DJBooth Album Review

Thousand of words have already been written in hopes of solving the human Rubik’s Cube that is Kanye West. Why? Why does the most influential artist of our generation so routinely devolve into juvenile self-destruction?  It’s simple, really. First and foremost, Kanye West is a producer – a meticulous, insanely driven, creatively boundless producer. In the studio Kanye is God. He can control every element of his world, adjust every fraction of every note, until the music is exactly, perfectly as he envisioned. But life outside the studio is not so simply mixed and mastered. Awards are given to the wrong people, the wrong questions are asked during interviews, his words aren’t understood as he intended them. And for a man obsessed with producing every second of his life, and the world that orbits his life, those mistakes are unacceptable.

The true shame of Mr. West’s now predictable tantrums aren’t the tantrums themselves – no one here actually cares about Taylor Swift - but that his headline-grabbing behavior so often overshadows his music. No music exists in a vacuum, but Kanye has made it particularly impossible to simply listen to his greatness and leave our opinions at the door. But for the next 500 words, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’re going to forget about Katrina, and his mother’s death, and the fashion internships and the countless other scandals. Instead, we’re going to reduce the world to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy alone. The best album of the year deserves it.

With all due respect to Primo, Dre, Timbo et al, at what point do we start calling Kanye West the best producer alive? I’m ready to start now. Dark Twisted Fantasy is the kind of sonically expansive album hip-hop is usually terrified to approach, but Kanye crosses borders with an osmotic ease, unfailingly managing to create new life forms from the assembled parts. The album’s opening track, the cinematic Dark Fantasy, moves from an angelic chorus to a head-nodding rider and then back again with a seamless grace. But Dark Fantasy is a mere infant compared to the Goliath that is All of the Lights. On Lights Kanye somehow manages to get two opposites, the track’s frenetic, percussive underpinning and its soaring, beautifully simple overlay, to not only co-exist, but better each other. Ironically, the most traditionally “Kanye” sounding beat of the album, the gorgeously soul sampled Devil in a New Dress, is the work of Bink! It can’t be an accident. On Ye’s albums, there are no accidents. Instead, New Dress is a nod to his production past, and a reminder of how far he’s come. For all his Napoleonic vision, I don’t think even Kanye thought he’d be making beats like the electro-dance meets African tribal beats Lost in the World during his College Dropout days. True, Ye has not accomplished these feats himself. From RZA to No I.D. to Jeff Bhasker, other hands stirred Dark Fantasy’s pot,  but part of being great is surrounding yourself with greatness.

I know I wasn’t the only one worried that Ye hadn’t truly gotten his pop-singer aspirations out of his system on 808s, but thankfully Dark Twisted Fantasy finds Kanye turning to his shaky singing abilities rarely. Instead, what we get from Yeezy on this album is a, dare say it, more mature emcee. In the past, despite his success, you could often hear him trying when he rapped. His desire to be accepted as an elite rapper was at times painfully obvious, but here he sounds as comfortable in his own skin as I can remember. The emcee who exploded back onto the scene with Power is able to rhyme angry without losing control, and on Monster he flips between comic punchlines and uppercuts fluidly. It’d be the most memorable verse in recent memory, if Nicki didn’t completely overshadow everyone else minutes later. But it’s on the self-reflecting Runaway that we feel like we come the closest to knowing Kanye as a true person. As off-key as it may be, he lets us hear his true singing voice instead of hiding behind auto-tune, with Pusha anchoring the track with a unflinching verse. From his politically and racially charged rhyme work on Gorgeous to his charismatic flow on the aforementioned New Dress, Yeezy’s never sounded more confident.

Truthfully, finding faults with Dark Twisted Fantasy is like receiving a Bentley as a gift, and then bi**hing that the cup holders are too small, but that’s not to say it can’t be done. Watch me. Most prominently, the same Good Friday monolith that built Twisted Fantasy into a cultural event also robbed it of its surprise factor (a.k.a. it’s “oh s*it!” factor). As promised, the final album has some tweaks, but more than two months after Power first dropped, the sights look familiar. The effect is like running into the hottest girl at your high school five years after you graduated, and she somehow got ever hotter. It’s still impressive, but it’s no surprise. Second, Kanye could literally have gotten any rapper – no, any artist period – in the world to appear on this album, and Fergie gets a full verse on All the Lights? Fergie? Really? Instead of, say, giving Alicia Keys her own section, or bringing in Nas, or put on some unknown but deserving singer,  a woman most famous for her lovely lady lumps gets an entire verse? Really? Really? And last but not least, let the skits go Kanye. Dark Fantasy is too good to pander. I love Chris Rock as much as the next man, but his presence merely turns the otherwise emotionally raw Blame Game into a joke, and not a particularly funny joke.

