other King of the Guest Verse, T-Pain, on the bouncing Got Money. With a heavyweight line-up like Got Money is guaranteed serious spins on the airwaves, but it’s also one of the album’s most predictable and maybe even formulaic tracks. And that’s just the start. Wayne uses Tha Carter III to display every style imaginable, from Kanye produced soul tracks (Let The Beat Build) to blues-laden odes to his hometown (Tie My Hands) to swaggering Southern- fried bangers (La La) and everything in between. That versatility’s impressive, but it’s also too inconsistent to make Tha Carter III a landmark album along the lines of Illmatic, Ready to Die or Thug Life. Then again, Biggie or Pac never dropped 100 ill verses a year. Up until now, the unofficial rule was that in order to be considered a legend, a rapper had to produce at least one truly classic album, but Lil Wayne is so far outside the lines of conventional thought that to apply the usual criteria to his career is a huge mistake (which hasn’t stopped most reviewers from doing it anyway). Love him or hate him, Weezy is undeniably pushing the boundaries of the art form, and it’s the least we can do as critics and fans to expand how we would usually judge him. Or we could just simplistically label him as either “hot” or “wack” and successfully avoid anything that even remotely resembles actual brain activity. You know, either one.
Quick note: I know this review’s getting long. So if you’re already bored of me then feel free to stop here. But if you’d like to read me break down Wayne’s possible suicidal tendencies, then by all means, read on.
There’s a reason I’ve started calling Weezy, Mr. Out of His F**king Mind. At times on Tha Carter III his rhymes are so incoherent and schizophrenic his sanity seems to teeter on the edge of collapse. For example, here’s a rough summary of the inexplicably dope track Phone Home: a piano melody, circus sound effects, a monster Cool and Dre beat, a chorus built around a famous quote from ET, and Wayne spitting rhymes like, “I’m a bear, like black and white hair, so I’m polar.” It’s so strange only Weezy could pull it off, but it’s nothing compared to Playing With Fire, a rock-infused track that culminates in Wayne describing checking into the same hotel where Martin Luther King was assassinated while screaming: “Assassinate me! Assassinate me!” It’s such a shockingly insane moment it’s hard to believe it made it onto the album. Or maybe, just maybe, Lil Wayne understands that the surest way to become a hip-hop legend on par with Biggie and Pac is to die an early tragic death. Could he be so obsessively driven to reach legendary status that he’s willing, even on some subconscious level hoping, to die; be it a quick death by homicide or a slow suicide by syrup and painkillers? Greatest rapper alive or not, Wayne is unquestionably the most fascinating rapper alive – and I suggest you f**king appreciate him while he’s here, because there’s never been a rapper like Lil Wayne before, and there never will be again.

Good album? Yes. Great album? Yes. Classic album? No. Best rap album of Lil' Wayne's career? Yes. Weezy should be very proud of this effort, lyrically it is on a whole nother planet that only he inhabits. And what about the fans? The fans should expect to listen several hundred times before they catch every insane line that is spat on this 16-track effort. That last paragraph was deep, Nathan. Only time will tell...

Agreed with Z and Nathan, NOT a classic by any means. People define classic albums in various ways but this is not a classic album. It's a shame for Weezy that a lot of his stuff was leaked these past couple years because his drought mixtapes 2 and 4 were better than this album in my opinion. However, sooooo many hot bars and the lyrical content is insane! The production was a little dissapointing, especially the Kanye joints, I was really looking forward to those. Overall, best album of 08, best Weezy will ever put out. Great album.

Nathan i think this is the BEST review i've seen on on the Booth since i started coming here almost 2 and a half years ago, but of course when i first came here all i was doing was trying to find a place to listen to music, but now the DJBooth and everyone's opinions have changed my perspective on music and everyone's style, but one thing is definite, Lil Wayne will go down in history as One if Not the greatest rapper alive for his unforgettable style and creative raps.

