DJBooth Album Review
I know it’s hard for rappers to wait when they see a fleet of Bentleys glistening on the horizon, but trust me, in hip-hop patience is a virtue. When a rapper is catapulted to fame overnight, without taking the time to truly lay down a foundation, nine-times-out-of-ten they watch that success evaporate faster than Tiger Wood’s marriage (paging Dr. Mims/J-Kwon/etc.). So while I’m sure that B.o.B. truly hoped his debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray would have dropped in 2008, as he told DJ Z way back when, in retrospect the delay was a blessing in disguise. So now, when the fame and adulation Bobby Ray deserves finally arrives at his doorstep, and to some extent it already has, the man will be in the perfect position to make sure his name stays in the spotlight for years.
After more than two years, at least one dope mixtape and a steadily building downpour of hype now threatening to overflow the levees, B.o.B. is finally ready to flood the game with the sonic torrent that is Adventures. After this many years on the grind Adventures is a “debut” album mostly in name – like when Chris Weinke debuted as Florida State’s QB as a 26 year-old “sophomore” – but no matter what your definition, Adventures is well worth the wait. Don’t worry, I’m going to go deep inside this album, but let me start off by breaking things down for all the slow folks out there: Adventures…of..Bobby Ray…is the…motherfu**king…s**t.
Ready to have your mind blown? Too bad, cause it’s coming anyway. B.o.B.’s breakthrough #1 hit, Nothin on You, was originally written with Lupe Fiasco in mind. Lupe passed, B.o.B. pounced and the rest is history. (I’ll let you ruminate on the divine workings of fate for a moment.) Nothin’ On You has been the smash it is because of B.o.B.’s Avatar-like ability to live simultaneously in different musical worlds. Nothin’ has the hook of a pop-song, the background of a rock song and the verses of a rap song. What’s more, B.o.B. manages to win over the ladies (a must) without coming off as a d-bag and losing the respect of guys; no easy feat. That ability to erase borders is on full display throughout the album, most notably on the gripping Airplanes, a track that finds B.o.B. topping off emotionally honest rhymes with a chorus from Hayley Williams of rock group phenomenon Paramore. Perhaps more surprising is the quickly stuttering Magic, which brings on Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo for a track that would feel at home on both Power 106 and KROQ (for all you non-L.A. folks those are huge hip-hop and rock radio stations, respectively). Most importantly, these cross-genre blends never feel forced. Unlike The Rebrirth, which Weezy essentially spent screaming “hey, look at me, I’m a rapper doing hard rock,” on Adventures B.o.B. pushes boundaries on tracks like Don’t Let Me Fall easily, naturally, effortlessly. Take notes, this is how it’s done.
For all his sonic wanderings, B.o.B.’s homeland is and always will be hip-hop nation, and he makes sure to spend plenty of time at home on Adventures, starting with Bet I Bust. The album’s most overtly rap-centric cut, Bet I Bust is proof that if provoked Bobby can kills mics (and blunts) with the best of them, including track mates T.I. and Playboy Tre. While his flows are often compared to Andre 3K, it’d be more accurate to compare his metaphor laced lyrics and high-caliber rhyme style to Big Boi. Still, whatever his influences, in the end Bobby always remains his own man, much like the aforementioned Fiasco, who joins him on the smoky and defiantly bouncing Past These Shades, and the destructively unique Eminem, who delivers an uppercut to B.o.B.’s jab on the devastating Airplanes (Pt. 2). For the record, that’s T.I., Lupe and Eminem that B.o.B. holds his own next too. Respect.
Let’s finish this review by focusing on who B.o.B. is, not who he sounds like. Just take Fame, a track that’s my favorite on the album not only because Jim Jonsin crafts a beat that’s sticks in your head like a shotgun shell to the dome but because Bobby dodges and weaves in and out of the big band production like Sugar Ray Robinson in his prime. The same could be said of the dancehall-tinged The Kids and the starkly done Ghost in the Machine, both tracks that could only have come from the mind of one man, and that man’s name is B.o.B…or Bobby Ray. Regardless, it’s the music that matters, not the moniker, and if The Adventures of Bobby Ray is any indication, the music is some of the most exciting work we’ve heard in a minute. The wait is finally over. B.o.B. has arrived.

