very very fair review...I enjoyed the album...MINUS Take Care and Crew Love (I REALLY don't see The Weeknd's appeal) Songs like Cameras and Look What You've Done are the reason I became a Drake fan in the first place.

this is on level with ye's beautiful dark twisted fantasy, its just a different genre and two artist who are on differents paths and situation i their careers .

Best album this year sorry J.cole but you disappointed me with the sideline.

This album is miles beyond his debut. I love TML, and I didn't mind the mainstream appeal, but this album has so much more feeling to it. Deep lyricism always wins. And the beats are on point, esp. UGK and Cameras (I'm a sucker for Jon B).

I love this album... I feel like Drake really took care, from his killer emotional and well thought out lyrics to the format that each sing was place it.. everything just flowed as if he was telling you a story. It reminds me of his So Far Gone days... to me Thank Me Now was amazing but Take Care honestly blew my mind.
Im really loving The Weeknd also... his vocals are heart melting in my opinion... all in all a great sophomore album, its was everything I expected and some I didn't.

I can't rate the album because I can't make myself listen to it.
And y'all need to stop comparing Drake to J.Cole, Cole's album was average, but his rapping/writing is a long way better than Drake.
(Now that Cole has got the album off his chest watch out for more upcoming Dreamville projects).

This is why we have Nathan to rate reviews because he isn't going to over hype material that simply falls short of anything spectacular, this was a good listen, but I find little replay value in the album. It's a three star album in my book. Features like Kendrick Lamar make this album a solid first listen. For those referencing J. Cole, I encourage them to check out the artists on his Dreamville label, now those guys are putting out art and real Hip Hop.

Repetitive on most of his songs besides Headlines and Make Me Proud and The Motto. Drake finally seems to fit into Young Money, which is low quality music. He is trying to hard to sound like Lil Wayne. I was expecting to hear something better then Thank me Later.

@90's Soldier Nobody is judging Drake we are judging his album. Which is why people are here to do. If he was trying to become the greatest artist then his lyrics would have such a more powerful meaning. Pac did so by rapping about poverty, ghettos, and struggles people go thru day by day just to get a bite to eat. Immortal Technique is becoming the greatest artist as well by rapping about political and social issues we are all facing. Not just here but in 3rd world countries as well. Drake isnt trying to become the greatest artist he is just expressing himself via his music and wants people to understand him and his circumstances he faced or is facing. I dont think you can take Drakes lyrics about past relationships and heartbreaks will get you to see life in a more different way. Their are terrible issues happening in this world people ignore, is those rappers that dont care to be part of a label and dont care about the salary pay but that do care to get a deeper message across. Drake is talented nonetheless, his lyrics dont come close to great though.

This is a great review. I think this is solid album overall, especially compared to "Thank Me Later". It certainly won't make any top ten lists, but it shows growth and it's all around consistent. Sure, it has its radio songs (ex "Take Care" "Make Me Proud" and "Headlines") but you could tell Drake set out to make an album using the same formula he's been using while executing better. That's what he did.

As for all of the hate the guy gets, I'm just not getting it. Some of you people will complain about anything and everything that isn't "real hip-hop" (whatever the @*#$! that means anymore). I'm not trying to boost this to "album of the year" status by any means (because it isn't) but people are so quick to shit on everything that's in the mainstream or doesn't talk about what they want heard. Guess what? Not everyone wants to hear the same shit in every record.

Bottom line: As a fan of all types of hip-hop, underground and mainstream, I think this is a solid record with some replay value no matter what you lyrical accountants think of it.

I Felt this album was up with the best of 2011
Kendrick Lamar's 'Section.80' & J.Cole's 'Coleworld: The Sideline Story'.

Pretty much in agreement with Nathans review here. I feel like Drake displayed a variety of sounds and sides of his artistry on this album. Not only that, but he did it in a way that feels cohesive. This is what his fans love to hear from him, seamlessly flowing in and out of rhymes and croons. I like that he beefed up the album a little bit to try and give it that epic So Far Gone kind of feel, however it ended up with about as much fluff as So Far Gone had as well (we certainly all could've done without Practice).

I'm not going to go too much into the arguing here, but anyone that's so anti-Drake that they dismiss him from being a hip hop artist is at least a little ignorant and close-minded. I understand that not everybody is going to be a fan, but Drake has proven and continues to prove on quite a few tracks on this album that he can keep up rhyme wise with pretty much any name in hip hop, mainstream or not.