As I’ve written before, the central paradox of rating albums is not only the cognitive dissonance involved in assigning a numerical value to a work of art, but in instantly assessing an album’s impending legacy. A classic album is one that stands the test of time; that hits just as strong, if not stronger, five, ten, fifty years after its first listen. The impact of Dark Twisted Fantasy remains to be seen, not many will be able to approximate, let alone duplicate, what Kanye’s done here, but for the first time I have no doubt that we’ll still be talking about this album a decade from now. Don’t let it go to your head Kanye.

I was hoping that you would have to dust off the classic button, seeing as it has never been used in the history of this site. All I have to say is that this is honestly one of the greatest albums I have ever heard, and not since before Jay-Z's first retirement has hip-hop been this exciting. Incredible.

Oh sh-- the first classic rating is here! Well, I would have to agree. This is now my favorite Kanye album as a whole, tying Late Registration. There wasn't a single track I didn't like, the beats are spectacular, and Kanye's rhyming might be his strongest yet. If I HAD to name some favorite tracks, they would be "Devil in a New Dress", "Gorgeous", "Blame Game", "Lost in the World", and "Who Will Survive in America". Gotta love Gil Scott-Heron.

This album deserves nothing less. Ive read some people nitpick bout all sorts of things. But i think thats being small minded. Those 'bloggers' fail to see the potential this album has to change Hip Hop as a whole. Kanye truely is a genius. After winning over his critics i hope his fans come thru' for him go out and buy the album.

I'm fairly new to DJ Booth, so let me start by saying that I love the time that you guys put into your reviews. The Booth is a true hip-hop community where all backgrounds and preferences seem to be included and accepted as valid. Props to that.

Great write up for a great album. MBDTF is not only the best hip-hop release of the year, but I would venture to say that it might stand up as one of the best hip-hop albums ever in a few years time. Nobody has ever accomplished what Kanye accomplished on MBDTF, in fact nobody has even had the presence of mind to attempt it. This is innovation at its highest in a genre that often runs scared from the unknown and untested. MBDTF sets the bar for aspiring artists and industry heavyweights alike.

What happened? The year of Drake and Eminem's comeback have currently been overshadowed by Kanye's second classic album (third if anyone counts Late registration.) This was something that I couldn't think most artists could do. live up to the expectations they have received with their debut and maybe some.

Totally agree with the review. In a genre where there is rarely any true innovation, Kanye has pulled out all the stops to produce an album of style and substance.
He must surely go down as one of the greatest ever, he simply hasn't made a bad album.

My Beautiful Dark Fantasy is the best album I have heard in years. Nathan was right when he gave it a 5/5. If you think otherwise, watch Kanye's 30 minute video of his album... see the visuals and listen to the music for what it is--beautiful art.

This is greatness put on disc. Kanye kills it all on this one. I agree that the only real flaws are the 2 minute Chris Rock skit and Fergie, rather than Beyonce or Alicia Keys or Jennifer Hudson or someone else getting on All of the Lights. But it isn't like she ruins the song or anything, she just seems like an odd choice. I'm glad Kanye didn't get everyone and their brother to do a feature on this CD. I'll be waiting for Watch The Throne for Jay Z and Kanye to get everyone they know to do a verse on that CD. Cross your fingers for a Jay Z, Kanye, and Lupe track.

Finally! I've been checking this site everyday waiting for this. As I expected, Nathan gave the album exactly what I expected. This album is a classic. Kanye has a right to be an arrogant ass after this. My top five:

1. Blame Game
2. Gorgeous
3. Runaway
4. Devil In a New Dress
5. All of the Lights

"Truthfully, finding faults with Dark Twisted Fantasy is like receiving a Bentley as a gift, and then bi**hing that the cup holders are too small," haha exactly put. CLASSIC Shit!

Classic album. Chris Rock helped MAKE Blame Game. Bink! killed the production on Devil In A New Dress. All of the Lights is phenomenal. Hell, even the 5 minutes of auto-tune at the end of Runaway is entertaining enough to make it through the whole 9-minutes of the song. Classic album.