Maybe my expectations were a little off the charts for "Tha Carter III," but after coming back to reality, the album is quite strong compared to most of the mainstream LPs out there. Lil Wayne wasn't trying to copy any other rapper before him, he shrived to accomplish simply what got him here today and succeeded. There is no doubt that this album would have sounded even better if Wayne's classic mixtape and leaked tracks were on the tracklist. But if that happened, "Tha Carter III" would have been far from the most anticipated album of the year. I think everything worked out fine for Weezy in the end. His lyrics were spot on and he recruited some of the best producers in the game. I just hope that some listeners don't let the hype go over their heads.

To be honest i was expecting sumin so commercial it'd make my insides as syrupy as waynes. I mean, lollipop? I was already lookin ahead to The Dedication 3 to listen to wayne being the lyrical genius that he is but man was i impressed with C3. The album is solid, almost but not quite classic. Tie my Hands really got me, Dr. Carter and Phone Home are in the dictionary next to the definition of "definition", er, i mean creativity. I disagree with Nathan on Mr. Carter though, that has got 2 be one of my favourite tracks on C3 and i love the opposite polarity between the Carters. Up to now my favourite album of the past year or so had bee Lupe's The Cool, but i think C3's taken the cup. Kanye's prods were diff but i kinda liked em...
Misunderstood was the perfect way to end it. I think this album thoroughly answers all the haters on whether Weezy can have more depth on his lyrics. And delivery, OMG!!! |

Solid review Nathan, I totally agree. Not a classic by any means. Its a strong album though. I had to say I loved Swizzy's production on "Dr. Carter", concept is strong there too, "Phone Home" was actually pretty tight, very unique and banging, "Tie My Hands" is sooo smooth, especially with Thicke. I thought "Mr. Carter" was pretty good, both having a lyrical slugfest. Have to say the review was pretty much on point. Anybody feelin "La La"?? I really thought that joint was wack, maybe its just me.
Weezy is not the best rapper alive, he's probably the hottest rapper, but not the best. There is a huge difference between BEST and HOT. Still waitin on some classic material from Wayne, but this will hold until then. |

Nathan, That was strong! Very nice write up! I expected Lil Wayne's album to be well produced, and it was. I expected him to approach every song with a certain swagger that will rewrite the walk many MCs after him to follow. He Did! I expected him to speak negatively and show a unique perspective on the world that many will find offensive. He did! I didn't expect him to be as creative as he was when it came to song concepts. Tracks like Mrs. Officer giving us his version of @*#$! the Police reminiscent of 50 Cents I smell @*#$!. Kindly declaring a sub conscious war with 5 0. To the surgery he performs on the dying game we call Hip Hop on Dr. Carter. These songs although creative were not the high lights of the album. ( I refuse to mention Lollipop, A millie, Got Money, or any of the songs that we've heard 1000 times b4 this thang dropped.) The songs I enjoy most are, Shoot me down, misunderstood, Playing with fire, and the very best song on the album, Tie My Hands where Weezy hold down those who may have drowned in the biggest catastrophic event in this nations history since Slavery. Weezy didn't bring an album to the world that you can compare to any of the Classics that we group together. However that doesn't mean that Carter III will be forgotten either. Lil Wayne is holding the torch in 2008 rather you like it or not. You will walk his walk, or hate him, but either way you will think of him, speak of him, and listen to him this year. For that alone this album gets 4 stars. And One extra 4 entering rehab.

Personally, for me, the problem with tha carter 3 is that the majority of the tracks are ones that you cannot really enjoy after you've heard it about 4 times. I cannot sit hear and say that any of the tracks on the album make me feel uplifted in any sort of way, except for pergaps "Mrs Officer" or "Mr Carter". Whilst weezys lyrical flow and content are hard to be rivalled with on "Dr Carter", you just find yourself getting bored after a while. Greatest album of the year? No. Rick Ross' Trilla is in a different league. This is on a par with bun's II Trill

Great album but definitely not a classic. I wouldn't even consider it the best of the year actually (that would go to UGK's undeniably great "Underground Kingz" album) This album has its moments but it simply doesn't live up to the hype.
Lil' Wayne is a great rapper but he's being crushed under all the expectations he has set for himself. If you go around calling yourself "the greatest rapper alive" than your album is expected to follow up on that statement; which C3 does not. My recommendation to Wayne is to stop being so cocky. If I had been expecting anything less than perfection than I may have considered this near-classic but unfortunately that's not the case. Look out for Ludacris' "Theater of the Mind". With guest spots from Kanye West, John Legend, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Q-Tip, T.I. and others I have high-hopes that it can be the biggest album of '08. |

Carter 3 is the best because of the variety of styles of music in the album. There is some slow songs and some hard lil wayne songs. Wayne is the best of them all and he is lyrically the best one. No one can match his flows.