And welcome back, Nathan! This album is the best I've heard from any artist of any genre in months. Damn, I cannot even remember the last time I enjoyed an entire project as much as I like this album.
@3Roshambo3 - Nathan likes to give artists room to grow. If he gave the project a 4.5/5.0 it would mean Bobby would be incapable of cranking out anything better... and despite this being f**king great, he is capable of even better (as all artists are). |

I've been given a lot of chances to check out all of the tracks on this album, but I've passed on most, having listened to only Nothin' On You, Airplanes Pt. 1/2, Magic and Past My Shades.
Support a dope artist; buy 'Adventures'! You can't expect more from artists if you're part of the reason they're pushed into corners by label heads. |

I'm very divided on this album. On one hand, every track is listenable and many of them are top-notch but, here's my beef: B.o.B. is not lyrical by any means and this album is anything but a rap album (most of the album consists of singing and, when B.o.B. actually does rap, his rhyme scheme is pretty elementary).
I've seen a lot of sites that have been raving about this album - claiming it's the best rap debut since "The College Dropout". Really? This is better than "Food & Liquor"? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong; the albums highs are high but far too project seems to be projected towards teenage girls. Think I'm wrong? Take a listen to "Magic" - a track I was anxiously anticipating (as a Weezer fan). "Magic" could easily be confused with something they would play during the trailer for a DreamWorks movie (and I'm not talking about the excellent "How To Train Your Dragon". I'm talking about "Shark Tale") Fortunately for B.o.B., the positives on his debut outweigh the negatives. "Airplanes (Pt. I & II)", "Don't Let Me Fall", "Ghost In the Machine", "Bet I Bust", "Nothin' on You" and "The Kids" are all excellent tracks worthy of inclusion on a Classic album and the album certainly deserves any amount of praise that comes to it as long as that praise doesn't include the word "Classic". I have faith that B.o.B. can drop a classic album. Unfortunately, I can't say this is it. I'll throw it 4 stars. |

On a sidenote, I gotta disagree with your assessment of "Nothin' On You", Nathan. Sorry.
I actually believe the majority of "Nothin' On You"'s success is owed to Bruno Mars' ridiculously smooth chorus. Girls go crazy for that shiz. ("Billionaire" by Travie McCoy is taking off right now for the same reason) Just my opinion. |

Hey hey welcome back Nathan. Great way to return. Anyways, I'm going to start out by saying that I have never really liked B.o.B. Yeah I've gotten my fair share of hate for never thinking that he was anything special. Was it his annoying voice, or the fact that he just wouldn't drop an album? I don't know, but even though I still think he is annoying, I really like this album. Mostly because of the production and the guest features. Bobby does hold his own as Nathan said, especially with T.I.
@3Roshambo3: I'm all for opinions here, but this definitely isn't a classic or a near-classic for that matter, and even though Nathans rating system is flawed seeing as you can't rate a debut album a classic when you have nothing to compare it to which is what Nathan does when rating, this isn't more than a four star. |

@Blknight84: I disagree with you. I would not classify B.o.B. as a Pop-Papper. Flo Rida is a pop rapper, B.o.B. is more of an alternative rapper.
@Nathan: Nice Avatar analogy. So from what I've heard on the booth and what I've seen in person, B.o.B. is definitely someone Hip Hop heads needs to be tracking. Truly in a league of his own, with his feet firmly in Hip-Hop, I am high anticipating his album tomorrow. |

COP THE ALBUM!
SUPPORT THE ARTIST! Most songs I really do enjoy. But there are definatly some forgetable. Most of the album has good production courtesy of Bobby Ray himself (and a few others) but it doesn't seem like a rap album as much as it is pop. All in all, I am a fan of good music. And this my friends, is great music. 4.5 bumped up to 5. great album. |

Finally an album I've been able to listen through without a single song I disliked. With the features of vocal singers in rock groups were a surprise to see on a rap album. I really enjoyed Magic because I'm a big fan of Weezer. Bobby Ray has such a mixed vocal sound he sounds like 5 different rappers combined. Great freaking album.