Favorite Tracks: Underground Kings, Headlines, Marvins Room, We'll Be Fine, HYFR, Cameras, Crew Love

This album is not good at all.. its boring, repetitive, and just plain weak.. Its like i heard every song before, nothing new.. Blah!!

Looking at 4 stars threw me off from the door! I disagree with the review and as a Drake fan was Very disappointed by the outcome of this R&b album cause this is NOT a rap album! This was a major step back from his last album, I still think Drake is the best in his class but with albums like this I don't see him holding that title long. Lets start with the good headlines, Marvin's room,cameras, crew love, take take...and everything else is easily forgettable especially "Practice" I hate hate hate that song why take a perfectly good classic song n ruin it like that?! Bottom line Drake is not really a Singer n this album had way to much of him trying to do so..3 stars AVERAGE!

First off, just wanted to say i think this is a very fair review. I've listened to the album from start to finish a few times and I personally really like it. The only thing I wish is that he would rap more. I like his r&bish; songs but I think songs like 'Practice' should not have been on the album. I was really hoping that 'Dreams Money Can Buy' would be on the album or a song like that. Also, I think that another song or two with producer Boi-1da would have helped, I feel like songs he produces for Drake are better suited for him to execute his rapping ability. Drake is my favourite artist not because I think he is the best rapper or anything like that b/c he is obviously not, but I feel like he is that artist that puts out music that I best relate to. Anyways, fav. songs: Headlines, Marvins Room, Take Care (should kill the radio), Underground Kings, Lord Knows (fav song on album), The Real Her, The Ride, HYFR.

took me 4 minutes to get thru the whole thing. I quite like Drake, but I was expecting so much more. nothing for a DJ to play in the club, rip off of Gil Scott Heron aside, and Headlines. Poor, when I compare it to other rappers who sing who have had albums out recently (ie, Phonte) this has no re-spins for me

I can't imagine why anyone would rate this anything less than four stars. Its clear and obvious that Drake put forth the effort and time needed to craft this album. I couldn't find any tracks that I didn't like, although I agree that "Lord Knows" wasn't as great as talked about in Nathan's review. So many great tracks on this album, people need to get out of the "Drakes too mainstream" phase or "Drake's garbage" phase and accept the fact that the man has talent.

Pretty solid album but not as good as Cole World

Im actually a Drake fan since Comeback season, who´s admiration for the young fellow has dropped rapidly in the past 2 years.

Thank me later is alright, it had afew good joints and show potential... with all the features and song writting the kid did for others i thought that sky was the limit and had high hopes for the second album when he had more experience and musical freedom to make an album his own way.

The result, was quite bad in my opinion.... I enjoyed the intro joint... Over my dead body, that was so far gone drake spitting, Headlines is a good track that really grew on me since its release but then it just went downhill from there... people are feeling Lord Knows but its because of the Just Blaze´s Beat.. neither Drake or Ross did anything spectacular with it.
The title track is stupid, in the wrong way... not stupid as in ill!!!
It sounds like something that should have been on a David Guetta album or any compilation by house producers, not okay WTF!!!!

The beats are plain, the singing joints are bad.. Drake can sing and can write some good rnb joints but the ones on this album were crap.
I wish he and 40 had dropped that Drake RnB Mixtape that never came out, so he could make Take a rap only album.

Wayne´s album was crap always, and the best track on it was "Interlude" which he didn't even participate on.

Common and Rick Ross will have the best albums of 2011.

It really is a good album, it has a theme unlike a lot of albums that come out now and the production is very good. A little to much singing for me to really consider this a hip hop album but musically it is still pretty good.

Very good album. Well balanced and the rnb fusion with hip-hop is just awesome. There's no other artist who can do that transition as good as Drake.

I really don't understand why everyone is hating on the RnB aspect of the album, did you not read or hear about the plans Drake had for this album? Just shut up and listen. You don't like it? Fair enough, but don't try and force your preference onto other people. Just say you don't dig the music and move on.

Another thing, Im so happy that Nathan pointed out Kendrick Lamar's verse on Marvins Room. When I heard this verse, I just froze and had to rewind the track at least 10 times. I was in disbelief listening to the lyrical content coming out of his mouth. Unbelievable.

