I never hated Gucci Mane, I just didn’t understand him. Every popular artist has a hook, something they do better or differently than everyone else, but if Gucci had a hook I couldn’t find it. His rhyme skills are mediocre, his voice isn’t anything special, he’s not particularly charismatic and his style’s certainly nothing new. So why did I hear “brrrrr” every time I turned on the radio? And then I had an epiphany. Nachos. You know how at ball games they sell those nachos slathered in a cheese that’s only cheese in the loosest sense of the word? They have absolutely no nutritional value, you’ve had them a hundred times, but as soon as you hit the concession stand and spot those rows of nacho boats, glistening with delicious fat, you’re like “f**k it, I’ll take one.” Gucci Mane is to hip-hop what ballpark nachos are to the culinary field. Mystery solved.
Actually, Gucci owes his career to more than just nachos, he’s also hustles hard. Following the blueprint Lil Wayne laid out in ’08, Gucci decided to do a verse for anyone who would let him, slowly but surely ensuring that his mumbled flow became omnipresent and building some serious hype around the release of his third studio album, The State vs. Radric Davis. It seemed like nothing could stop Gucci’s rise to fame, except, ironically, the state; or more accurately, Gucci’s inability or unwillingness to follow parole. So now, as the biggest moment of his career arrives, the most important numbers Gucci will have to memorize will be on the front of his uniform, not the Billboard charts. Unlike T.I. or Weezy, I don’t think Gucci can keep the momentum going over a 12 month prison sentence, but that’s the future. In the here and now we have a big, hot boat of nachos in front of us called The State vs. Radric Davis, and whether or not you choose to eat it depends a lot on how seriously you take your hip-hop health.
Those who either don’t give a f**k or see nothing wrong with occasionally indulging will have plenty to digest on Radric Davis. As long as we’re talking about unhealthy habits, we might as well start with Wasted, a track whose swagger, huge Southern beat and catchy hook is indicative of the album as a whole. Wasted’s actually an alcoholic anthem I could get down to - if my mouth was properly lubricated – if it weren’t for Plies, who submits a guest verse so aggravating it makes Gucci sound like Nas. I’ll take Stupid Wild over Wasted any day, thanks in no small part to an absolutely monstrous beat from Bangladesh, a memorable verse from Weezy F. and a decent contribution from Cam. Replace Gucci with Luda and this track’s a beast, but as is it’s still one of the best guilty pleasure bangers to drop in a minute. What’s more, even the most-hardened anti-Guccites have to admit that Spotlight’s a damn good club track, even if it owes its success more to Urrsher’s always smooth vocals and hypnotic Polow da Don production. I can give credit where credit is due; they can never say that Gucci never made a crossover hit, even if I’m still oddly confused by some of Spotlight’s lyrics: “If she was a prostitute than I would have to pay.” (Um, yeah, that’s a prostitute all right.) From the Ricky Ross assisted All About the Money to the absurdly titled but irresistibly catchy Bingo, Gucci never strays far from his comfort zone, and that’s probably for the best. I don’t want organic blue cheese on my nachos.
Those who can’t stomach the thought of an entire Gucci Mane album won’t regret passing up The State vs. Radric Davis. Edited down this actually could have been a solid album, but at 23 tracks (plus three terrible skits), there’s far too much filler here. Shirt Off might just be the worst song since, well, LOL Smiley Face (coincidence?), and even Keyshia Cole can’t save Bad, Bad, Bad, a track with a great chorus but barely listenable verses. Similarly, I had high hopes for Sex in Crazy Places, another track with guilty pleasure written all over it, but while R. Kelly would have made a song with a title like this a classic, Gucci plus Nicki Minaj plus Trina plus a laughable hook from Bobby V only equals skip. Still, as surprised as I am to find myself writing this, in the right mood I’d pick and choose my way through this album. So the question isn’t how good is The State vs. Radric Davis? The question is, how hungry are you?