Damn Z, you and I do spend a lot of time together. You nailed it. I know everyone always gets hung up on the number rating, so let me quickly say that yes, this was one hell of an album, but I've only given 4.5 stars to a very, very small number of albums (Lupe's The Cool, Alicia Key's As I Am, etc.) and this just isn't at that level - nor should it be. It's one of the strongest debut's we've heard in a while, and I feel like B.o.B. definitely had a classic or at least near-classic album in him, but for now he's still growing and figuring out his place as an artist. |

I was starting to get worried for a second; usually when an artist has so much hype built up around him, it seems like no matter how good the material he puts out is, it won't live up to everyone's expectations. I'm glad Bobby hasn't let anyone down yet (and I doubt he will).
Nicki Minaj is another story, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there. This is an album that should have most people satisfied for a good while. Maybe B.o.B should get his Eminem on and take a five-year hiatus. |

This is the BEST ALBUM this year. It is jam packed of different styles of songs. It has a lot of varied and brilliant production in it. With bobby himsef producing some of the riffs on his tracks.
Every track on this album is listanable. Most tracks are a pleasure to listen to such as Airplanes and don't let me fall, nothin on you, bet I bust and so many more. If B.o.B keeps this up he will soon drop classics after classics after classics. |

EPIC album!!!
My only problem with this is that he shoulda have gotten rid of the original Airplanes, thrown the one with Eminem on the original beat, and put Not Lost on the album. Listening to that song basically twice just kinda wears out the hook. Other than that this is a classic album |

I just finished listening to his album and I was a bit suprised. I was expecting a full hip hop album but instead it was a mixture of hip hop rock and perhaps pop. Sometimes a song would have a chorus that he would sing than rap or he would rap the whole song or sing the whole song. This album is definitely unique and some interesting features asides the well-known hip hop stars. What I also found interesting is when I went to iTunes and found out the he had 2 tracks that was on the album that he did not announce and was included which was also a great addition to the album. This album is between a banger or classic i'm not really sure but it is a good album and recommend listening to it.

This album was so average in every way. Sorry, but the staff of this site has had a huge hard on for B.o.B. for years now (remember when djbooth fans voted for Drake as the breakout artist? ...and djbooth staff proclaimed their love for bobby ray? lol.) so I was not at all surprised to see this album rated so highly.
Heck, I'm surprised it wasn't given 9 stars out of 5 based on the review. The album has some good songs but for all the hype djbooth has built around b.o.b. being able to "do it all" he really sticks to one style and doesn't really excel at it. Poor man's Kid Cudi. Enjoy. |

@ LeBron23
This CD was amazing. Very diverse. He hits ya with hip-hop, the rock/rap mix Lil Wayne prays he had, some nice RnB type songs, and rap with a pop mix. Kid Cudi is a good artist, but Kid Cudi sticks to the same style far more than B.o.B and B.o.B's songs have more meaning in them. You say that DJ Booth has a hard on for him, but look at everyone else's reviews...they are all pretty positive and with good reason. This is the first CD in a long time where I could start it and listen to it all the way through without skipping songs. |

I dont care what anybody says, this is the album of the year! Nobody can come close to what B.o.B did with the variety of songs on this album. He can make hard-hitting street songs or make pop songs for the radio like "Nothing On You". I've been a B.o.B fan ever since he came in to this biz and this is the first step for him to get on the map for all different genres. There isnt one song on here that is bad and that is impressive. Every song is enjoyable and a good listen. B.o.B is taking us to another world with this one!

