DJBooth Album Review
There are a million stories in hip-hop - Akon’s is one of the most interesting. The son of Senegalese musicians, Akon grew up loving music, but it wasn’t until he was jailed for auto theft that he decided to make music his livelihood. Upon his release, he quickly became one of the most sought after producers and singers in the game, charting 25 hit singles and even receiving a Grammy nomination for Smack That (marking the first time the Grammy committee has openly endorsed booty smacking). But his rise to the top hasn’t been without incident. In the last year alone he’s been caught throwing a skinny white kid off a stage, dry-humping a teenage girl, and it was revealed that he greatly exaggerated his criminal past, none of which have put a dent in his popularity. Take a minute to let it soak in; because that my friends, is one hell of a story.
The next chapter in Akon’s rags to riches tale continues with the release of his third solo album, Freedom. Freedom relies heavily on romantic lyrics and European club sounds, a serious stylistic shift for a man whose breakthrough single was Locked Up. Akon could have easily just made another Konvicted, and he deserves credit for exploring new territory, but the simple truth is that Freedom just isn’t as interesting as his past work. I wish it wasn’t true, but the story of a criminal is always more interesting than the story of a free man, especially when that free man is in love.
If you want to know what Freedom sounds like there’s no better place to start than the album’s lead single, Right Now. The track finds Akon abandoning his ass-smacking ways for lyrics like, “hold you, tease you, squeeze you, tell you what’s been on my mind,” while some synths sweetly play over lightly bouncing production. I can’t lie, I’ve hummed a little “na na na” in the shower, and that’s exactly the type of song Right Now is; an enjoyable but ultimately disposable pop jam. It’s the same story on Birthmark, a track built around an acoustic guitar and plaintive lyrics from Mr. Konvict. If Akon wanted to get regular rotation on VH1 he’s in luck, Birthmark is exactly the kind of earnest song they eat up. It’s not Soul Survivor, but it works; whether or not you like how it’s working, that’s a different story.
Freedom isn’t all sweet ballads all the time. Akon’s become the star he is largely because of his slick production and catchy hooks, both of which have become increasingly important in mainstream hip-hop. But even at its most hip-hop, Freedom is still more melodic than banging. Just take I’m So Paid. Based on the title you’d expect some sort of Khaled-esque booming beat, but instead we get a sparse track decorated with only touches of synths and surprisingly deep verses from Jeezy and Weezy. On the same tip is Troublemaker, a club-ready joint that touches on Akon’s harder past, but wraps all the hustler’s talk in a cocoon of echoing snares and a cooing chorus. Perhaps the most predictable song on the album is Holla Holla, an auto-tuned duel between Akon and T-Pain, who’s primary focus in getting as many girls as possible to make out in their Lamborghini’s. Now that’s the Akon we know and love.
Ultimately, Holla Holla’s “you a sex machine” moments are few and far between on Freedom. Akon instead chooses to showcase his tender side with songs like Beautiful, a track that brings on the Konvict label’s Colby O’Donis and Kardinal for some adolescent sweet talk, or the surprising smoothness of Keep You Longer, a plea for his lady to stay just a little longer. It’s pop/dance songs like these that make up the bulk of Freedom, proving that Akon belongs to that rare group of artists whose fans support their music, not just their songs, allowing them to change their music significantly while remaining remarkably successful (see Kanye’s new album for the best example). Freedom is Akon at his least convicted, and in the end maybe he’s declaring his freedom not so much from the legal system, but the expectations of a music industry that had tried to lock him into a cell of criminally minded music.

Awesome review, Nate. It sure seems like countless artists are switching up their styles these days. Just by comparing "Freedom's" album cover to Akon's previous two projects, you can already tell his musical direction is going to be different.
A lot of the tracks are pleasant attempts at universal pop jams with international appeal, but many of them are missing that one extra distinguishing factor. At some points it sounded like Akon was a rendition Wyclef (he did appear on a "Fu-Gee-La" remix off "The Score" back in the day). |

I wonder if this album was more for his euro/africa/asia fans, or if he's tryin to expose americans to more euro stuff. what really lacks in this album is the emotions u got in Konvicted. I dunno if being in love isn't as interesting as a criminal, but songs like Sunny Day leave me scratchin my head. Not that Akon was ever hard, but now he's just SOFT! The first 5 songs are the best, then it becomes pretty good, to good, to meh. :-(

Great album, not a bad song on the tracklist. It's good to hear Akon taking a different approach to this album. The best track has to be Birthmark, followed by Beautiful. Easy 5 from me.

Now i've said it before, and ill surely say it again, I could almost guarantee that i'm the BIGGEST Akon fan on here, I have no idea why, He's just so amazingly touching, he brings out the side of me that no one else can with his music, I can't even put any of these songs in order because there all BANGERRS!!, Akon is one of the biggest producers, and biggest artist of all time in my book, CLASSIC album to me.

Besides Paper Trail, this is my favorite album of the year. Every song on the album i can listen to over & over again (which is incredible rare for me to be able to do). Akon proves that he his a incredible talent on this album and is easily one of the best & most respected act and producer in the urban music scene today.
Top Tracks 1. Holla Holla 2. Be With You 3. Keep You Much Longer 4. Im So Paid 5. Right Now Holla Holla is easily my favorite track on the album, but the rest of the songs are so hard to choose between, their are so many great tracks on this album |

after having the title track in my head for nearly a day, I realized that I didn't give the whole album a good listen. Freedom and Over the Edge are friggin amazing. Akon consistently brings the passion, the partying, on this album. I think it's more consistently good than Konvicted. Great album.