Section.80 is still the album to beat for me. I wonder of Radioactive, Careless World or God Forgives I Dont will do it for me?

The album itself is an improvement from " Thank me later." It fallows the same formula, but executed way better. That being said it suffers from the same issues the last album had. Way to many boring songs that drag out talking about the same topics. Repetitiveness and length make this album drag. Do we really need to hear 8 slow songs dealing with the same issues? No, and the problem is the album last around 80 minutes. Personally thats to long for him not to bring new topics into his subject matter. So for his sophomore album this is a good improvement, but 2 more albums down the road who is really going to care about drake's past relationships or the fact that he made it big after being and actor etc etc. Drake is very talented hopefully he finds new subject matters.

Im confused.. You spend the majority of the review, to end the review saying you thought 3 songs were legitimately good, and then you give it a 4?

My actual opinion of the album is higher, but my score is lower, because it is just chock full of filler. Songs like Practice and Doing It Wrong are just bad versions of other songs in the album. Songs like Make Me Proud, and HYFR, and We'll Be Fine are just attempts to make the album radio-friendly. 99 percent of the time, a radio-friendly album will not be consistent. Also, I originally loved Take Care, but now the lyrics seem sub-par, the Rihanna feature seems unnecessary, and the beat is just taken from a better song.

However, songs like Look What I've Done and Over My Dead Body are very genuine and heartfelt, while songs like Lord Knows and Underground Kings are the songs in which Drake GOES HARD. He can really spit when he wants to, and shows us this. The Weeknd assisted songs The Ride, and Crew Love, are both very catchy and unique. The Weeknd really pushes Drake/40's creativity, I'd like to see them work together in the future.

At the end of the day, there is just too much filler and attempts at radio success for this album to remain consistent. And at 18 songs, Drake really could have trimmed the fat to make a more complete and fulfilling album.

Drake is not talented at all! It's disgusting how the media shoving a guy like this down our throats and everybody is taking the bait and believing he has something to offer...There are hundreds of artists that could rap and sing this guy under the table...He does neither of those good and I agree that his subject matter is just laughable...His A&R's just told him to pretend to be a cast member of The O.C. Horrible.

Fair review indeed. It took me a while to properly get into this album, however over a dozen listens I am convinced this is a great album for a rookie.

Though, there are some great tracks on this I feel some features needn't be placed for instance Crew Love - like others not feeling the appeal of The Weeknd.

For this to be a proper sophomore album Drake needs to be speak more of the world around him as a jump or reach greater depths. For him to fulfil his most potential he needs to reach out across the world - what I'm saying is not come across so selfish and listen to my story.

Though the mainstream appeal is not as up'ped in the ante as TML there is some potential in this.

To start off with the 'disgrace to hip hip' thing thats being said - never once did drake ever come out & say 'ayee imma be a hip hop star , imma keep hip hop alive , imma hip hip artist , etc . ; its YOU people that are putting him to that . Drake has out out some songs that can be called 'hip hop' but in reality people see that lil wayne isnt cutting it at keeping hip hop alive so everyone turns to drake & puts the pressure down on drake to do so .

Second , 'not talking about real world issues' - i dont see that as a positive or a negative . How many of the number 1 hits are talking about real world issues or politics ? The only one thats done that occasionally is Lupe Fiasco . & the times that he does so , its not recognized nor a number 1 anywhere . So if songs that do address those things dont get credit , whats the point ? Music is meant to express yourself , thoughts , experiences , or to fave fun really . Noone ever made the rules of music stating that everything needs to be about politics , real world issues , etc . There is so much more i have to say about this but im just going to continue on .

Three , the comparing to old rappers or rappers that have died , or not in the business anymoree - you cant stay stuck on the past & expect that everyone needs to sound like the originals or that tupac & biggie should be the only ones being listened to . Yes they both had their share of good songs but , i say this with the most respect & r.i.p to them (amen) , they cant make music anymore . They were good in their timee & now its drakes game really . Alot of people dont want to expand their horizons because they grew up listening to these people or whatever the case may be & their to afraid if change im guessing . Forth , all this 'wanna be lil wayne' crap . Yes , lil wayne gave him the boost to fame . Yes , lil wayne has helped him with stuff . Drake looks up to lil wayne . Hes not a wanna be . There both to very different people really . They both have very different styles of music . & drake is more diverse with his music . You dont know weather your going to get a slow love song , an upbeat catchy song , an all out rap song , an extremely lyrical song , or a song thats so catchy yet so lyrical , or , well you get the point . You know what to expect outta lil wayne everytime . & if we the people have managed to notice that , then why wouldnt drake ? If he wanted to , he could be lil waynes clonee , on top of the fact that their so close . Yes lil wayne has had his punch lines , but in comparison , drake is more lyrical .