Look, I will buy this album, but still this album once again proved to me that he is not the Greatest rapper Alive. I loved the Carter 1, and then couldnt stop listenin to The Carter II. After the Carter II, I was reday to say that if he dropped one more album that was equal to the Carter II I would crown him at least one the best out right now. That all changed though. Wayne dropped from my top 5 to straight off my radar. When I think of the best out right now, Wayne doesnt come to mind. I'm sorry, but when I think of good music, I think off dudes that come straight from the heart. Is wayne a good rapper, and maybe even a great rapper? Yes, most likely, but after listening to this album he proved to me that he is not even close to the Greatest Rapper Alive. Macth him up to Eminem, NaS, Jay-Z, and many more I can name. For Wayne to say he is the best out right now measns he is better than those 3. Sorry Wayne, but hell no. The drugs are definitely gettin to this dude. As far as what I would rate this album, it is a 3.5. Both the Carter I and II are 4.5 in my book, and this sh*t aint even close. This album will be tops the 3rd best hip hop album of the summer. This sh*t wont even be close to NaS and TIP's Fire. I aint even mentionin Busta Bust, The Game, and maybe even G-Unit. This album isn't Wayne's best, but still worth buying for $10. 3.5

O yea, by the way, Lupe's The Cool is definitely the best in the past year. Just to give my rating a 3.5, I will do a 4 now to even it out. I know Wayne can do better, and hopefully he does cuz he is a great lyricist, he just needs to step it up a little. Hip Hop IS Alive, and Always will BE!

Oh and i have to disagree with you on Mr. Carter to Nathan, that song was one of my favorites, the beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice just KILLED it!, lol, and to state my opinion thoroughly, i dont think to be the greatest rapper alive you've got to put out the best album of the year, i mean everyone's gonna have there ups and downs, but its just the flow of the artist and the variety of music they put out or just try to reach out to other people and genre's, and i think Lil Wayne does that and in my opinion he IS one of the greatest rapper's alive, the best- possibly, and TheGreatest im gonna have to agree with you on the Eminem part, i wish he would get back in, he was a great lyrical artist to lol.

If Wayne were in the hiphop scene during the times of Biggie and 2Pac, i think he would be remembered as one of the greatest rappers ever. It is tough for a rapper these days to be compared to those classic artists of the past. In the young days of hiphop, wayne would have been the greatest and we would be talking about him the same way be speak of Biggie and Pac

Lol different styles of rap that u cnat compare or put together thought Mr carter would have made that clear to you. Nas, Biggie, Hove all from new York different flow (very much quicker where as Weezy is essentially from down South slow beat.) Hip hop has spread out and diversified since.