This album is really good although i don't really like some of the beats- they're too fast. He's got a hella sexy voice that makes up for that though. And my favorite song is still Right Now because it applies to me in ALL of the words he's saying (I MISS MY EX SOOOOO MUCH:( !!!(tear))

I liked it, but not as good as Konvicted. There were only a few really good songs on this album and "Holla Holla" wasn't one of them. "Beautiful was the best track off this album, followed by "I'm so paid" in my opinion. But just an average album. I actually like to say that T-Pains album is better, but I'm not an expert in this category so I'm going to leave that up to others to figure out.

The KONVICTS are here !!!!
First thing first: What a YEAR this has been for music industry & its still not over... Jamie,Common & Plies are ready to hit us. Now to main course .... the first five tracks sounds like they have been stripped off from any Pop/Urban-dance/Trance artists of yours which in anyway doesn't imply that they are bad but in the same way they aren't anything special..... dance-floor burners anyone?? (the moment Troublemaker hit my ears my reaction was "Did they put Dangerous on here too ?") 'Im so paid' is a Hit.Period. Wayne rides the beat perfectly. Next comes in 'Holla Holla' the chemistry bw Akon & TP can be felt all along the way.im diggin this cos Teddy is on it LOL.... 'Against the Grain' & 'Over The Edge' are both decent slow jams .... on 'Be With U' & 'We Dont Care' akon try to recreate the magic of 'Dont Matter' but didn't managed to pull it off the way he did on 'Dont Matter' ... the next three tracks (Sunny Day,Birthmark & Freedom) are which im feelin the most... Wyclef on a Konvict beat is a welcome voice. str8 goin to my MP3.... the Production on album is Top-Notch gently put trunk-rattling !!! not sure if it's better than his previous two efforts because both albums were amazing but it will definitely add some fans to Akon's fanbase.... My Top Picks: 1. Sunny Day } 2. Freedom } I am...Aliane Thiam 3. Birthmark } 1. Hollo Holla } 2. Im So Paid } I am...Akon 3. Right Now } |

It's true, we all knew Akon was going to spin things a different way on Freedom. I mean, it's not as good as Konvicted, but calling this bad is way off, considering Konvicted, at least to me, is a CLASSIC. Akon's production has also come a long way, tracks like his remixed "Clap Again" (check the full version; WOW) and "Over The Edge" are proof of this. And really, there is not a single track that isn't a bit catchy. I especially like the aforementioned "Freedom" track and "Birthmark". I only wish Akon wasn't pushing so many singles at the same time, and waited at least just one more month before dropping. "Birthmark" has MAJOR hit potentional. I'd say the best tracks are, in this order; "Birthmark", "Holla Holla", "Against The Grain", "Troublemaker", "Over The Edge" and "I'm So Paid. Overall, great effort. All Konvict releases have been. I think Kardi had the best though, everyone else..? I'm still waiting on ROCK CITY!

If you love or hate Akon, I don't think listening to this album will change your mind. Yeah, he has changed his style, but he is still the same Akon with a small amount of vocal talent, nasal groan and the catchiest hooks repeated as many times as needed to get them stuck in your head forever. With that said, Akon is tremedously popular and will continue to be one of the biggest in the industry. Personally, I am an Akon fan, I love his music and enjoyed this album ALOT! I enjoyed almost every song... 2 tracks that didn't enjoy were Holla Holla and Sunny Day is also poor, Wyclef is WEAK. My favourites are Beautiful, Right Now, We Don't Care, I'm so paid, Birthmark, and Over The Edge. Probaly, my 3rd Favorite album of the year, but the ONE I'm likely to listen to the most!

i still got to listen to it more, but it is a different album from akon. When i heard rite na na na, i was amazed wit the production, lyrically not as impressed but it was still catchy. i had we don't care months before the release, from that song i pictured what the album will sound like. A more club, and synth oriented production. Some of the songs are kinda boring..but i can't argue that his production is amazing..it was not a 5 star..cuz it was not like i thought ever song was great..so i give it a four....

I've changed my mind. This is just as much as a classic as Konvicted, just two different angles from Akon.
This album is truly hypnotic, and the oft-mentioned passion is easy to hear. From the final verse on Be With You, the sad, yet optimistic lyrics on Keep You Much Longer ("as long as I got eyes, I'll have a sight for you"), the harmonic Against The Grain, powerful Birthmark and Freedom, or the above excellent production on EVERY track, Akon's soul lives in this album. That's music. Redone top six; Birthmark, Freedom, Against The Grain, Holla Holla, Troublemaker and Over The Edge. I also love Be With You and Keep You Much Longer. |

Akon is one of my favourite R&B artists. He just knows what people want in a hook. Every song he is featured in he makes hot. However, dont forget about his solo career he definately dominates in solo as well. His last CD Konvicted was amazing. It is a hard CD to follow up, but he did it, and I like this CD 3X better.
Every track is a club banger, he seems to blend Dance and R&B perfectly on Right Now(Na Na Na), and Beautiful, and it carries on throughout the CD. Definately Classic |

And ofcourse he went sort of oldschool with 'Holla Holla' and 'I'm So Paid' My boy pulled this one outta no where. Lets Bounce.
