DJBooth Album Review
America has the attention span of a 5-year-old boy…with ADD…who hadn’t taken his Riddlin in months …and just ate an entire tub of ice cream, so it should come as no surprise that we’ve already moved on from the Chris Brown controversy that completely engulfed the music and pop culture world way back in 2008. Make no mistake, Brown wasn’t involved in some mere “scandal” – he did brutally and criminally assault Rihanna – but in the time since his last album, Graffiti, dropped there’s been enough Lady Gaga and Charlie Sheen and 50 Cent moments to force Breezy’s crimes into the recesses of the popular consciousness. So while some will undoubtedly refuse to ever re-embrace the one-time Prince of Pop, for the most part his new album F.A.M.E. arrives with a clean slate for Mr. Brown. Well, perhaps the slate isn’t completely clean, but it’s not completely dirtied either.
As R. Kelly has proven over and over and over again, a lot can be forgiven, and forgotten, with a catchy hook. Enter Deuces, a single that crosses off every box in the hit song checklist. The beat’s minimalist, the melody’s in-your-head-stickable and there’s even an attached catch phrase – in other words it’s exactly the kind of song radio will play 197 times a day. (Once they gave Tyga and Kevin McCall the boot, but that’s a story for another time.) More than simply providing a platform for CB’s “comeback,” Deuces also signaled his move further into the hip-hop world. While there have always been hip-hop elements in his work, F.A.M.E. marks a deeper commitment to rap than we’ve ever heard from Brown, starting with Look At Me Now. On Look At Me Chris’ lyricism makes Waka sounds like Nas, but his flow isn’t as bad as I had feared and while I don’t know a single serious rap fan who doesn’t just start the track with Busta’s vintage verse, the point’s already been made – Breezy’s now rhyming on records with heavyweights. From there the rap continent makes sporadic appearances on F.A.M.E., with Wiz contributing a verse to the aggravatingly auto-tuned Bomb, Game jumping in on the dance-floor ready Love The Girls and Ludacris throwing in an offering on the unfortunately titled Wet The Bed. Hip-hop has always been more willing to forgive transgressions – hell, we could have a rapper-only prison at this point – so it’s no wonder that Brown found a way back into the game via hip-hop.
As much as us hip-hop heads may want to believe the world begins and ends with a mic, true stardom, the kind Brown once enjoyed and Rihanna still commands, means winning over the world of pop, and on that front he’s still got a ways to go. Of course grabbing the immaculate Justin Bieber for Next 2 You should help things, and while I personally won’t be listening to this song again, I’m not exactly in the 13-year-old demographic the song’s aimed at. Next 2 You and the retro She Ain’t You aside, the rest of the album follows the prevailing trend and pushes pop into the clubs on records like Rock, Paper, Scissors, which has a nice beat but contains one of the worse hook’s of all-time (“You paper, scissor rock my world baby”) and the purely Euro-house Beautiful People – they’re going to love this one in the clubs in Amsterdam. It’s an easily enjoyable formula he repeats again on Oh My Love and others, but there’s nothing that truly stands out, and as hard as he may try, particularly on the sugary Should’ve Kissed You, F.A.M.E. simply doesn’t contain a mainstream hit on the order of (office wedding song) or (other hit), and if Breezy truly wants to get back on top, he needs another (song).
All this means that F.A.M.E. feels a little schizophrenic, one minute Brown is f**king big booty b**tches with Game and the next he’s singing sweet nothings alongside the Biebs, but this album isn’t about a unified artistic vision. This album is about keeping Brown relevant and making the musical man child marketable again, and on that level it’s a moderate success. He’s still got a long way to go before he regains his previous stature, and for the time being Trey Songz has buried him as the young future of R&B, but right now Brown just needs us to remember who he is. Fame is a hell of a drug, and without it, Brown’s just another junkie looking for a fix.

Wow, someone is obsessed with CB... it's his job to write these reviews...
At least take the formality to express your conflicting points in a more civilised manner. It's also slightly idiotic to comment on a site that writes opinionated reviews; you're only belittling yourself to write on a site devoted to this as such. I kinda dig this album; innocuous dance tracks mostly, and pretty diverse...but yeah, what's with the Good Morning America thing? I think the media should stop giving him a hard time about the Rihanna thing... Overall, I'm happy he took the general consensus' advice and stopped addressing Rihanna in his music. He's evidently moved on. |

That rant kinda reminds me of that crazy transsexual Britney Spears fan from youtube. HA! Anyways, screw that douche chris brown and all his rage. His music is forgettable and he'll probably end up going postal and killing all his fans at a concert somewhere.