I happen to be one of the individuals who isn't willing to throw Wayne's name in the legendary category. Although he IS and HAS been my favorite since Tha Block Is Hot I'm wise enough to know the difference between being a fan and being realistic. Is he the most creative rapper??? In my opinion ABSOLUTELY!!! People are always comparing rapper to each other. Ok. I dare you to attempt to compare Wayne to someone. I'll wait....... My thoughts exactly. He is on some other @*#$! all together. His punchlines are literally ALL over the place. Some say "How stupid" I say "Different.". Whether its different good or different bad that all in the eye of the beholder. Well in this case ear.
I happen to love Tha Carter III. No point in pciking which album in the Carter trilogy is better bc I liked something in all of them. Tha Carter it was Mannie's production. Tha Carter II is was him breaking it off with Mannie and saying I can do this @*#$! on my own. Tha Carter III its the randomness of the album. Dwayne Michael Carter is @*#$! INSANE. He's not playing when he says he's not like us. He isn't. But that makes him the crazy genius he is. I couldn't agree with Nathan more when it comes his car being wash, the cake and blowjob. HOWEVER, I feel this album deserves whatever rating it gets from ANYONE because the truth of the matter is it would have NEVER lived up to the hype surrounding it!!! Ever!!! No matter how good it was. This was the most anticipated ALBUM period since I've been alive. My mom doesn't even listen to Wayne and asked me about THE album not about the artist. So therefore Weezy could have put out the "BEST" album of all time and it wouldn't have been the best album of all time due to the hype and anticipation leading up to it. Thats the truth of the matter. For the Record: I don't think Wayne is obsessed with dying or becoming that legend in the game that died early. BUT I do feel he is obsesse with MUSIC and he could honestly give a damn whether people like what he raps about or how he does it. He is on his own planet, living his own life!!! |

Great review nathan. When I first heard this album I didn't like it,then I broke it down into unconventianal thinking and then I thought about the first time I heard stankonia and aquamini, all of em joints, illmatic and both lupe albums and ill say he did what a true mc of his calibur is supposed to. create new lanes and pave new roads& did imentioned shorty freestyled most of the album.(In the same vain as odb debut)my only complaint is the sequence other than that near classic.

And also,mixtapes&16's are different from albums.mixtapers don't buy albums and at this stage its time for him to tour fill up stadiums and headline.few rappers can do mixtapes and be in high demand lose songs to leaks and execute nas whole career every other album has to be changed up.you thought you loved food and liquor guess what the real classic is the first album but label gotta get paid beats, studio time and promotion isn't free so do the math hip hop business 101.classic based off of that.you heard the classic 100 songz in between.

I would have rated this a 5 star the first time I heard it, but after a couple of more spins, it's really not good. at all. Sure, Weezy is clever on the songs, but the songs themselves lack color. Even the album cover lacks color, an obvious reflection of the music. It's just bland. Tracks like Mr. Carter and Comfortable sound like basic songs rehashed over and over throughout the decade. T-Pain has shown that he's clearly losing musical ideas on Got Money. I'm sure it was meant to be a summer hit, but it won't be because it just isn't that good. Songs like Phone Home and Dr. Carter have a novelty feel to em, like when your a kid and get that new toy at Christmas, and you don't play with it after a week. 3 Peat sounds like a hold-over from Tha Carter 2, similar but not exact to Fly In and Fly Out. Seriously, there isn't much on this album that makes me wanna listen to it again and again. I'm really shocked! And the MLK stuff is just gettin ridiculous. This isn't someone crazy, it's just someone desperate to reach that Best Rapper Alive status. I know that most people on this site are shameless Weezy lovers so I know i'll get even more hate emails, but I do like weezy. But this...

I forgot a song I was really lookin forward to: Mrs. Officer! Bobby V, what the hell? You sound awful on the hook. I'm not sure if branching out on your own was a good idea. Nathan just tackled probably the hardest album to review ever. A job well done. That last paragraph: I had the same thought and I think it's right. He wouldn't mind dying an early death, and in fact he has said that. As for the album, to me it's a classic, so that's how i'll rate it. I fully understand ppl disagreeing, but somehow this album just does it for me. the range of material makes it one of the best albums i have ever heard. THE ONLY THING THAT IS PREVENTING LIL WAYNE FROM BEING CALLED THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME IS THE FACT THAT HE IS STILL ALIVE.