Gucci haters everywhere! I'm sure by now you all know I'm a fan and have been waiting for this album for a while and it is what I wanted it to be. A fun album to listen to, an album to bump and once you get through his accent/mumbling you uncover some very clever lyrics. I know it's not for everyone but as a gucci fan I'm loving this album. Also to the reviewer, idk if you got the deluxe version but on the actual cd (at least the non-delxue version on iTunes) shirt off etc aren't on there those are some older tracks. Loving this album and I hope if you actually give Gucci a chance and evaluate his music for what it is you'l like it. I was hating on wayne for a while now but after a friend forced me to listne to No Ceilings while blazed I am now back to being a lil wayne fan lol

@dillon_68:if theres one thing to learn from Nathan's reviews, it is that its not bout jus the album, he also factors in the artist's potential and skill to see if the artist is maximizing it. Jus take a couple recent reviews he did. Jay-Z and Clipse. both those albums r considered by alot of people to be near classic or classic albums. Nathan rated them at
Jay-Z:3.5 Clipse:4 compared to most other hip hop albums these are classics, but Nathan has obviously heard a lot better from them so he factors the artist potential and skill into the rating and it drops it down a lil bit. Same for Chris Brown. Nathan gave it a 2. I remember he said somthin bout he would normally give it a 3 or 3.5 or somthin like that. but he factored in Chris Brown's past and he got a dissapointment. |

Good Review Nathan...but on the other hand some people enjoy ball park nachos, Maybe even with some jalapenos, onions, salsa and what ever else satisfies their taste. Thats the whole point when it comes to music. Theirs is something to satisfy everyone out there. Maybe thats what the comparison should have been.
I understand Gucci might be the worst, biggest, trashiest, most garbage rapper, he might have "killed hip-hop" or whatever sub genre you want to label him as since nothing is really hip-hop anymore it seems, but some people like his music. Anyone can be an artist, anyone can make music, thats the beauty of it. Thats why their are so many different styles and why music has evolved the way it has. This is music of a new generation and people are going to have to accept it, and if they can't so be it. Maybe the people that know exactly what music should sound like should get together, record a cd and then everyone will be happy and declare it a 5 star classic. I do understand that it is hard to give a good review of something not in your musical interest. But if everyone only gave reviews of what they liked and never what they didn't then their would be no reason to write reviews in the first place. From another stand point I do enjoy Gucci Mane and yes not every track he does is the best but that comes from any artist. I did enjoy this album very much, lots of heavy beats, catchy hooks and overall just a fun, stupid-crazy collection of gucci flows that is what makes him who he is. This is a great cd and fans will definitely be pleased. Hollar! P.S. - Its BURR*! |

I love the fact that our members actually a) read the full reviews, b) understand the angle that Nathan takes on his reviews, and c) play thread police when someone forgets a and b.
PS. Gucci is popular for a reason - he makes guilty pleasure music. Not hip hop, but guilty pleasure music. He doesn't (and never has) take himself too seriously (clearly) so neither should you. Take this for what its worth... PPS. I LOVE ballpark nachos. I also love hot pretzels, cracker jacks, ice cream bars, and Lemon Chill. |

As hard as it may be for me to hold up two fronts (the Chris Brown and Gucci reviews) I'll do my best.
@Dj Baer - The Doggfather has a special place in my heart, but his new album's barely made a sound, while Gucci is arguably one of the biggest rappers of the year. In the end reviewing this over Malice in Wonderland wasn't that hard of a choice. Sad but true. (I might be able to fit in a Snoop review next week). @joshL Couldn't have said it better myself. If the New Boyz made an album as good as the Blueprint 3 I'd be blown away, but when Jay Z makes an album as good as BP3 I'm a little disappointed. Just like it's impossible to answer a questions like "what was the better movie, Schinler's List or the Hangover?" without taking into account what each movie was trying to achieve, you can't judge every album on the same scale. You have to take into account the individual artist. At least that's how I roll. @DJFetishP Oh, I love nachos of all kinds (Pinches Tacos around the corner from my house makes some dope carne asada nachos) but you can only get ballpark nachos at a ballpark, just like you can only get Gucci Mane music from a Gucci Mane album. The man tastes the same everytime, and you're either going to like what he's serving or he doesn't, or depending on what mood you're in. And with that I've officially beaten the nachos analogy into the ground. Peace. |