The first classic rating and I have to say that I agree. Personally I argue plenty of times with my friends about what a classic album is and means. Many of them feel that a classic album drops every year, however I'm real picky and selective in which I define as classics, and often it is hard to find these past few years. This is probably one of the first albums that I can say might hold this title. Of course a classic is determined in time, but straight through its on point, production wise and lyrically. Ye did his thing, what a comeback.

FINALLY!! I see alot of people admitting to jumping on the classic ban wagon. So I should admit to it as well. I thought Thank Me Later and Man on the Moon 2 were classics. The key word is THOUGHT! This album we'll be the golden standard for years and years to come. This album is what people wanted from Drake, but didn't get. From beginning to end flawless. Kanye West is a mad scientist. And this experiment will definitely get him the respect he deserves. Kanye West thank you for an instant classic!

Not only Kanye killed this shit, this was probably the best production he has ever done... EVER. I was looking at the samples he used to create the album and I was impressed. He truly is a genius. He takes like one or two beats thats layered behind some of these songs and then laces them up together, speeds up as fast as he wants to and creates a classic beat. And on that note I wanna say the skits weren't that bad. Chris Rock in Blame Game was hilairous and infact didn't take away from the song. It just emphasis the fact that the girl wouldve been nothing w/o Kanye. Yeah... MBDTF is a classic album word.

Gotta agree with the masses, this is the definition of dope, hip-hop, down to its roots.

The only thing that disappoints me is the fact that I've killed the songs that he featured throughout his G.O.O.D. Friday's series that he put on the album, I wish he would of threw 13, never heard before tracks.

Saying that though, the quality in production, rhyming, flow, and lyricism is the best I have ever heard throughout an entire album for a long time, and I feel blessed to be apart of this feat.

Thank you Kanye, for making me feel like a kid on Christmas morning again.

This is a BANGER ALBUM! Sick review Nate. He'll definitely win a Grammy or two from this album. The Fusion of genres and lyrical skill is unbelievable for the most part. Now let me tell you all why I didn't give this a 5-star rating like everyone else here. I believe a 5-star album should stand the test of time and the listener should also be able to play the entire album from beginning to end without the urge of wanting to skip a song (interludes excluded). I felt the urge to skip a few tracks, so therefor, I can't give this the elusive Classic rating. I do think it will stand the test of time, but we will just have to see 15yrs from now. The tracks I really liked, I LOVED! I can't even pick a favorite out of the 8 songs I like. Some of the best work from Kanye is on this album, no doubt. Even though the production value and quality is excellent throughout the entire album, that does not mean that the song is going to be loved equally. Taste and opinion is in the ear of the beholder. The tracks that I thought were decent but just not my style were: Monster, So Appalled, Hell of a Life, Lost in the World, and Who will survive America. Lyrically, most of those songs are hot, but they just didn't move me or make me want to play them over again. Everything else is pure Genius!

@*#$! phenomenal album. I didn't listen to the leak and bought the album today. Put it in, played from straight to finish. Just... wow.

There's so many things that you usually would've thought would NOT work. But 'Ye made it work. Again, and again, and again. The entire end portion of Runaway is all autotune and distorted! And it WORKED.

One of the things I most was most apprehensive about this album was how Rick Ross would handle "Devil in a New Dress"- my favourite G.O.O.D. Friday track, and one of my favourites off the album. The amazing production and Kanye brought the best out of the man; he really nailed his part! And Nicki wasn't annoying in the intro to the album, too. Just... wow.

Chris Rock verdict? For me, Chris Rock's bit in Blame Game brings the song down a bit.

Top Six...
01. Devil in a New Dress
02. All of the Lights
03. Lost in the World
04. Gorgeous
05. Hell of a Life
06. Blame Game

The album all flowed out really well. Kanye's perfectionist nature and love for his profession makes him invincible. Only a man with an ego as colossal as him could concoct an album like this. I have so many words to describe this album, but it's honestly all so redundant.

"Now I could let these dream killers kill my self-esteem/Or use my arrogance as the steam to power my dreams."

@Drizzy3000Fiasco Yup, positive it was her. Her name is listed in the liner notes underneath "Dark Fantasy," and it's only her and Bon Iver there. They either re-recorded that or Kanye did some extra work, but either way I agree, it doesn't sound as much as her (trying to fake that accent too), which is a good thing.

No real need for me to jump in here since it seems like everyone's in agreement. Other than to say:

1) Again, love Chris Rock, a skit like that just doesn't feel right on this album.

