I’ve read a lot of reviews of Alicia Keys’ new album The Element of Freedom, and I noticed that all the negative reviews had something in common:  the writers apparently have an barren wasteland where their soul should be. DJBooth Album Review

I’ve read a lot of reviews of Alicia Keys’ new album The Element of Freedom, and I noticed that all the negative reviews had something in common:  the writers apparently have an barren wasteland where their soul should be. Now I’m not going to name names (a.k.a. the legal department has advised me not to), but these writers have gone so deep into their critical analysis that they seem to have forgotten why we listen to music in the first place - to feel something. Sad, angry, joyous, lustful, great music allows us to simultaneously escape and draw deeper into ourselves, to tap into emotions that were previously walled off. Over the last decade no artist has made us feel more, and more strongly, than Alicia Keys, and if you can listen to all of The Element of Freedom and not be moved, not even a little, than you’re either a robot sent from the future to destroy mankind, or a jaded music writer. It’s one or the other.

That doesn’t mean that Element of Freedom is perfect. The album, Key’s fourth, was written during a time of intense personal struggle for the New York City songstress, and her pain is evident throughout Freedom. Almost completely lacking in some of the more upbeat cuts that buoyed her last album As I Am (Teenage Love Affair for example), Freedom is often little more than Keys, a piano, some minimal backing and her extraordinary voice, making the album the least immediately accessible of her career. This is an album that does not immediately grab you. Instead, it requires some patience, demands the listener put in some work too, but those who are willing to follow Keys’ will find their effort well rewarded.

Regular readers know that I have a certain, let’s say “affinity” for Ms. Keys, so if public displays of affection make you uncomfortable I suggest you skip to the next paragraph. Unthinkable (I’m Ready)…is…one of the most…..beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Consisting of little more than a handful of piano chords and minimal percussion, Unthinkable is an extraordinary example of Keys’ power to make us truly feel. Turn the lights low, pull someone you love close, turn on this song and see what happens. No album that contains Unthinkable could possibly be mediocre, so [censored] over at [censored] Magazine can get the f*k out of here with that “lack of inspiration” bulls**t. Damn, there go those lawyers again.

My personal beefs aside, I can admit that the lack of a true smash hit, the kind of song an entire country can’t get enough of (basically a track like Empire State of Mind) does keep Element of Freedom from being quite as good as As I Am. Keys’ latest single Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart, an ‘80s tinged ballad complete with synths and drum machine percussion, is enjoyable but ultimately fails to truly connect, and while I’m sure she intended Doesn’t Mean Anything to be another Like You’ll Never See Me Again, it just doesn’t have the same appeal. The only true stumble on Element is her ill-conceived duet with Beyonce Put It In a Love Song, which could have been amazing if they hadn’t inexplicably try to revive Destiny’s Child’s sound. Several songs on the album may not be instant classics, but this is the only one that shows a real lack of judgment.

With that said, there’s plenty on Element of Freedom to melt even the iciest of hearts. Just take This Bed, an obviously Prince influenced track that’s certainly not what we’re used to hearing from Keys’, who here abandons her usually wide-ranging vocals to go almost completely falsetto. The only way to avoid liking This Bed is if you’re actively trying not to. The same can be said of Distance and Time, a slowly unwinding track that Alicia absolutely owns, and Like The Sea, a track which at first blush may come off as a little corny, but by the time the chorus hits you’re absolutely enthralled with (there’s that patience I was speaking of).  Throw in the experimental Love Is Blind and, of course, Empire State of Mind II (Broken Down) and you’ve got an album that hits far more than it misses.

So, at the end of the day, how good is Element of Freedom? It’s certainly not her best, but complaining about it is like complaining about Michelangelo’s Statue of David because it’s not the Sistine Chapel (thanks college art history class). If you want an artist who makes you feel, you want Alicia Keys, and you want The Element of Freedom. Sometimes it really is that simple.

I agree 100%. This album was fantastic, and one of the best of the year (This year has been horrible for music in general). Still, when comparing it to "As I Am" it isn't as good as Nathan said. This album is a little scrambled, especially with "Put It In A Love Song". That song is so out of place it isn't even funny. It's good, but it just doesn't belong. Otherwise still an amazing album, from the soulful into making me wonder if it was actually Alicia singing to the epic closer of a broken down Jay-Z track. My personal favorite is "Wait Till you see me smile".

This is the reason why Alicia is still relevant and will become an icon...each time she comes out she's not affraid to try something different she's always changing her style with each album and never scared to try something different. She distinguishes her sound with each and every album and this is why people like me love her

Like you stated, this album takes patience to grasp, so until I listen to it in its entirety, I won't rate. So far I like "Unthinkable (I'm Ready)".

I'm halfway through listening to this, and I have to say, you were right, this album WILL evoke emotions in you. While listening to this I literally got a chill over my spine, especially towards the end of "Thats How Strong My Love Is". When skipping through the album it may come off as a bit boring and lacking energy, but after listening to every individual track you will see how much depth their is in the music. Its hard to explain, but this is touching music, and this is coming from a straight guy, lol. I rarely do this, but this album is worth 5 stars, and I haven't even gotten past track 7 yet...

To me this is a better album than “As I Am”. As you say it has heart and it feels from the heart and not an album made for the radio or producers but an album Alicia wanted to make. Not that “As I Am” was made for radio but it definitely felt more like it was geared that way and took far less chances.

My favorite songs are “That’s How Strong My Love Is”, “Un-Thinkable”, “Love Is Blind”.. actually all of them lol. I do agree “Put It In A Long Song” has a different feel than the rest of the album but it doesn’t stick out to me like it did for most of you and I think it is a great song to boot, I found it to be a very enjoyable interlude in a perfect album..

Anyhow, great review.. Thank you! Can’t wait for her next one already

Mostly agree with this review-it's definitely a slow burner and before I heard it I was disappointed with the two lead singles. However, it feels really cohesive as a whole, possibly better than Diary of...in that respect anyway. I disagree with the 'Put It In a Love Song' comments though- I can see that becoming a big radio hit and it's exciting to hear those two artists together arguably at the top of their game. Definitely one of my albums of the year.

Solid album top to bottom. Try sleeping with a broken heart is easily the best track on the album. A bit disapointed with the duet with Be yonce. Notheless very good album from a talented performer. Can't wait to see her show in Montreal in february.

This album was very theme like. She was going in a hippie type of vibe for me. Trying sleeping with a broken heart, Unthinkable(iM READY), and Lover man(bonus track) are the best songs on the album. Put in a love song is wack and very forced. She could did better. Hopefully Swizz bring it out of her or something shit.

This is pretty good. Not as good as the first two albums but I do like most of the tracks. I think she has too many ballads on here this time. The other albums has more of a mix of up-tempo and then added in the ballads. When an album is too slow, I get bored with it. I love the songs "Love is my Disease" and "Love is like the Sea". This album is indeed good but not the best I've heard from her. I have to skip tracks to get to the songs I really like.

Without a doubt - Unthinkable (IN MY OPINION) is one of the sexiest tracks she's ever done... AGAIN... I say --> MY OPINION...
