If only Busta Rhymes was an athlete, his decline would be much easier to explain. Athlete’s inevitably get old: ligaments tear, knees get weak, the body gives out. If only Busta Rhymes was an athlete, his decline would be much easier to explain. Athlete’s inevitably get old: ligaments tear, knees get weak, the body gives out. But hip-hop is more mental than physical: as long as the mind stays sharp, a rapper could spit until his nursing home days (though at that age he’d probably be spitting pudding). So how do we explain Busta’s slow and gradual disintegration from hurricane-force microphone destroyer to “that guy who did that Arab song with the T-Pain sounding dude”?
Don’t forget, there was a time when Busta Rhymes was arguably the most creative man in hip-hop, a time when he held the entire rap game in check – woo ha! – while America begged him to give us some more. Then, and it seems like Pass the Courvoisier was a turning point, Busta took a decidedly more commercial turn. The former leader of the new school began to water his music down, a trend that’s unfortunately continued on his new album, Back On My B.S.. Fans who only know Busta from the Touch It era should rightfully enjoy Back On My B.S., but for those of us who grew up listening to the mad rapper’s schizophrenic flows, Busta’s latest effort will be just another opportunity to pull out that old Scenario tape and ask nostalgically, remember when…?
Now I’ve got nothing against making money, especially in this economy, but did it have to be Arab Money? I’ve got so many problems with this track it’s hard to know where to start. First, Busta’s flow is anemic by his standards, plus the lyrics only occasionally make sense: he apparently doesn’t read the news because Arafat’s been dead for five years and taking “trips to Baghdad” isn’t exactly a good idea. Second, can some Arabic speaking member of the DJBooth family tell me if the hook’s actually sung in Arabic, or is it just gibberish? My money’s on gibberish. As long as we’re on the subject, it’s good to see Ron Browz again, but he’s too good a producer to resort to knockoff auto-tune tricks. Speaking of which, the real T-Pain shows up for the slowly pounding Husler’s Anthem ’09. If this was almost any other rappers’ track I could shut up and enjoy it, but for the great Busta Rhymes, Hustler’s Anthem is nothing short of lazy.
Thankfully, at times Busta does indeed get back on his bulls**t, starting with the guttural Wheel of Fortune, a cut featuring Busta returning to his constantly shifting rhyme style, with more than a couple references to his classic verse on the aforementioned Scenario. As amusing as it is, Wheel of Fortune was intended as more of an intro than a full-fledged banger. That’s why I’m a bigger fan of the offbeat I’m a Go and Get My…, a track that transforms a street quote into a hook and recaptures some of the Busta’s boundary-breaking magic. Hell, I’ll even take the island-themed Kill Dem, a Neptunes-produced track that allows Busta to slip into his Jamaican patois, or the concrete-hard Respect My Conglomerate, even though Busta is arguably only the third-best rapper on his own track (well done Weezy and Jada). Ultimately, tracks like Go and Get My and Kill Dem are easily Back On My B.S.’s high points, and honestly, they’re not all that high.
Let’s get back to the original question; what happened to Busta? Why is Back on My B.S. so disappointingly average? We may never know for sure, but my guess is that about five years ago Busta made a conscious decision to change his focus from making great music to making successful music. That’s the only way to explain how a track like the quasi-house World Go Round gets on the same album as the formulaic Don’t Believe Em and the undeniably dope Decision. Busta tried to make an album everyone would like – and buy – and in the process only made an album no one will love. If Busta Rhymes was once the Michael Jordan of rap, we may now be witnessing the Washington Wizards portion of his career. When Busta’s deservingly inaugurated into my imaginary Hip-Hop Hall of Fame and the montage video of his career is playing, I seriously doubt it will feature any Back on My B.S. highlights.

The original version is gibberish, but the remix version contained a hook that was actual phrase:
Bismill?hi r-ra?m?ni r-ra??m. Al ?amdu lill?hi rabbi l-'?lam?n" Translation: "In the name of Allah (God), most gracious most merciful. All Praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. |

Right on, Nathan. Right on. Any loyal follower of rap can vividly remember the times when Busta Rhymes contributed to a whole new dimension of hip-hop in the mid to late '90s, becoming one of the most animated figures and energetic performers to ever pick up a mic. It's too bad Busta exchanged his game-changing creative juices for auto-tune hooks and disposable singles, because after watching the video of Preemo and Pharrell wildin' over Busta's return to his roots, I too had my hopes up.
"Back on my B.S." is surely Busta's most mainstream-influenced album to date, and while a couple of songs had their bright spots, the large, and I mean LARGE, majority of the project was 40+ minutes of nonstop boredom. I was disappointed to not see some of Busta's most promising tracks like "Don't Touch Me" and "We Made It" on the final track list (maybe that's why XXL gave this album an XL two-three months ago?). Everything from the beats, to the rhymes, to the big name features were rather generic and expected. After all the things Busta has accomplished in his career, I don't understand the need for him to go down this route. It's like he's putting himself on the same level as these countless newcomers who are diluting the industry. Pretty much "B.O.M.B" was doomed after it's fourth push-back. |

The last two Busta albums has led me to the conclusion that Bus needs to have an album with just Scratch producing. They have a good vibe together. like Jordan said "Don't Touch Me" and "We Made It" not being on the cd hurts it a lot. Just because the people want bs like Brownz and Wayne (when he's half assing it) don't mean you give it to them. I want the good vibe Busta, not this street thug version

I'm not going to rate this album because after Arab Money (and yes Young Son is right), i've become completly bias towards Busta. I have know faith left that he can pull himself up, even tracks like wheel of fortune don't pull through so if your fan of old school Busta I recommens NOT buying this (but thats just me).