2) For the record, I didn't actually review Akon's "Konvicted" (that was before I started working for the Booth). This is the first 5 stars in two years or so I've been doing this. The only albums that have come close are Lupe's "The Cool", Dream's "Love vs. Money", more recently Big Boi's "Son of Chico Dusty" and a few others.

Lastly, are we all cool with Nicki Minaj's British narrator leading off the album? I'm actually fine with it.

Alright this is my 2nd favorite kanye album after late registration. I'm not giving this a 5 because of the oh shit factor mentioned above that is gone, plus if you give a 5 to an album, that means all of the tracks deserve a 5, well i don't think monster does, that track felt so out of place, other than that this album was the best gift i ever received in my life.

Loved the album, though I honestly dont hear that 1 massive hit single that every other Yeezy album has had. To me, the album is a collection of brilliant album tracks that hip hop heads will love, but maybe not mainstream America.

Album Of The Decade... I seriously doubt anyone will be able to make a album better than this anytime soon

Great Album And Great Album Review. I Thought This Would Atleast Be A Near-Classic. I Thought The First Classic Would Be A Lupe Fiasco Album. Oh Well. I Thought Monster Was Okay. And Runaway Wasn't That Good Either. Kanye West Was Never My Favorite Rapper. But This Will Definatly Will Be Album Of The Year. 4 Stars.

This is his ninth symphony, the magnum opus.

The virtuosic skill in this album is sheer astounding. Rap aficionado epitomized.

Good album. I am very disappointed that he had the GOOD Friday tracks on the album even though I love them. I am already sick of the album being I have listened to more than half the album for the past 2 months. The skits were a real turn off for me especially the Chris Rock shit and the middle of the Blame Game track. The last skit Survive in America is a joke. Honestly I do not believe this deserves the first 5/5. This is a solid album and will be listened to for a a while Im sure. I will however check back in 3-5 years and see if I still agree with my review or if this album really does stand the test of time.

This album is just a ear orgasm. Seriously and the video...that should just been the album and you had to watch the whole thing to hear all the songs. A move in the right direction for hip hop.

I may disagree with PROJECTTAY, but I feel a good portion of Fans won't like this album. Dark Fantasy isn't like other Kanye albums because the feel good tracks are really heavy for the most part. This album is a masterpiece.

This album is a good album. Classic? No...A classic album you can listen to front to back back to front without skipping songs. A perfect example is "Illmatic". From "Dark Fantasy" to "Devil in a new Dress" it was literally music to my ears. Besides the really long Outro on "All of the Lights" I have a real issue with the Outro of "Runaway". I like this song and thought the production was pretty out of control. The Outro is too long and honestly I find it boring and not really as well constructed as the rest of the track. It kind of felt like an autotuned voice screaming through my headphones. "Hell of a Life" is alright but the chorus was mediocre at best. It's obvious Ozzy Osbourne influenced this hook (youtube "Ironman" by Ozzy if you dont hear it). "Blame Game" was brought down by Chris Rock but not only Chris Rock. That part with the chopped and screwed shit was just weird and in my opinion doesn't really fit with the song. "Lost in the World" is a skippable track, I can only really get through minutes 1-2:20. Before and after that is boring and redundant. "Who Will Survive in America"? Who told Kanye "Yea Kanye I can rock out to this all day" MTDF really only has 11 tracks, 5 of which we all have been listening to for months. I just can't consider an album a classic or as some put it a masterpiece if I have to skip tracks before they end or if the album has any to skip all together. Don't get me wrong I really like this album, I just dont get why everyone is calling it a classic. Are you really going to be listening to "Lost in the World" after the third listen to the album? I respect Nathan's views on the album maybe we just have different views on what a perfect album consists of.

The production was off the chain, if you love to see art and the flow of it through music then I think everybody will love this. His movie is what actually made me like the album even more, the movie was so creative and original. But then at the same time when it comes time to KANYE himself just rapping on the album, I wasn't really impressed. Everybody is also on Kanye's sac and the bandwagon.

Best album of the year. This beats Recovery, Man on the Moon 2, Thank Me Later, Trill OG, Teflon Don and any other album released this year. The old Yeezy is back and every song has amazing production. I like every song on this album. CLASSIC status!!!!