Brilliant album. Gotta say I was expecting more of a Hip Hop album when I bought it so was initially a little disappointed with the rarity of the sick lyrical performances we know he's capable of. But once you give it a few spins those almost-rock songs like Don't Let Me Fall and Magic just grow on you. Fantastic album apart from 'Lovelier than you', which I cant believe made the cut.

B.o.B's talent has been stretched over the years of my experience... his articulacy to flow so 'correct' dazzled me in every way. The difference between a good rapper and a legendary rapper is that they can perform an unique delivery which is diversely beautiful. I think some one raised a point regarding the migration towards being unsigned to signed... all 'raised one eyebrow' in suspicion that may be in doing this transfer, his main 'core' would never be the same (if you know what I mean). However his rapping career had almost done the complete opposite by compelling the BEST of B.o.B in the matter of ONE album. I rate this without a doubt above any album which is classified the same rating; therefore this is 5- classic.

wow. i gotta say im impressed. i knew Bobby Ray had a lot of talent, but i havent been the biggest fan. nor did i think he would craft a debut album so well. initially, i thought the album title was corny, but after listening to it i thought it fit like the infamous Bowlen-Shanahan-Elway trio.
one major thing i noticed here is that the catchiness of the entire cd is off the charts. he selected great features for his chorus' and they all tore it up. catchiness def score bonus pts w/me cuz im bout feel good music. i really enjoyed how much of the record was devoted to singing. i think B.o.B. is a great singer and really turned his album into a musical more than anything. he was so creative and light-hearted bout the feel of the record and it payed off big time. also, he didnt try to overbear u w/his cockiness. he really sounded confident in himself as well as the other contributors that he didnt try to do too much wen he had to go up against big time features like Em,T.I.,Lupe and Bruno Mars. he jus let everything come to him and the result was great. overall, this was an impressive debut that really showed Bobby's talent and versatility. he did have a few blunders that jus bored me or got old quickly, but it was well crafted and a memorable debut. fav tracks: 1.Fame (i agree Nathan S.) 2.Ghost In The Machine 3.Nothin' On You 4.Dont Let Me Fall 5.The Kids 6.Bet I Bust |

I'm going to give this album a solid 4 although I dont think I got into it as much as everyone else seems to have...The game needs B.o.B, he is so interesting to listen to because he doesn't adhere to the standards of todays rap game. I love how he branches out into so many different genre's. In my opinion, Airplanes is one of the best songs to come out this year, the Eminem version just takes the 'bigness' of this record to another level. If ever released as a single, Don't Let Me Fall should be another hit.
I also liked B.o.B's more alternate, less traditional hip hop records like Ghost In The Machine, The Kids & 5th Dimension. Although I didnt really enjoy the song as a whole, its good to hear Lupe on Past My Shades, WHERE IS LASERS?!?! The only other song I couldnt get into was Magic. It sounds really out of place, sounds like a song that Kesha passed on (not a good thing) Overall, its an outstanding effort for a debut album and after a few years of buzz, it feels great that B.o.B has finally hit the big time. Hip Hop needs him... My picks; 1. Airplanes Part 1 & 2 2. Don't Let Me Fall 3. Ghost In The Machine 4. Bet I Bust 5. Nothing On You |

I have been a fan of B.O.B for a minute now, with all of his mixtapes. I've had quite some time to listen to each track now, and multiple times coming to the conclusion that this CD is a classic surprised me! B.O.B is such a talented musician yes, not just a rapper, a musician. The collaborations on the album are perfect, Bruno Mars the collab with Hayley Williams is also incredible, and you can't go wrong with Eminem. Then the one with TIP was cool, but I
Every track is unique and fun to listen to. I wish it were a bit longer of an album, but I can't complain because not one track is really worth skipping over. Highlights include: Don't Let Me Fall Nothin' On You Airplanes 1 and 2 Fame 5Th Dimension Lovelier Than You but to be real, every track can be considered a highlight. |