Although this is the best review there is for Tha Carter III and I generally appreciated and agreed with the feedback, I’M SHOCKED with most of the comments until now! What surprises me is not the general idea of what’s been said but rather how some highlights I found are just being ignored and where the focus is being put instead. I’m talking about the songs as a whole. I’m listening to the instrumental of “TIE MY HANDS” while writing this (…I’m being a little dramatic, lol), and I can’t believe I’m the only one who found it amazing, thus making it on the top 5 of the album… And what about “SHOOT ME DOWN”? Man, the beat just demands you to FEEL something (and that’s one hell of an accomplishment most songs don’t do these days)! I mean, it imposes a mood! And if I have to hear a rapper brag, please do it in the lines of “my picture should be in the dictionary next to the definition of definition because repetition is the father of learnin”. As for MR. CARTER, I see the oddness in the couple but STILL, both delivered marvelously (Jay-Z’s flow is ridiculous!)! Weezy goes "Man, I got Summer hating on me cuz I'm hotter than the Sun, got Spring hating on me cuz I ain't never sprung, Winter hating on me cuz I'm colder than y'all, and I would never, I would never, I would never FALL, I been hated by the season, so @*#$! y'all who hating for no reason". Who else ever addressed the haters with such CREATIVITY? “COMFORTABLE” must have one of the best and most stylish hooks I’ve heard thus far this year. It’s BABYFACE y’all (wikipedia him! Yap, I’m getting sick of Google)!!! If only Wayne’s lyrics on it where as super as on Mario’s “Crying out for me” remix… If only there was not such ridiculous amount of leaks and “Im me” was the closing track making a match with 3peat in the style of “Fly in & Out” from The Carter II… if only tracks like LA LA, YOU AIN’T GOT NUTHIN and PHONE HOME (with its horrible chorus that just reminds me of one I heard on the crude creative process in the booth on the movie “Hustle & Flow”) were replaced by better tracks that leaked back in 2007 (I’m not sayin they are not good, just there’s better)… IF ONLY, then maybe Tha Carter III would be THA classic everyone (and their mamas, right Mravant?) was expecting. No matter what we say though, ONE THING SHOULD BE CLEAR AND UNANIMOUS: even if Tha Carter III doesn’t lay as a classic, it’s unquestionable whether LIL WAYNE has the skill to come up with a classic record nor should we doubt his GREATNESS as someone who dropped a classic album (I guess Nathan said it best on that awesome “brain activity” line). For me (and for Diddy, and more significantly MusicMan, lol), HE DID IT.
PS: MRAVANT, I particularly liked your comment! |

I would have to say that "Tha Carter III" is a great album, maybe even a classic. I says this because it has so much diversity on it, I mean he gives you that realness that Nas had on "Illmatic" with the "Tie My Hands" joint, then he gives you that suicidal feeling that Big gave you on "Ready to Die" with "Playing With Fire". "Mr. Carter" is just a great song, so is "Dr. Carter", The route that Wayne went on this album is so unpredictable, and that's what makes it a classic in my book, because really there is not another album with this much diversity on it.

4.5/5! EXCELLENT REVIEW NATE! I think you might be right as to Lil Wayne Subliminally wanting to die to be a legend. It makes so much sense because he absolutely LIVES hip-hop and he would know that the only way to be a legend is to die early like the other greats. This is a VERY GREAT album! It is definitely all over the place and non-coherent; which makes it not exactly a Classic to me...and there are some tracks that I will skip like the one with Bobby Valentino and Phone Home which is a little too weird for me. The Rest of the tracks are Really solid. Wayne is just all over the place as others have said and the album doesn't have that great flow to it...You never know what to expect next; and that is why Weezy is Weezy I guess. Tha Carter II was also nearly a classic just like this one; but it is missing something to put it way over the top. This is the BEST ALBUM of 2008 EASILY! He is definitely breaking the MOLD of hip hop...I don't even call it Rap anymore what Weezy is doing...I dubbed it BLACK-ROCK (with the help of my babygirl). It's almost like a rockstar type of goosebump feeling you get when lil wayne spits his crazy flows. He is the Greatest Rapper Alive right now and I am just going to wait and see what he does next...but he can rest right now as he has the best album of 2008...Now...I wonder what the sales are going to be like...

Oh yeah, and that "Assassinate Me b*tch" line when he was referring to MLK being assassinated is one of those BLACK-ROCK moments I was talking about in my previous post that gives you the goosebumps! I too can't believe it made the album but it is one of the hottest tracks and lines on the whole album! Sick and Genius at the same time!