Well to say , drake is drake . He has changed over the years . & it shows in his music . Hes getting better . Really , you notice in different sites reviews the bias-ness that their is . The authors that write the review that enjoy more of the 'dope beats' or more faster pase tracks , give the slow tracks bad credit & give them bad reviews . & give the faster pase tracks loads of credit & boast about them etc . The authors that enjoy more slower pase tracks , wont give credit to the faster pase tracks . Drake is extremly lyrical & doesnt get enough credit . & ive noticed that most of the drake haters tend to be the ones that grew up only listening to eminem , tupac , biggie , jay z , kanye west , etc . Dont get me wrong , they are all great aritsts , but they are afraid of change , or allowing someone new into the circle . Eminem , jay z , & kanye west have all worked with drake & said they see the talent . If legends can see it , why cant some of the public ? Take Care was an amazing album . Shot For Me - 4/5 , this song address his ex's inna catchy way & it has really grown on me . Its very laid back & ralaxing

Headlines - 5/5 , this song just about did it . I know a couple of people that dont like drake yet i catch then often singing the hook 'they know , they know , they know' . Which means the song will get to you . He went in on this one & really came out lyrically . Even addressing the trash people say about him .

Crew Love - 3.9/5 , the weekend is extremly vocally talented . This song really does show respect for the OVOXO crew . This song wasnt as lyrical as it could have been but did have some memorable lines .

Take Care - 4.5/5 , this track gave an amazing twist to dealing with someone elses heartbreak that your trying to fix . It was upbeat & catchy . He out a nice twist to Gil Scott's "I'll take care of you" .

Marvins Room - 4/5 , it was very catchy for a what people call 'drunk dial' song . It addresses the complicated relationship between him & a past fling . Its a quite entertaining track .

Underground Kings - 5/5 , in this track you hear drakes more laid back , yet cocky , yet feirce side . The laid back side comes in when you recognize him acknowledging the fact that he is a big thing right now . The cocky side comes in when he talks about how much of a big deal he is & the fierceness comes in when it all comes togetheer on one great beat & the rhythem to the entire thing . Very lyrical .

Make Me Proud - 3.9 , this song had an amazing beat but wasnt as lyrical as it could have been . Its very catchy though & you do walk away with it stuck in your head . The hook seemed to be the best part . Although i do admit drake & nicki did have some good lines at points .

Lord Knows - 4/5 , this song really did have an amazing beat to it . Was very lyrical to & had some good vocals

Cameras - 4.5/5 , i really did love this song . And i absolutly loved the vocals done by jon b . I dont know why , but it really gets to me

Doing It Wrong - 5/5 , those who say that this song was garbage , are garbage . The touch that Stevie Wonder gave to it really made this song amazing . This is one of those songs that gets to you . Its emotional yet lyrical . Absolutly beautiful .

The Real Her - 5/5 , this 'part 2 to housatlantavegas' was absolutly amazing . Couldnt have done better . Lil waynes verse didnt do much for me . He really didnt try on this one . Andre 3000 verse was good but its given to much hype . It isnt THAT good . But this song really was amzing .

Practice - 4/5 , i found this song to be very seductive . It gave a nice twist to 'back that ass up' by juvinille . & did have its catchy moments . It wasnt the absolute BEST on the album but i think those who say it was horrible are stupid .

The Ride - 3/5 , i really wasnt that much a fan of this song . It was averagee in my opinion .

Look What You've Done - 5/5 , another one if my favoritees . It was telling an entire story & you feel more in touch with drake & his road to stardem & life struggles . Couldnt have been more perfect .

HYFR - 4.5/5 , i enjoyed this song alot . The way that drake picked up speed in his verse makes this song rememberable . The hook , in which they restate questions that they've been questioned with . Which is another memorable part of the track .

We'll Be Fine - 5/5 , another favoritee . This track has a killer beat & memorable lines . Lyrical . Its very catchy & i enjoyed it very much .