Seriously, Gucci Mane should rename his new album to "Landfill" because it will clearly be the biggest collection of garbage people have listened to all year. It's a fascinating disaster; listening to it, there are times where it feels like you literally have to get them away from your ears. It can be TOO MUCH.
"Bingo" sounds like the song in your head when you're being bludgeoned to death, the whole thing is a nightmare come to life. His slurry mumbly mess packed with strategically placed ad-libs/garbled groupings of words is one of the most interesting things you will ever listen to BUT it is also quite likely the worst. His collection of nonsensical lyrics strewn with typically retarded "punchlines" that are not, I repeat, not, intentionally bad. He's just that dumb. Beats irritate my ears as how long Zaytoven, Drumma Boy, Shawty Redd and Fatboi gonna keep repeating them, and there are eight-year-old rappers who have better flow. There's nothing more unsettling than listening to "Rap" performed by every ig'nant rap fan's favorite manslaughter defendant, Gucci Mane. |

i think coochie mane has become so bad he's good LOL, certainly a model for all other horrible rappers who can afford good beats ahahah.
But all sarcasm aside, i think "spotlight" was a great song, even though Gucci doesn't really say anything(what else is new). I think once you understand that he's not a good rapper you won't commit suicide listening to the album. |

The only way someone would not like Gucci's new album is if your not from the south, or better yet from Georgia. You must have lived or living the life style that he speaks of to even try to give an review on any thing gucci does. Most of gucci's bet work cant even by used by the mainstream population, and all the real down south mixtape heads know this.

@Joshl, Thanks for clarifying that, I understand his logic now. So basically when Nathan rated CB's album 2 spins it was because he expected Chris Brown could do better. Gucci may not be the best rapper, but he got a higher grade than CB because he put more effort into his album, although its still not a good rating.

Most people agree that lyrically, Gucci is below average at best. However, that doesn't mean he doesn't make enjoyable songs. Rapping is more than just putting words together. It's blending those words, whatever they may be, with the music, and using vocal inflections to add more flavor.
The same can be said with NBA stars. It's assumed that you have to be a good shooter, but Jason Kidd was not a good shooter until very recently. But he's a huge star because he does other things, like assists, ball control, etc. I think it's helpful to view Gucci in this light, and not just based on lyrics. This is rap MUSIC, not open-mic. I'll get the bad out of the way first. Too long of an album. Cut out the skits, which I rarely listen to anyway, and you have 17 tracks. Of those, I'd say 10 are very good tracks. I wasn't expecting over half the album to be more than just spin-worthy. Tracks like Stupid Wild, Bad Bad Bad, and Spotlight had me hittin repeat. Those are just examples. But based on that # alone, this album deserves a 3.5 rating. Imma give it a 4. I've warmed up to Gucci because he knows how to make enjoyable music, even if his lyrics are bad. Take Classical. This had me laughing. I enjoyed it. Best Tracks: Wasted (of course) Bad Bad Bad Spotlight Stupid Wild All About the Money Gingerbread Man Kush In My Cologne Worst Enemy Lemonade |

@donjonjon Hmmm...man, I gotta think about that Jason Kidd parallel for a minute...
Gotta disagree. Unlike Kidd, I think that while Gucci could be a solid addition, you can't build an entire team around him. I'd say he's more of a J.R. Smith (Nuggets). You don't want him running the point, but he's totally capable of catching fire, lighting it up for a quarter and getting the crowd pumped with a huge dunk. Anyone got a better Gucci/NBA player analogy? |