K, let's be real about this situation for a second. Maybe I have too much faith, but Busta to me will always be an artist I can depend on for SOMETHING. Albums, maybe not anymore, but have you heard some of the leaked tracks not the album, tracks like "Cut From A Different Clothe", his guest verses? Really? Busta is a @*#$! beast and it's undeniable.
Is this album really good? Uh, nope. Most of the songs reach the climax in the chorus with the production and hook blowing up, then things slope down on the Busta verse; NOT a good thing for an artist like Busta Rhymes. I would've liked this album as just straight Busta, nothing else, for some tracks, which is sad. So I'm with DJ Serious Bidness. Album, not so good. Busta? Damn straight. Just listen to his verse on "Don't Believe 'Em"... Now, there's nothin' you can do to stop a n-gga from within With the hunger of a lion I secure another win (HEY!) So passionate, you might even misinterpret it as arrogant I'm goin' in! (HEY!) I'ma make the world feel my pain While I'm showin' you my muscle and I hustle through the game And even though they leave us in the hood like we ain't ish We ain't got nothin' but EVERYTHING to gain Look, even if a motherf-cker try to pop me I'm so BLESSED - do anything that you could do to stop me Now I'm climbin' up the ladder and I'm jumpin' at the top You might wanna call me (ROCKY) See there's more of us (UGLY) You don't really wanna war with us (TRUST ME) So glorious, that we from the bottom Still we victorious (HUG ME) Then there's what I can easily say is the most beautiful song I have in a while, "Decision". Nothing can describe it, just listen. Top Six; "Decision", "Don't Believe 'Em", "Sugar", "We Miss You", "World Go 'Round", "Respect My Conglomerate" 3-3.5/5 Album, not so good. Busta? Damn straight. |

Although a big change for busta, I felt like he just did waht he wanted to on this album. Beats were unique and it kept me listening. Beautiful is an amazing song and I really enjoyed World Go Round too. This album was just Busta having fun with a few emotional joints.

There was a time when popular hip-hop (and Busta) was all about progression and creativity. Now it and Busta seem to be all about conformity (save for a few talented individuals who I hope will soon turn the game upside down.) The album for any other rapper would be solid, so I think it's ufair to rate it any lower than average. The expectations were set so close to greatness that we were spoiled, I guess. There are some enjoyable tracks on here, but it left me wanting more.

There is not an option for a 3.5 so had to give it a four. Alot of people seem to be hating on this album but I listend to it for the second time last night and maybe it was because I was in a bad mood but was not a bad album at all. Busta has some good subjects on the album and one of them is my favorite about pursing your dreams.
Top Songs 1.Don't believe em 2.Respect my Conglomerate 3.Hustler's Anthem 09 4.Give Em what they asking for 5.Arab Money |

For the record this project was chnaged and pushed back about 10 times for the last 3/4 years..
People are too hard on Busta.... Nobody can spit or murk a verse like Bus a bus. He's been in the game for the longest time and still pretty relevant. Although its not his best, I was entertained by this LP. TOP 5 1. If you dont know, now you know (bonus) 2. Decision 3. Imma go and get 4. Sugar 5. Kill Dem The "World GO Round" track was ruined when he added ESTELLE to it. The original had this next girl who sound like britney spears, and it was fya. It woulda coulda and shoulda been the 1st single. To me, "the coming" and "the big bang" are his BEST classics ! |

Busta Rhymes is among my favourite rappers; his energy, flow, creativity, lyrics, live show, ear for hot beats....no other rapper holds it down like Busta! He has hit records for days, seriously, check his catalogue, dude has classics!!
However, ever since he stopped dropping albums every year he seemingly lost his magic touch. The buzz he and Dr. Dre created with The Big Bang hit fever pitch by the time it dropped, however what could have been a classic game changing album became levelled out to just being a good album. (mainly because of the mediocre second half of that CD). When Dont Touch Me & We Made It dropped I was excited to hear what I thought would be the return of the Busta we know and love. But after the label dramas and the switch to Arab Money as the lead single, it seemed that Busta's inspiration was lost in the process. For some reason, this record is actually quite a bore, it seemed really slopped together. Busta is a legend; this album is not of legend standards, plain & simple. Busta still has the talent, just check his verse on DJ Khaled's 'All I Do Is Win' remix. Why he doesnt use his exceptional talent to make classic records anymore baffles me. Lets hope his new album takes it back to the old Busta (as he has indicated it would) |