The Motto - 5/5 , this song couldnt have been better . This beat was great & had some great lines . One of the most memorable 'oh , my , god , becky , look , at , her , butt , tunchi'

Like it or not , drake is going to stay around for a while . Right now he is one of the biggest in the game . Weather some see it or some dont . Bottom line , hes making the money , getting the girls , buying what we wish we had , & having fun with what hes doing . People posting bad reviews or leaving insulting comments or anything else haters do , isnt stopping him from doing all of that . Take Care really was a great album . It took me a really long time to do this review, even though I had the album leak about a week before it dropped. Now that I've listened to the album at least 10 times all the way through, I can safely say that this is a 4.5-star CLASSIC album that will continue to be played for years and years to come. This album has a taste of everything for everyone, for almost every different situation or mood that can come about in life. These are the types of albums that 10yrs from now you can break out of the closet and just put it in. There are only about 2 tracks that I will fast forward out of the whole bunch, and its not because they are bad songs, but just because I've played them to death. This is a great overall album and I continue to be impressed with Drizzy's style, flow, and musical abilities on this album. I'll be bumping this for a while... Great album and almost perfect...

Pretty good album. I didn't like Crew Love though. Drake tried to get all genres in this album. He got pop-ish radio style in Take Care. Rap in the Motto. And some R&B in Doing It Wrong and Shot For Me. Solid 4 stars.

1. First off this review nails it with the fact that drake is simply the face of his generation, and forgive me if I'm wrong but what is lyricism is not to be the voice of your generation. You can't be a great lyricst if no one listens to you, I've never understood this, with every other aspect of life you have to be at an elite level to be even considered good i.e. no one says some street baller is the best player of all time, we go for the bigger names that have proven themselves on the bigger stage, kd lebron kobe etc. So why is it people think they can label someone the best of that genre when 90% of the people who listen to that genre haven't even heard of them. I'm not saying its fair, or that sales mean your good, but ya'll need to stop with labelling this underground hipster movement in rap as real hip-hop. Music evolves, accept that right now, this is what people are listening to this is what the masses in hip-hop bump to, this is what as you say speaks to his generation and therefore this is true lyricism and five star hip-hop.

You know I love how you broke down the three topics because its very true, that is the basics of his music but, and here's where its gonna get really unpopular, I could break down every hip-hop star just like this. Jay z's are a) i came from the hood, upbringing was tough they tryna keep me down cause of it but i made it b) i'm so in this co-operate world i own the part of the nets make mad money have nice shit c) these young new rappers need to learn i'm the man. Eminem a) shit was tough growing up, i have a daughter and im a bad father b) i wanna kill kim i wanna kill my mum, but i still love them, i am super complex and deep, life is hard being poor and being rich. c) my flow is untouchable just listen you can barely sink in what i'm saying i'm real hip-hop. kanye a) my mum died i miss her, but i'm super bad ass b) I am above everything else in this world i am god. Hell this will get super hate i know but break down 2pac and its, i'm ganster but intelligent, grew up rough and live this thug life, i have an emotional side at times but i'm really bout this thug shit, also life is unfair.

Don't take my word for it, send me examples to prove otherwise, I don't mean some rant with no points, send me specific songs please and tell me what the songs topic is and why it is real, so many people ride on these old school rappers saying they were real and rapped about real shit. I ask what was this real shit, and well people go quiet i listen to biggie and pac and nwa and wu-tang to ll to roots and i'm just tryna understand where this "real" rap is. So help me out, point me out to the specific song and verse.

I don't know what people go into music expecting? maybe they think a good song will cure HIV or cancer? Maybe it will make minorities equal? hell maybe it will raise superman who will come and save the world? People look for an escape out of their mundane lives and think music can make the change. No its 4 minutes, its one track music is entertainment, it won't cure anything or heal the world, it will only entertain. People need to focus on how to take care of their lives instead of looking for something "real" in a 4 minute track, you want real? you want knowledge and bigger topics? good read a book, read many books. Watch news shows, not dr phil or ricci lake or oprah watch some intellectual shit, watch fareed zakaria's show and several others on CNN. But music is entertainment so don't complain when someone release an album that quite clearly as you say entertains and engages his audience, as the sold out world shows and multi-platinum albums prove, people enjoy listening to what drake puts out, you may not, but that your opinion and that doesn't stop it being lyrically, sonically or in any way as a project any less great.