I listened to the album, and it was solid. For what it's worth though, Trey Songz latest is still gonna get my spins over this.

I purchased this album the day it came out, and having bought all 3 of his previous albums, this one is possibly the best along with his debut.
My picks: Up To You, She Ain't You, Beg For It, Bomb, Paper Scissors Rock, all the singles. Trash: Next To You |

Ah Chris Brown, guys you have to admit this album was incredibly disappointing. It just doesn't do anything for me, very inconsistent. The songs on the album are ok, but nothing more. There are no tracks (apart from 'look at me now', courtesy of Busta of course) that make me blast them out of my car. The album basically doesn't have a WOW factor, however corny that sounds.
Nathan, I laughed pretty hard at the comment about Chris Brown making Waka sound like Nas on 'Look at me Now', couldn't have put it better myself. Great review as well, spot on with all of the comments. |

Damn, I thought the hook on "Paper, Scissor, Rock" was pretty lame as well, but that song is still one of my top favorites on here. I agree with the rating. In my opinion, this wasn't really that great of an album. Brown after all his public displays really has shown a bit of growth within his music, but then again, after hearing "F.A.M.E." one can only question as to whether or not he is on the right track.
There were tracks that I just couldn't take seriously and there were tracks that I thought were fantastic. Unfortunately, the majority of the tracks I liked weren't as abundant as I would have liked. Overall my top 5: She Ain't You, Paper, Scissor, Rock, Deuces, No Bulshit & Look At Me Now. In the end, Chris Brown is still one of my favorite artists, and one bad album won't really change that. The man can sing and dance, but is he the next Michael Jackson as some claim? I don't really think so, but then again, who knows. I would in fact listen to this album again, just with a few skips here and there. P.S. "Bomb" was the biggest and most irritating track on this semi-decent album. I |

This was a bad review, completely biased! Lost a lot of respect for Dj Booth. Considering CNN and USA Today gave great remarks and also "People Mag" gave it a 4/4. Well I must say, I completely and 100% disagree with this and agree with every other review. Chris's best album, never thought he would top the first one and he did that! Chris is the most talented in the game, although every day many people spend their time, failing, at trying to stop his success, he'll keep rising. Classic album!

@SJD
You claim that this review is completely biased and cite other ratings to attempt to prove that, but you should look around more. Maybe you are the biased one, or maybe you are both biased. Also there are just as many magazines/reviewers that gave this album a worse review or a review very similar to this review. Examples: Rolling Stones (3/5), Slant Magazine (2.5/5), The Independent (2/5), LA Times (2.5/4), The Washington Post (mixed), NY Times (mixed), and All Music (3.5/5). All of those ratings are very similar to the review that Nathan S. gave, so you can't simply say that his review is biased. |

Better watch what you say before a TV get's thrown at your head Nathan S.
Chris Brown reminds me of that kid in middle school when you played a game in gym. He would always be whining and crying when things didn't go his way. And all you wanted to do was tell him to shut up and stop being such an little @*#$!. And just a little reminder that Busta is one of the best of all time. |

Always been a big CB fan, but I felt this album was probably his weakest to date.
Its quite inconsistent, a mix of vintage CB, some average formulaic R&B and just some straight up trash :( My picks; 1 - Yeah 3X 2 - Look At Me Now 3 - Dueces 4 - Look At Me Now 5 - Bomb |