As much as I don't like the Chris Rock skit at the end of Blame Game, it kind of does stick to the script. Kanye ends it with saying "your phone accidentally called me back and I heard the whole thing." and it goes to Chris Rock talking to his girl or ex girl. Could I of gone without it? yea. But it does stick to the script. And the mixed autotune and different voices used in Blame Game was tight cuz it was like Kanye's head where it seemed like the devil in his mind talking and then him trying to talk to his inner devil to try to fix things. I really liked it, but I understand people who don't. I honestly think Blame Game is the best song on there, despite the skit. Classic CD. I don't skip any song or skip even the ends of songs cuz how great the production is. Fantastic.

and Who Will Survive in America was great, just because it is intelligent. Are you surprised Kanye would put that one his album? Listen to what is being said. It is deep and meaningful. When a rapper that is intelligent and is trying to spread something they believe they will put it on their CD (see the first tracks on both of Lupe's CDs and the end of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III). I personally like it.

@ Milkpoisoned

I hope that is a joke. This CD says Parental Advisory on it. That is your first hint it isn't for children. Also the deluxe edition (possible the regular edition too. idk i didn't buy it) comes with several different covers to change them out if you don't like it. Don't take your kids to an art museum cuz art work there is a lot worse then Kanye's cover and it doesn't state Parental Advisory on it.

Most unique sounding album I have ever heard. That is the reason why this album is a classic. The beats are phenomenal. Some sounds that he puts together are just so out there that they sound amazing together

I can't stop listening to Dark Fantasy..."can we get much higher? So High!!!!" so catchy!

I knew i was gonna be seeing the first classic rating on this site when this album dropped. Lets hope J Cole will land himself #2 since the man can't go wrong

Forget Everything I Said In My First Comment. Okay. Kanye West Is One Of The Most Brilliant Artists Out In The Music Industry. And He Is A True Definition Of An Artist. He Can Rap. He Can Sing. He Can Produce His Own Beats. He Can CREATE Music. Really Glad To Here Some Good Music From Kanye West. Its Been A Long Time Since He's Had A Good Album. If I Wrote This Review, I Would Make This Album A Near-Classic Because Of Monster. Monster Was Definitely The Worst Song On This Album. And I Mean The Song Wasn't Good.In My Opinion Though. This Album Is A Near-Classic To Me Because I Didn't Like Monster. All The Other Songs Were Great Though. I Just Don't Think This Album Should Be A Classic Because You Can't Tell If An Album Is A Classic The First Time You Listen To It. You Should Be Able To Pick Up The CD A Year From Now And Still Enjoy Every Song On It. But, Its A Great Album And Everyone Who Loves Hip Hop Should Buy It. Alright. My Personal Top Five Favorite Songs In No Specific Order Are:

Dark Fantasy - Because The Production Was Crazy. The Beat Then The Awesome Chorus.

Gorgeous (ft. Kid Cudi & Raekwon) - Because I Like Raekwon And Once Again The Production Was Crazy. Kid Cudi Did Really Well On The Hook.

Power (ft. Dwele) - The Production Was Great. All The Songs Have A Great Production. Even Monster.

Runaway (ft. Pusha T) - First, I Love The Chorus So Much. Secondly, Kanye Singing And Rapping Was Great. And Lastly Pusha T Had A Great Verse.

Blame Game (ft. John Legend) - I Like John Legend And Kanye West Had Good Verses.

WOW! I cannot believe I came on here to see other people write what I would like to write, and rate how I would like to rate. I am stunned that so many people think that this album is a classic. I am the person who said his next album would be 5 stars, I said it would definitely be the best he ever wrote, I even betted with my friend that it would be better than College Dropout. But, as agreed by my friend, this album is AWFUL!
There are a couple, and I mean a couple of good songs. After listening to his recent mixtape, Power (I think it was called), it was MUCH better than this album. He has a song that goes on about a toast for the douchebags which is RIDICULOUS and I cannot stand to keep listening to it. I think this album had a great build up and I am a huge fan of his work, but this album is like the African Child of his work (lol if you saw Get him to the greek). I just didn't like this one, and I am astonished to see so many people think it's a classic. Sorry, usually I agree with you all. Not this time!

SMH @ the people who have given this CD less than 4 stars. Listen to the lyrics through the whole song and you'll realize what he is saying and the meaning of them. Stop listening to half the lyrics and taking meaning out of those selected lines. Go back to listening to Waka Flocka and Gucci while the people who prefer lyrical greatness (such as Lupe and Kanye) over dumb metaphors, mumbling, and nonsense (such as Wake and Gucci) enjoy this classic album.