^I agree he's more like J.R. Smith or even Shawn Marion. His lyrics, like Marion's shot, r ugly but somehow he always finds a way to hit. But the Smith analogy is on point lol

I'm not saying that Gucci Mane is the Jason Kidd of rap. I mentioned Kidd because he has a pretty obvious huge flaw (shooting) yet gets paid like a real star. He's just an example of my larger point, that you can have a very successful rapper with a huge deficiency. He may not have sold millions of albums but Gucci's everywhere right now, so he's very successful. You can replace Jason Kidd with anyone else who you think more illustrates my main point. Kidd was who popped up in my mind at the time.
I guess all that's gotten through is that I don't watch enough basketball. LOL |

Very solid review. I loved most of the production here but it's a shame that producers gave up some great stuff to a below average rapper. Had Ludacris gotten these beats, this could have been a potential classic. I admit that Gucci has grown on me a bit but that doesn't excuse the awful lyrics. It's okay I guess.
P.S. Nathan, if you choose the albums by importance, why did we get a review of Sha Stimuli's album and not Tech N9ne's? They both came out the same week and Tech sold what must have been 8X as much as Sha (30K in the first week). We also got K. Sparks that week, which is understandable considering he's booth endorsed, but I was really looking forward to that K.O.D. review. lol. Did you ever get to listen to it? Now I feel horrible for rated this 1 star, I need to stop judging artists by their past before listening to the album. I used to hate Gucci, recently I became tolerant of him, after hearing this album I have full respect for him.
This album shows immense growth over the Gucci Mane from the days of Pillz and Go Head, imo. The intro is one of the best songs on the album, when I first heard it I knew that the album wasn't going to be bad. Surprisngly, as I was rating the songs on my iPod while listening to the album, I actually rated 6 songs 5 stars (Classical,Sex In Crazy Places, Gingerbread Man, Wasted, Worst Enemy, and Wasted Remix) that shocked me. Usually if I'm not feeling a song I rate it 3 stars, 2 and 1 stars go to interludes depending on the times. I actually gave nothing 3 stars, only 4 stars which is decent to me. Point blank, I was wrong for my low rating, this album deserves at least 4 stars. Anyone else who judged this album because its Gucci Mane, give it a listen, you may be shocked. Its very quality music. |

I on the otherhand would almost lower my rating to 3 stars.... after listening to the album in its entirety multiple times (some friends wanted to hear it haha) I got really sick of the bass heavy beats with his voice. Nathan said everything I wanted to say. Nothing special about Gucci, if you ask me, Gucci doesn't even deserve to be an artist. His lyrics aren't quality lyrics, ppl that think he's a great artist most likely can't comprehend thoughts very well and are 7 times out of 10 illiterate. I'm saying this out of what I've experienced from relatives and friends that listen to Gucci.
Don't get me wrong I do know some ppl who are smart and listen to him, why I don't know. They say it's the beats but with his annoying voice and the constant onslaught of "Brrr!"s I'd get tired of listening. Call me a hater if you want. It's not going to change my opinion on Gucci Mane. I didn't like him before he was hot, in 2007 and I most certainly don't like him not. |

O.k..I'm back from partying...Now it's time 2 get back 2 business...First of all Nathan how r u going 2 compare Gucci 2 nachos & cheese? Really? That just weird brutha..Second of all, I completely disagree with on the "Shirt Off" track...When this track first came out, this song was gettin serious..I mean SERIOUS radio play...It was basically the anthem!!!! The only song i really don't like is I'm a dog..Other than that, this CD is a classic... The State vs Radric Davis..4.5/5...This review...1.5/5...The question isn't hungry am I..The question is, "R U rating on the review or the album?"

maybe i'm getting older. back in the day this would've been a no limit banger. right now it's just okay though. i was actually expecting better production. if you want something to rattle the trunk this is cool. that's about it though.

Lemonade was fire, Spotlight was hot, Wasted sounded better on Weezy's freestyle, Smooches was Fire (Even if it was left off the album) The Album Burns.