decent ALbum and since it is about the ALbum im gonna keep it short. and am i the only think he sounded a little retarded when he kept emphasizing the AL in album.
1. Deuces - it was bangin a few months ago but im kinda sick of it now 2. Up To You - very forgettable 3. No BS - favorite song from the mixtape and im glad he used it on the album 4. Look At Me Now - i think he tries to hard when he raps but the beat is sick and busta and weezy kill it 5. She Ain’t You - very catchy song and it will probably be a hit mostly because of the sample 6. Say It With Me - doesnt sound like CB at all but decnent 7. Yeah 3x - already released as a single, song has no depth but is good to listen to 8. Next To You - very very surprised i thought i would hate this song but it wasnt the disaster that i thought it would be 9. All Back - a heart felt song that nobody will probably take seriously because of what he did 10. Wet The Bed - change the damn title because this is pretty good song 11. Oh My Love - typical pop song 12. Should’ve Kissed You - you expect me to beleive this comming from a guy whos is tatted from head to toe? 13. Beautiful People - feel good song 14. Bomb (feat. Wiz Khalifa) - odd song 15. Love Them Girls (feat. Game) - cant compare to their first coalbo from exclusive (nice) 16. Paper, Scissors, Rock (feat. Big Sean & Timbaland) - song had so much potential but failed in the end 17. Beg For It - at this point i realize that chris is bipolar 18. champion - one of my tracks |

I was expecting more. It's that type of album that sounds like it was done just to be done. It feels to me like it was done in a hurry just to get some new music out there. This is actually lame compared to Trey Songz' "Passion, Pain & Pleasure" or "Ready". I liked Graffiti more.
The only songs that I dig are "No Bullshit" and "Up 2 You". "Look At Me Now" ain't bad either... it's radio friendly. |

this was a good album! I can listen to this the whole way thru it gives a good mix of rnb (dueces) and pop (yeah 3x) which he does both pretty well. Next time im hoping for a mature straight rnb album from him (ie: confessions), but somethings tells me he's a long way from that he's still chasing the pop crowd.
My fav's: All Back, No Bs,Wet the bed,She aint u, oh my love, beautiful people |

As always, it's impossible to write about Chris Brown without people either screaming at you because you didn't say it was the greatest album ever made, or because you didn't say it was a complete pile of garbage.
That review above is about the most balanced, unbiased piece of writing I could possibly do. If you're really that worked up about it, I'd urge you to look at your own biases. And I can't resist...shout out to Chris B Lover4 Lyfe, who apparently registered and made his/her first and only comments on this site just to tell me I suck. I'm actually kind of flattered. |

I agree that there's too much of this love/hate or pro/con Chris Brown fight goin' on. Why all of that when it's all about the MUSIC??
Anyways, I def am feeling Nathan's review; not too great, not too bad. I kinda feel like this is a lot more better than some people deem it to be, but that's prob because I've been hooked on to his songs for awhile now. It's so much better than Graffiti, but sadly isn't near Exclusive's level. A lil too much dance tracks, would've been sick if he brought in something similar to the stuff in his mixtape w/ Tyga. Top 5: She Ain't You, Look at Me Now, Up 2 You, No Bullshit, Wet the Bed |

This CD has some really good songs. There should definitely be at least a couple of more songs makin moves in radio world. My favorites are "She Ain't You", "Say It With Me", "Oh My Love", " and "Beautiful People." Obviously all the songs that have already hit radio are great, except I agree that maybe "Deuces" is a little too played out at this point to be included. The only songs I really didn't like were "Next 2 You" and "Bomb." Chris Brown has gotten better, but I still think he's inconsistent on his quality on slower R&B songs. I was impressed with songs like "No BS" and "Wet the Bed"(although thats probably the grossest title for a song ever), but not so much on "All Back" and "Beg For It." Despite the fact that I believe it has a lot of good songs, I seriously agree that the severe lack of cohesion and togetherness on this CD is annoying. I just can't give a high rating to a CD like this. I would never be able to listen to this all the way through and not skip like half the album. Its so scrambled in terms of theme and subject matter. Definitely agree with Nathan calling this album "schizophrenic." I would definitely say that the 'Exclusive' album was better as a collective album, although this one is still better than 'Graffiti' any day.

I do like CB'S as an Artists, I thought this album to me was a step up from his last, do think he has a lot more hits on this one, and my Fave song on here has to be "BOMB' i just think him and wiz made a good song and ive seen u guys rip this one but i can see big things fot it...but CB as a person still has a lot of grown up to do as read about what happen at GMA!! i dont wish nothing on him as many do but i do think he needs good people around him...keep making good music Chris and i'll keep buying ur records.

Despite everything that has gone on in the past couple years with Chris Brown, he still truly is talented. Plus, the new discovery of his rapping ability. This album in my opinion is his most consistent yet, maybe not his best, but I can listen to this whole album through without skipping any tracks and I just can't get enough of Yeah 3x!
